£15m scheme to tackle obesity

A DIET scheme that has helped hundreds of people lose a life-changing amount of weight is being extended across Scotland.

It's part of a £15million plan to tackle obesity.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon has promised to introduce Counterweight across Scotland after it proved a success among people at risk from heart disease and diabetes in Lanarkshire.

The move is part of a new £40m investment in healthier lifestyles announced yesterday.

The minister told MSPs £15m would be spent over the next three years specifically on helping dangerously overweight patients.

She said: "Obesity is one of the biggest threats to our nation's health. That's why we will make tackling it, particularly in early years, a key priority."

The funding will also support schemes that encourage people of all ages to maintain a healthy weight through exercise and watching what they eat.

Pre-school children and expectant mothers will be offered free fruit to improve diet.

Patients in the Counterweight scheme get a series of appointments with a specially-trained practice nurse or auxiliary, supervised by a dietician.

Weight management adviser Marney Quinn said: "One in seven people referred to us lose at least 5% of their body weight within a year."

Successful patients lose enough weight to cut blood pressure and cholesterol levels, lowering their risk of a heart attack, stroke or cancer.

An NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde spokeswoman welcomed the new funding announced by Ms Sturgeon and said tackling obesity was a key priority for the board.

Patients in the Counterweight scheme
Wonder if the Glasgow city councillors would partake. We could not only off-set or carbon emission, but also our body fat. Write no more on the subject.

Free Fruits on Public Areas to Curb Spreading Obesity

Fruits are low in calories and highly nutritional already grown on public places at increasing ratios to face obesity trends. Tree climbing also can be a body exercise for kids harvesting fruits.

Fruits have around four times more water content than cookies and easily satisfy hunger taking less energy. Refrigerators full of fruits easily beat junkies.

In Brazil we are increasing fruit trees in the public areas changing the country to a large tropical orchard. Then, sidewalks, squares, parks, roadsides will be plenty of free fruits bearing appropriate food to fight spreading obesity. Free fruits are protected from the power of the economic system pursuing profitability.

Other countries are invited to join us on a fight against global obesity toward a Public Fructification. Brazil intends to become a developed country without common problems of a superpower.

Planting fruit trees is easy!.

Throwing money at the problem will not fix it.
Stop school children money during the day and they will not be able to eat between meals.Buy school lunches. Stop supermarkets sell two or even more for price of one to prevent obesity and waste food. Control takeaways and campaign against eating between meals for all.
A bit of self control training would go a long way to slimming people down. Where there is a will there is a way

"Get Fit, Not Fat!" - It's that simple.... in theory!

Just too many cheap, un-nutritional, and high in fat ready made meals which we all fall prey to.

Even Leisure Centres selling portions of chips says it all. Hardly the message we should be giving to the rest of the world - when 2014 dawns!

Wake up Britain, and get off your lazy bu**s!
Nobody said it was easy - or enjoyable, but the long term benefits of being your recommended weight - as well as in better health speak for themselves.

A situation I saw recently was a stark message for all those who are becoming obese, before it gets too late.
A woman who could not fit in the toilet cubicle in a West End pub/ restaurant.

Did she have the right to complain though ?

This is a sad reflection on society today when people are getting so big they cannot live a "normal" life, without massive exceptions literally, made to accomodate them in everyday life!

There are a variety of different reasons why someone is overweight and people in this situation should not be judged.

I know first hand what Counterweight can do for people as I was one of the staff who helped to pilot this projects in Lanarkshire.
They notonly give the nutritional advice that is needed, but the first step to understanding why they have got to the stage of needing help. If they can understand why they make the choices that they do, it then helps them to get out of all the habits that have formed over a number of years.

Do not presume that someone who is overweight has a bad diet, there are different reasons, that they do not need to share with you.

They want the help and it is here in the form of Counterweight. The staff are very highly skilled and offer counselling as part of the programme.

Do not comment on what you do not understand!!!

This is giving people the chance of longer lives and you to may need the help someday as it is not only for obese people, they help with people who are diabetic, which is becoming more popular by the day.......you never know one day it could be you needing this help, will you then say it's a waste of money and to get up of your butts!!!

I don't think so .
