A wonderful, spectacular, extraordinary meeting. The Council were routed by sheer overwhelming people power!
Sadly, the contempt shown by Messrs. Robert Booth and Stephen Curran to the people of Glasgow was truly shocking. Democracy in action is too much for them to handle.

I couldn't believe the turnout at the meeting. The great disappointment was that in the face of such strong opposition the Council are steadfast in their refusal to re-run the consultation exercise that so many people didn't seem to know anything about. I don’t know what the Council have to loose by having an open and well publicised consultation process.
Rober Booth made a valid point that people objected to the kids playground, the Burrell Collection and the mountain bike course. The response that these are all free misses the more valid point that the level of opposition here is overwhelming. The Council and especially the elected members need to be very careful about showing such contempt for the public.

The incompetence of Robert Booth is astonishing. where an MSP tells him that he has done a woefully inadequate job over the consultation and he pretends that he has done his job is nutty. Booth's actions need to be scrutinised leagally here. He has broken his own rules over the consultation. How can asking the opinons have secondary school children count towards the consultation. He has acted illegally and needs to be sacked.

Mr Booth's arrogance and inflexibility seem to demonstrate that he has no genuine interest in what the General Public think of this proposal ( or any others for that matter?). His hubristic stance revealed that he regards public consultation as little more than a meaningless chore.

High praise indeed for all those who attended this Public Meeting and put the Council Officials to shame, as well as raising the clear issue that Robert Booth is clearly out of line in his actions.
He may well wish to carry out the Consultation Exercise - AGAIN - What he fails to realise is that those who were as apathetic the last time, could be just as apatheric this time.
And, more often than not - only those who are the most ardent, and passionate about their cause are the ones who send back their objections, write to their Councillors, or MSP's and generally are the most pro - active.
I wish all those on the committee or steering group of The "Save Pollok Park" (from "Go Ape!) the best of luck in their fight!
This is indeed as TICL said, about "People Power!" and if Glasgow City Council fails to listen to the voices of these 500 people, possibly more - (i.e those who couldn't attend.) it is failing the electorate at its most basic and fundamental level.
THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE - AND CANNOT BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN - THE ELECTORATE MUST BE HEARD & LISTENED TO.

Is this the same Glasgow City Council that gave us the refurbished Kelvingrove? The same Parks Dep't under whose management and planned developmnt Pollok Park was given the accolade as the Best in Britain? The same administration who, against international competition, won the Commonwealth Games for Glasgow?
Get a grip. Those who oppose this particular project have every right to be heard but it hardly helps the merits of the argument to gratuitously insult and impugn hard working officials and elected representatives.

Forbes Aiken - please get a grip. I have seen your trolling on The Herald website as well, on this and other matters.
The insults directed at Robert Booth and cronies on this discussion are far less serious than his insulting attitude to the people of Glasgow last night, which was a dangerous affront to democracy.
Besides, in what possible way is charging [bold]25 pounds[/bold] for access to currently unrestricted forest in the interests of the vast majority of Glaswegians?
Thankfully, the strength of your support is in the 1% bracket. And well done to all of those who came last night, and to Save Pollok Park, who have done so much good work.

The right decision would be to leave Pollok Park as it is. It does not need the likes of this 'Go Ape attraction'.
Lets not forget, the mid-1990's seen Pollok Park ripped apart during construction of the M77 Motorway, now the park is really in Pollokshaws, with a small section on the western side of the motorway in Pollok.

But yes, the council does not give a stuff what people think, this is plainly obvious with what went on here last night - if the people say something, the coluncil will say the exact opposite, so the only way to curb this is to remove the stinking and rather devious Labour Party once and for all, so the re will be no more jobs for the boys, no more cliques etc

Here we go again...once more I smell a GNAT
Typical streetfighting of the political variety. If Glasgow was under SNP administration I just wonder how many of the posters here would take the same tak. Take note, I am not a Labour apologist, I just get rather bored by the 'strength of feeling' many of you have for 1% use of a park which will not impinge on the actual footprint of walkers and will provide a unique attraction to Glasgow. Taking issue with proposals is one thing, challenging elected members is another thing (both very legitimate) but insulting paid Council Officers is not acceptable.

The city council has multi-member ward now, so there are councillors from other parties who have Pollok Park in their area, and up to now, they haven't been too clever in opposing it. Sturgeon at the meeting last night didn't express outright opposition to the proposal - she merely asked for the consultation to be rerun.
Now go take your paranoia elsewhere, or we'll call in the Blade Runners.

This issue is bigger than people think. Its about elected people running over the wishes of their electorate undermining democracy.
1. Will the park be improved by Go Ape? Probably not!
2. Will the majority of the people who already use the park for excercise benefit. Probably not!
3. Is £2000 per year to the Council (people of Glasgow ) worth it.
4. Will the sheds they propose in the park be Fireproof. Probably not.
5. Will people have a pee or worse behind a tree cause the toilets are to far away. probably!

2. Will the majority of the people who already use the park for excercise benefit. Probably not!
3. Is £2000 per year to the Council (people of Glasgow ) worth it.
4. Will the sheds they propose in the park be Fireproof. Probably not.
5. Will people have a pee or worse behind a tree cause the toilets are to far away. probably!

The Labour Council will not back down in the face of some tin pot meeting. Labour stands for progress while the SNP just attach themselves to any passing band wagon.

The meeting was amazing. I'm one of the few councillors who has publically come out against the plan, I was proud of the number people present in that hall, 900 plus (legal maximum for the hall is 750 and people were standing in every space in the hall, and in the corridor and the car park not able to get in).
Just because the value the (Labour) council and most of the SNP Cllrs attach to peace and quiet is zero, the rest of us do not have to agree. What a confrontation Nichola (SNP) v Colin (SNP)! How odd to me to have Executive members screaming at the audience of (750 - 1000?) that people had been adequately consulted. So - those in the room had clearly failed to take heed of the wonderful council consultation and will just have to suffer the consequences - is that the message?
Go Ape seems a good company to me, and their other (out of town) courses look fun, but with
a motorway on one side of the park; two big car parks within it; [bold]one[/bold] historic wood [bold]must[/bold] be left in peace!
I believe Cllr Curran when he says a more extensive consultation was undertaken for this than is usually done. Given how inadequate this one still was - (the idea of handing out leaflets in the park for instance does not seem to have occured to anyone) - it just goes to prove how bad the usual arrangements are!!
The Labour executive can now decide that it will not let the land (it looks after in our name!) be used for this purpose. It does NOT have to go to planning as the owner of the land can say no to any proposed use. Go Ape may feel they have been mislead by the council and walk away. If the council lets it to planning, I hope all will write to the Cllrs on the planning committee, and tell them what they think!

Nicely said Paul.
I reckon Tristan from Go Ape! should withdraw his application and re-submit it so that a fresh consultation can take place with everyone with an interest in the park and it's future present.
It keeps with their good news regime and , if successful, will have the people of Glasgow behind it. If not, which is likely, it still shows that they consider the current users of environments they could develop's concerns and support democratic rule.
Win-Win if you ask me.

Paul[/quote] Im a local resident (Pollokshaws) there has been NO information regarding this locally. Mr Curran stated it was in the Extra, i dont get that, unless you pick it up in the arcade or the library (and its mince anyway). The actions and words of the councillors last night was a disgrace and Cllr Simpson and her banshee act left me speechless.
As for people who moaned about the M77 - was there really a need to put it through a bit of the park? How many of us know about the full plans for the future extension of Silverburn too?

There are some very pertinent points in the the follwing ET article from two years ago:
[bold]Article[/bold]:Firm bids to bring treetop asssault courses to city
[bold]Author[/bold]: Vivienne Nicoll
[bold]Date[/bold]: January 20th, 2006
[italic]Some extracts[/italic] :
[quote]Daredevils with a head for heights could soon be swinging through the treetops in three Glasgow parks.
Leisure bosses have been approached by an English company which wants to build aerial assault courses - 20ft up in the air - made up of a network of rope bridges, trapezes and death slides....
Councillors have backed the scheme and will now advertise for firms interested in designing, installing and operating the courses.
It is likely whoever is appointed will be expected to pay the council a percentage of the profits and to employ local people.
One firm, Go Ape, operates similar ventures across England.
Parks boss Kenny Boyle said he hoped the treetop adventure scheme could be installed in three city parks - [bold]possibly Pollok, Dawsholm and an east end park[/bold]...
Mr Boyle insisted there would be no damage to the trees and revealed the Forestry Commission has allowed similar aerial assault courses on their land.
He added: "[bold]Once we get a company in, we will get them to produce a presentation and they will then go out and talk to local groups to explain the project[/bold].
Leisure bosses believe Pollok Park, which already has attractions like the Burrell Collection, Pollok House, a mountain bike trail, sports facilities, a new children's playground and award-winning Highland cattle, would be ideal for the new attraction.
But Mr Boyle is also keen for a similar project to be created in Dawsholm Park which at the moment has few attractions.
It is also possible one of the assault courses could be set up in the east end although parks bosses say they will assess interest in the first venture before considering expanding it across the city.
It is hoped the first of the treetop assault courses will be open by summer next year.[/quote]

Sydney, I think the company [bold]they were meant to get in[/bold] was a PR company or some such other and just never got round to it.
As soon as they hire one, they'll [bold]then[/bold] make the presentation and [bold]then[/bold] go out and talk to [italic]very specific groups[/italic] that don't represent the majority of communities of the park and [bold]then[/bold] explain that this is what's happening regardless of what they say.

Shame they can't realise how to do the tree top bit by themselves.

Thanks Scott, I've re-read the full article and a couple of others and there is certainly something fishy about this! The company they are referring to is the company who would be "interested in designing, installing and operating the courses". Therefore here it is Go Ape... [bold]did Go Ape give presentations to local community groups as part of the 'extensive consultation' process[/bold]???

I agree with my earlier post on the Herald website!
Tristram should recognize that if the current Go-Ape application is approved without a competent and adequate consultation (i.e. the situation now), the name of his Company will not be associated good news. I can't say what it WILL be associated with (who knows where this will end up) but it WON'T be good news.
Go Ape have been put into an embarrasing situation by GCC's clearly inadequate consultation exercise. Tristram should withdraw the current application, re-submit an application in which the boundary aligns more closely with the footprint of the proposed development, and see if that gets the support of the users of the park.
If the resubmitted application is not successful, I am sure that GCC will be so embarrassed that they will lay on free public transport to less central but more suitable sites. I'm sure they will build toilets and car parks if they are required too. I can think of at least two suitable sites on the outskirts of Glasgow.
Tristram should withdraw the current application, re-submit an application in which the boundary aligns more closely with the footprint of the proposed development, and see if that gets the support of the users of the park.

jrb, I fully understand, and agree with your disgruntled and frustrated rant, so well put there. What it is high time we did is seek out those worthy politicians and councillors - despite being able to count them on one hand.
Until we can genuinely say, hand on heart that we believe what our Councillors / Politicians say and trust in their actions it is a very sad and depressing day for democracy.
Perhaps the time has come for us to actively attend our Councillors surgeries, and grill them for all it is worth. Until people come out of their "comfort zones" and start challenging the party line so many Councillors are towing - how else can we see things change?
Those who pay their taxes have every right to be completely apathetic and disgruntled with politicians today - but - until they stand up, speak out and challenge the way our system is failing what alternatives do we have ?

People power is showing the obvious benefits of standing up and speaking out so how come we are seeing no benefits from her complaints. Cause she is a moaner and politicians love to ignore moaners. The thing I find miraculous in all this is that the council agreed to this in the first place. All this garbage about paying 25 quid to visit a park that used to be free is baloney. If a private company invests 200,000 pound to make a truly unique form of entertainment they are entitled to charge for it. I dont see the council setting up any activity parks for the poor children of glasgow they will be lucky if they still have a park that hasn't been bricked over.

Yes, okay jrb, I see your point, but this is why those of us who have an ounce of community spirit, or belief of any sort should do our utmost to seek out the Politicians who can stick to their word through thick and thin.
Like I said - you can count them upon one hand.
But - one is better than none, and if we do not grill, challenge and push these so called represntatives of the electorate, what have we got left - but a bunch of self-serving, fat, greedy and two faced nobodys who just want to have their cake and eat it.
Yes - the Socialists - of which I was miguided enough to be part of ( before the controversy) have perhaps stirred peoples consciences, and at least made people think of the potential alternatives to Capitalism.
Free School Meals, An Alternative to The Unfair Council Tax, and a far more respectable minimum wage ( heaven forbid!)
But, those high waged, greedy and self-fulfilling in society extend way beyond politicians. We can be equally as guilty of dropping our morals, and being self fulfilling.
Maybe then, we need to care more about one another, look out for our community members, neighbours, friends and even strangers, and do a good deed however small. We have to start somewhere, and by looking deep within ourselves we can hopefully find the answers we are looking for.
Do we care about "Pollok Park" or do we want to sit back aimlessly till it is too late ?
Or should we actively play a role in ensuring what is done is best for the ordinary people, not those greedy bu**ers on the gravy train.
Shame we cannot all make more effort for the good of the planet and future generations. But, unless we do so, we will be victims of our own ignorance - with future floods, or coastal erosion. We must all wake up and play our part! ( rant suspended. . . .at 17:41)

Well said missing city the first time I have ever agreed with an internet posting in the history of posting. Shame you was being facetious. The lack of investment in this country is a direct result of the people not wanting to change. If all of our park space in Glasgow is added up and the three acres taken as a percentage of available space it would be not even 1000th of a percent of park space in Glasgow. How many go ape type facilities exist to allow kids to fall in love with the environment on a hands on basis within Glasgow not one by my or go apes count.

Scouting can give a better understanding of nature, doesn't confuse local wildlife with too many alien noises and isn't a commercial venture.
In fact a local Scout troop planted a tree in Pollok to celebrate the centenary of both Scouting and their own troop. This was after they had helped clean part of the river and thin out some of the woods.
100 years of nature for children being celebrated! Sounds like the park is already in tune with youth and environmental issues.
Falling in love with nature, via Go Ape! ain't falling in love with nature. It's thrill seeking for the cowardly rich who could quite easily drive their SUVs that little bit further out of the city.
I guess I'm going to have to sign up with the 'With us or against us' mob because without reading any coherent rationale to back up a stratagem [bold]for[/bold] Go Ape! I may as well be talking to the councillors from last night who were blindly opposed to the public without any intelligent reason they could articulate.
Mind you, the Scouts could have been thinning out the trees for the Go Ape! facility.
Child labour, now there is a smart idea. I wonder if there are any children in the world without rights we could exploit? Probably just be cheaper to use children here, after all this isn't really a democratic country so they have no rights.
Perhaps those [bold]for[/bold] the development could pay them a penny an hour to bash their heads on their keyboards and post whatever gibberish that comes out as their arguments on the net.
It could only make it more coherent.
I'm [bold]against[/bold] and you should be too.

I use Pollok Park on a daily basis to say that this area will not effect areas you can access and state [italic][bold]"We only use the tree tops so where you walk today you would be able to walk tomorrow.[/bold][/italic] I beg to differ as I will not be able to walk in the area you plan to build go ape as I would not be paying £25 to come in to the allocated area.
Pollok Park is a public park how can this be right to plan to build this within a public park that does not havr the road or parking capacity for this type of activity.
Someone at Glasgow City Council has alot to answer too.
It is strange that no-one got to hear about this when it was proposed

Hmm... how many of the protesters at last night's meeting use the M77 now, and how many protested against it at the time? The hypocrisy is probably best ignored. It's only a small adventure trail, not a 'desecration'! Were there similar protests against building the Burrell?
Hmmm...how much do people get charged to use the Burrell or the M77, Pete? Not £45, that's for sure. As for "small", go look at a map of it...
I see, so now the issue is the cost. The plot thickens. Not exactly addressing my point.
Is this the protected magical land where fairies and elves roam the enchanted forest and motorways cost nothing to build?

Pete & frank did you not get breast fed as children is this why you both have serious chips on your shoulders?..This park is public property, given to the city by the Maxwell family for the people to use not for the council to do with as they please..
As for the comment regarding the Burrell Collection, people come from all over the world to see it & it is free, it is not just for the elite as this project will be..
Game on. lets take it to the council..

Your point seems to be that because the park got vandalised in the past, it's OK to do it again, which isn't even worth addressing.
The council is trying to sell this proposal, in part, on the grounds that it will increase use of the park among young people. That'll be the kids able to afford 45 quid a pop and go along with mum or dad, that is. And with only 450 free spaces a year being offered to Glasgow schools, that's less than 1 secondary school a year getting a free go.

Is this the same Glasgow City Council that gave us the refurbished Kelvingrove?
--------------------
-----
Yes, the same Council who gave us a "museum and art gallery" featuring such high-brow events such as "The Kylie Exhibition". And displays about violence against women. My, one can just smell the history and value of these exhibits eh? God.
--
The same administration who, against international competition, won the Commonwealth Games for Glasgow?
--
Oh yes, International Competition against the mighty abuja, a city which cant guarantee electricity supply, in one of the most violent and corrupt countries in the world. Well done, what a magnificent achievement to beat abuja.
Thanks for highlighting some of the councils recent "triumphs" (ha) Forbes.

For the sake of clarity - My interpretation of what the National Trust for Scotland representative said at the meeting was that [italic]...NTS had not lodged any objection to the application but NTS were unhappy at not being consulted...[/italic]
In fact, NTS [bold]HAVE[/bold] lodged a formal objection - on the grounds that NTS were not adequately consulted.
So there's an objection from one of the partners responsible for managing the Park.
Surely the Planning Committee will have to address this objection and consult with NTS even if they do not feel the need to conduct a proper consultation with the current users of the Park?
