Posted by: glamkitty, Glasgow on 11:38am Tue 15 Jan 08 Hang on. Costs of £373million set against expected income (by no means certain) of £75 million? Doesn't seem like a very sound investment to me... Posted by: Sydney Meriwether, Glasgow on 11:42am Tue 15 Jan 08 This is an off-topic comment: look closely at the small red PO box behind the gun-toting polis above and you will see at least four different coloured graffiti tags on this small bit of street furniture. Is this further evidence of Clean Glasgow's resounding success??? Posted by: Biffo the bear, beano town on 12:07pm Tue 15 Jan 08 Great that they can find the money for this but not for making the streets safer all year round or to provide parking spaces for the able-bodied among us,i feel discriminated against & i think il sue the council, bound to win, every other chancer does.. Posted by: Sydney Meriwether, Glasgow on 12:08pm Tue 15 Jan 08 Good point glamkitty, I'll defer to the experts on this: A recent (28th November 2007) article in the marketing industry's highly-respected trade magazine, Marketing, entitled, "In the shadow of the Olympics?", marketing expert Richard Gillis began by saying that "Attracting big-name sponsors to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games could prove tough". Mr Gilis went on to say that, "the downside (of marketing Glasgow 2014) is that the sheer scale of the Olympics may crowd out the smaller event", adding ominously that, "some fear that the glamour of the Olympics will leave its poorer cousin in the shade". At the end of the article, Mr Gillis quoted Steve Martin, chief executive of M&C Saatchi Sport & Entertainment, who said, "there is a lack of stardust about the Commonwealth Games". Mr Martin then described Glasgow 2014 as a 'tough sell' for property which is 'very much second tier' and will struggle to get national UK brands on its roster. Maybe even a modest £75million will not be attainable under the circumstances. Over 70% of our venues are already in place, and 20% are committed, so we will avoid many of the problems associated with large capital projects." quote] And im sure that the olympic committe in Sydney and Athens said the exact same thing and they are still paying the price for it. Brining his event to glasgow was more about boosting already inflated councillors/so called politicians egos rather than bringing benefits to the city. Crime will increase and the citzens of Glasgow will be left with the after affects for years to follow these games like the olympic games have become so comercialised that the chosen cities cannot realistically cope with the financial demands. The spirit of the games was lost years ago thanks the greedy politicians and their sponsors who are the only ones to gain anything. Posted by: jrb, Glasgow on 1:22pm Tue 15 Jan 08 I See that over £9.3 million will be spent on private sector security,With the games over six years ahead, I would expect the costing of this and the existing budget for the games to rise considerably.Would it not be possible for Glasgow city council, instead of employing these security firms which may or may not be run by criminals,To recruit, train and run their own security,I don't see any problem with such move it will provide employment, and when the games are over they could be used to patrol streets, schools, shopping centres,The existing wardens we have at the moment concentrate mostly on youth crime ,and anti-social behavior it would take much to retrain them in the level of security needed for the Glasgow games... Posted by: jim, Glasgow on 2:23pm Tue 15 Jan 08 I see that the Gvt in London are going to cream the National lotto for to finance the olympics!as well as the scratch card donations now. Posted by: Sydney Meriwether, Glasgow on 2:36pm Tue 15 Jan 08 Mr Purcell added: "The budget has been thoroughly assessed. Over 70% of our venues are already in place, and 20% are committed, so we will avoid many of the problems associated with large capital projects." Oh dear, he's forgot already the cooncil's major acquisition problems with Grantly developers, who own a piece of land in Dalmarnock vital to the plan. According to the quoted, budgeted plan, the 2.8 acre plot of brownfield land is intended to be the entrance to the athletes' village in Dalmarnock, but Grantly have drawn up plans for Scotland's tallest skyscraper with 55-storeys. No major problems indeed... Grantly have had the land at valued at £6.2m and are asking for £7.8m! Posted by: pete, Bearsden on 2:45pm Tue 15 Jan 08 Posted by: Old school, Ayrshire on 2:47pm Tue 15 Jan 08 A disgusting waste of public funds. Think of all the police man hours that will be involved in coverage of this 'pageant'while mugging and robbery will no doubt increase due to police not being available. The people who derive most benefit from thes type of events are the politicians and their 'hangers on'. The projections are that 'Lord' Seb Coe will personally benefit to the tune of around 8 million from the London Olympics. It makes me sick, I dont think the ancient Greeks had this in mind when they started it off. Posted by: The Missing City, Glasgow on 6:07pm Tue 15 Jan 08 MORE than £26million will be spent on making the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow the safest ever. And folks, that'll be just to make sure our rods and bridges are safe to use, before they start giving it yee har that terorrists are going to blow everybody up in Glasgow. Yes folks, lets get really freaked out so we can all be on the sick with worry and we can all be depressed maniacs by the time 2014 arrives!
