Go-ahead for city’s £100m hospital

by Vivienne Nicoll

HERE is the first glimpse of how Glasgow's new Southern General superhospital' will look.

It will take up to 10 years to complete and cost more than £100million, but when finished will become the UK's largest and most modern healthcare campus.

The move is part of the biggest shake-up of healthcare services in the West of Scotland for a generation.

Planners yesterday gave the go-ahead for the hospital to be built at the Shieldhall site.

Staff numbers will more than double with adult, children's and maternity hospitals being brought together on the one site.

It has also been revealed that health chiefs are to make a "substantial" contribution towards a hospital access transport scheme.

Bed numbers will rise from 900 to just over 1900 and staff numbers will soar from 4230 to more than 10,000.

The new Southern General, which will be the main hospital in the south of the city, will cater for around 725,000 patients each year.

While welcoming the hospital go-ahead, some councillors questioned whether roads in the area would be able to cope with increased traffic.

Planning manager Tom Turley said: "The NHS have produced a draft green travel plan which looks at that in detail and what can be achieved."

He said there would be additional public transport and a dedicated travel co-ordinator would be appointed.

Crucial to the hospital's links would be the Clyde Fastlink service which will initially operate between the city centre and Glasgow Harbour.

Under the Health Board's plans, Fastlink will run into the hospital grounds with a transport hub, at the entrance to the hospital, which could accommodate shuttle buses and taxis.

The new car park will have 2400 spaces for staff and 1200 for patients and visitors.

According to the planning boss the main hospital building will be 12 or 13 storeys high.

A business case for the new hospital will be presented to the Scottish Government later this month with a decision expected in February.

Tom Divers, chief executive of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: "This marks the beginning of the next phase of our ambitious hospital construction and service re-design programme to deliver the most modern acute healthcare services in the UK.

"The overall development will see Glasgow become home to the biggest and most modern healthcare campus in the UK.

"The process has benefitted from sound collaborative working between ourselves, city planners and the other agencies involved."

If its going to take this long to build then it will hardly be the most modern & up to date in the UK & given that the tenders will go to the lowest bidder &/or friends of the council..

Good point caller..... these journalists are at it again, putting their foot in their mouths, and rushing the article in question.

Anyway - I detect a few problems, not least with The Clyde Tunnel continually plagued by closures, contraflows and long tailbacks - why build it there ?

This is not simply about finding whatever sites are available and plonking the Superhospitals, or schools of the future there.

This is about proper planning, and doing what is in the best interest of the Public who will use the facilities - have these town planners and councillors any intentions of using the hospital themselves ? or will they alot of them have Private Health Care packages ?

Our new buildings age so much quicker due to the speed at which modernisation takes place.
So, 10 years may not seem very long.
The way our new buildings are designed, and materials used its hardly any surprise they age so much quicker.

Finally, where is the point in spending such huge volumes of our money, without some kind of private investment - money sneaking in, and innevitably without the upper level of the predicted budget peaking way above £100 million - as these projects always do in the end.

It will be interesting to see the plans for approach roads for this new hospital, with the Clyde tunnel on one side and the M.8 On the other, the present set up with the govan road entrance, and bogmoor road which is basically a side entrance is totally inadequate hopefully this will be sorted out before and not when the hospital is up and running....

Just a collection of boxes clumped together.

Modern construction at its very best!

How long will it last?

It will last as long as the building industry gets away with this almost criminal behaviour towards its use of materials, and shoddy workmanship.

FACT: New Builds of todays standards are simply inadequate, and not designed to last the test of time. Which begs the question, why plough £100 million into this joke of a "Superhospital" - when ( due to inflation, and interest rates in future) it could be more like £150 million by the time work is complete.

Top quality comment Lady J, liked that one from yesterday too!!

Will they ever take heed?

Ah don't thinkso!!!!

Our money will continue to be poured down a massive hole!

I don't believe there's any point in posting stuff on here, who exactly listens or takes any of it in?

Considering a lot of the comment is fair and constructive, those in power should take some notes, or maybe that is below them!

Why build it there? Because the council will have an excuse to build another bridge over the Clyde!

Take ten years to build and be out-dated upon completion. So much honesty there ET I'm almost lacking stress...

Can see the board members of GGCHB, end of year one, ten million spent & the hat comes oot, busking in the causey, robbing the old, sick & the infirmary and even the GP tae pay for the next installment. Year two and teh pressure is on, twenty million spent and still not even a car park, never mind a patient treament centre. So they go out on the rob again, this time is the inapt Community Care & Health Partnerships that feel the pinch, staff told not to leave their offices, stay in-doors and think nothing (no change then). Year three and twenty million sunk & finaly the contruction crews get toilets, but yet still with no soap. a board member in a desperate attempt to shift the focus takes up a real job, working as a hospital cleaner, but gets sacked having smuggled bleach into the ward to save a penny. Year four and almost half way their, well we have to talk this up. yes they screwed the contractor again, the construction site grounds to a halt, they are all out on strike, the GGCHB desperately suck on cold air, only to expell the remains from their back-sides. The hospital arrives in the brown
(full of deciet) 2022. A year later phase one wards are closed for refurbishment. "WE DID IT"
hails the ill health board.

Cheers Missing City,

Seems that we commenters / posters on this here forum / E.T. website are the only ones with common sense or brains.

Why don't any Council officials respond to these here posts ? Cos they don't have the gumption or the balls to think of a response.
