Pakistan's opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was killed in a horrific suicide bomb attack today.

She was shot in the head and neck as she got into her car after addressing a rally. The gunman then blew himself up, killing at least another 20 people.

Ms Bhutto, twice the country's prime minister, was rushed to hospital in Rawalpindi.

News of her death was released by party member Wasif Ali Khan, who said simply: "At 6:16pm she expired.

A senior military official confirmed that Ms Bhutto, 54, had died, along with at least another 20 people.

Her supporters at the hospital began chanting "Dog, Musharraf, dog," referring to Pakistan's president, Pervez Musharraf.

Some of them smashed the glass door at the main entrance of the emergency unit, others burst into tears.

Ms Bhutto had just addressed thousands of people in a public park as part of her campaign for the country's parliamentary elections due on January 8.

A spokesman for her party said her vehicle was yards away from the blast. He said: "She had just crossed the gate when we heard a deafening sound. We could feel its impact."

Party supporter Chaudry Nazir said two shots rang out when Ms Bhutto's vehicle pulled into the street and then there was a big blast.

Police cordoned off the street and rescue workers rushed to put victims in ambulances as people wailed nearby.

Amid horrific scenes, body parts, pieces of clothing and party banners were scattered on the street. The clothing of some victims was shredded and people put party flags over their bodies. Police caps and shoes littered the area.

Earlier, hundreds of riot police had manned security checkpoints to guard the venue. It was Ms Bhutto's first public meeting in Rawalpindi since she came back to the country.

Rahman Malik, Ms Bhutto's security adviser, said: "She was the prime target. We had information that Benazir Bhutto's life was in danger."

The killing sparked fears the nuclear-armed country could be plunged into civil war. Riaz Malik, of the Pakistan Movement for Justice party warned: "The impact will be Pakistan is in more turmoil. It will be the start of civil war in Pakistan."

The above story confirms all - Pakistan is heading towards an all-out war!

Ms Bhutto should have taken heed of the warning a couple of months ago when explosions took place just yards from her vehicle - a very volatile situation for which Musharaf will be held responsible!

Yet a further tragedy in the troubled history of Pakistan.

Hi,
I agree with The Missing City
when Ms Bhuto returned to pakistan >>result
innocent people were killed as a result & that was a warning ignored...in politics this happens nothng new
sorry if it sounds harsh but she is responsible for the caos and many dead in Pakistan when she returned.
Who will count for the death of those people???
I pay my respects to THEM!!!!

Yet another display from the 'Religeon of Peace'. Amazing that 'tulo' can see the bombers killing other innocents and blame the entire thing on the innocent target. This country is armed with a nuclear arsenal remember, not your imagined Iraq WMD's here.

This is a huge shame for Pakistan, no doubt there is a huge volume of good there such as talent, scope and decent people doing very well and reaching new heights but of course the Musharaff era and his dictatorship army ruling has caused this scare for democracy and allowing so many of these extremists to do what in their eyes seems correct but for the very very vast majority of the Pakistani people is a let down and a hold back for them to gain some recognition and success in their efforts.

I agree with the comments she was given a scare and warnings but i also agree if she was to hide then those that have done this to her would have won. A very very brave women and i my respects go out to all the many innocent people who have died as well as the lady herself.

Its a very sad day for Pakistan when simple human rights cannot be expressed without the threat of death!

What hasnt been reported was a lot of pressure was put on Musharaff by America and the UK privately to relinquish power to Bhutto. Bhutto was seen has a representitive of the West moreso than protector of Pakistan. Bhutto was an incredibly divisive figure in Pakistan, and the British and americans never took that into account.

Bhutto was a very selfish woman AND probably Pakistans biggest ever thief.
She was warned time and time agan NOT to return as she would be killed by the maniacs.
Two explosions and far too many dead, all for yet another powerful crook.
Would she have been any better for Pakistan? I doubt it, it was her fraudulent, corrupt and thieving government that led to the military rule!!!!!!!!!!
That said, NOT a good day for Pakistan OR the rest of us ............. you`ll see all the cowards leaving in droves to come here now........ PULL UP THE DRAWBRIDGE FFS!!!!!!!!!

Thistlemad, where is your proof Bhutto was a thief. Was she ever found guilty of theft?
The woman isn't even cold yet, your a disgrace!
I would rather a Pakistani neighbour than an idiot like you.

Islam at it's finest again eh.
Not content with killing Bhutto but had to murder 20 innocent people too...
Get set for civil war in Pakistan and watch as they plead with their hated enemy,INDIA,for sanctuary for fleeing citizens...
Quick question.....why does these attrocities nearly always happen when the "religion of peace" are involved.

Very complex politics aside, I think Ms Bhutto's personal bravery in the face of a very real, sustained and lethal threat should be recognised and congratulated.

Read up on the subject. Her father stole what is believed to hae run into BILLIONS, she and her ministers were caught taking bribes in the millions. Thats why she fled when Musharrif grabbed power.
So in YOUR opinion I`m a disgrace, guess what ........ I don`t give a monkeys!!!!
She only went back when she was granted immunity from prosecution, hardly the actions of an innocent woman. If she had HALF the "pride and integrity" that her followers claimed she would NEVER have bargained for immunity.
Besides, she was a politician ....... never the most warm bloodied of creatures!!!!
I have more sympathy for the families of those who were near her when she was killed and took their loved ones with her.
As has been said before, REALLY the actions of a peaceful religion, eh?

Some people really are idiots. Blaming a women for being attacked by suicide bombers?! I've never heard such ridiculous logic in my life! Why not look at the problem (these fanatics) rather than the women who was trying to solve these conflicts.

Totally agree, thistlemad is a disgrace and clearly doesn't understand the situation.

Ms Bhutto knew and understood the risks when she returned from exile, that alone and the added pressure of being pro western in an increasingly Islamic extremist country, makes her for me an honourable and brave lady who will be sadly missed not only by her family and supporters but by those in the west who saw her as a brave and bold ally in the fight against extremism

As I said before, your opinion (although you are entitled to it) does not matter to me.
I obviously have a better grasp than you do, although I will not resort to name calling since I am more intelligent than that.

First, I blamed her for the deaths of those who were caught NEAR her in the explosion.
SHE knew the risks, those around her at the time probably had little idea of the EXTENT of the threats made against her.
Second, the woman and her ministers were the thieving bassa`a who fled when they got caught with their fingers in the till and were responsible to the same degree or more for the current state of Pakistan.
Third, I deal with moslems on a daily basis and find them on the whole to be the most corrupt and thieving people on the planet, that is the way they do business.
Do you REALLY think that 10 years of hard work buy you a million pound mansion????? While your income for income tax purposes is £300 a week???????? THAT is their way of life.
Who informed me of all this many years ago, before I started dealing with them????? My late father in law .......... A PAKISTANI. So NOW who doesn`t have a grasp of the situation?

to Insult Islam and to call Pakistani's all criminals and theives is totally and at the highest level of stupidity. Basic line is if you know nothing of the teachings of Islam then don't comment on it but state your opionion and if you are that much even more interested then why not call up central mosque and speak to the Central Imam and ask his opinion on what Islam says about this... better still if you can be bothered then better still why not go see the Imam at central mosque and there he or she will assist you in your lack of understanding of the faith and if you can move away from sky news and actually go and read some english translations then you may better understand if even further.

Muslims are people also so like any others if they do right or wrong then the person should be blamed not the faith as like all faiths they are not the ones who are if taught correctly and followed in the right manner promoting anything of the like.

Stick to the subject people.

Thistlemad seems to be the ONLY one who has a grasp of how Pakistanis work. Before I retired I refused point blank to do ANY work for Pakistanis. You negotiated a price with them, did the job, then they want to renegotiate it down again. If there are any new crooked dodges to be found,a **** will find it.Regarding living next to one.Just wait until his relatives start buying up the street, cos no whites are going to buy in when the value of their house will fall.I lived and worked with them for 8 years in Burnley and I saw first hand how they operate.Pakistan is going through the motions of trying to catch Al Queda, just enough to appease the US to keep pouring money into the Country.Bhutto was just another power hungry politician in a corrupt land.No tears from me.She knew the risks, but greed, not human kindness drove her.

The best post so far! It is about time people started telling it like it is - the way that the other 98.9% of the population see it but are too afraid to say.

Thank you Albannach.
Ask MOST Scots born tradesmen that question and the reply will be the same as yours.
By the way MR T I am one of the few who refuse to pay for SKY therefor no SKY news in my household.

When a born and bred Pakistani lets you know they are a NATION of thieves and fraudsters then you HAVE to listen.
I have learned enough in the last 15 years of dealing with them to realise that my late father in law was correct.
Never cross your mind that there were allegations of fraud against Sarwar for years? and that was BEFORE the Govan fiasco!!!
Or how about his son, convicted of fraud? Or the fact that 99% of moslem "businesses2 are all CASH business????????
OPEN YOUR EYES FFS!!!!!!!!!!!
