The tree huggers would have us living in caves if they had their way. The M74 extension must go ahead without delay. It will relieve the congestion on the M8 through the city centre which traffic heading through Glasgow has no alternative but to use. Why anyone give this minority lot the time of day beats me. Remember Swampy and his lot that caused all the delays to the M77? Never forget the wee wummin' from Corkerhill complaining that the traffic on the M77 would cause all sorts of health problems for her and kids due to the fumes.....She was speakin' with a fag hanging from her mouth....LOL!!!

The Greens should crawl back into the caves. Look at the windfarm in Lewis. A clean source of electricity scuppered due to environmentalists. Do they offer an alternative ? do they hell so lets have a nuclear power station in Larkhall. The greens and envoronmentalists really need to take a look at themselves and get real either that get them to sod off to some underdeveloped swamp and leave them to rock and roll

I am sure that most of these "green people" live in homes supplied with gas and electricity and no doubt drive gas guzzler cars on Glasgows overcrowded road network. Why don`t they all gather together and move to one of the barren unoccupied islands in the Outer Hebrides. Lets see how long they survive without any of the pleasures normal people have. If they were all to practice what they preach instead of being two faced hypocrits maybe they would be taken more seriously. Let Glasgow flourish in this century instead of holding us in a time warp and becoming a giant car park and the laughing stock of the world.

bigcrispyhied don't be a daft plug or some working class snob the working classes are the punters who spend the most of the time stuck in traffic. Oh and in case you don't have a map or plan handy taking the line through Kelvinside would make it a 'lang road fur a short cut'

To be able to connect with the M8 south of the Kingston Bridge will be a godsend for everyone living in the South and East of the city.
All we hear about is delay after delay on this, yet the M8 through Glasgow is one of the most congested roads in the UK.

The M74 is an essential part of the jigsaw in the continuing ecenomic regeneration of of Glasgow and much of West Central Scotland besides. We have had far too my delays on this project already whih will have the added benefit of cleaning up many areas of polluted ground.

As working class and brought up in the East End and who has lived on and off for about 10 years in the South West, I find the nonsense spouted by the likes of the Green Party in trying to delay the M8 extension as extremely annoying. I hope they aren't driving 4x4s but I doubt if they live anywhere like Parkhead or Dalmarnock or Mosspark. Then they would appreciate the utter necessity of the extension. Maybe they could join those who love birds more than people, who seem to have stopped the wind farm on Lewis, and live on St Kitts or the like and probably freeze to death in a couple of hours.

seymore, the kelvinside crack was a hypothetical question, this working class snob cant even afford a car to run on this road to shangri-la ,i maybe giving it the knee jerk n.i.m.b.y. reaction but are you going to be living next to it with the pollution, dust, walls of concrete and noise that is all part of a motorway extention.

However they still knocked most of this area down regardless.

Two seperate issues are getting confused here:
1. Is the M74 extension a good or bad idea?
2. Does the proposed construction contract meet EU public procurement requirements?

The issue with the M74 is that the current roads were probably wrong anyway, not many other towns have motorways running east west through them and this leads to us needing to solve this issue. I think you'd be better if you move the road to another location, but the effect on traffic won't be as much, but better for people nearby.
I think we need to build it, but for people thinking this will 'solve' the problem of congestion on the M8 and Kingston Bridge, I fear your going to be disappointed. The public enquiry stated that the effect of the road is short lived and it will exacerbate congestion on the M77, and M8 from Paisley-Helen Street. Sure we have a new road, and traffic will ease initially, but then new pinch points emerge, and with traffic eased more people will say, heck I can live in Airdrie and commute to Paisley until we have the same problem over again! Never ending cycle and I've seen the roads in Los Angeles- freeway heaven and even they make the Kingston Bridge queue of a morning look timid! 10 lanes all locked up! I guess you can't build your way out of congestion.
What Glasgow really needs is massive investment in public transport to the tune of £800m at the same time as any roads investment, with trains and buses in public hands.

The M74 extension should be completed because:
1. At present traffic from the south exits at Mt Vernon/Carmyle and proliferates pollution throughout the east and south of Glasgow. Ask a resident of Cambuslang, Rutherglen, Bridgeton or Shettleston if they wish the road completed so that this traffic is removed from streets never meant to carry the present volume of traffic.
2. The M8 and Kingston bridge can't cope with the present volume of traffic so that there is pollution around its environs.
3. The corridor designated for the extension is at present a mess of dilapidated buildings and waste land.
Finally, what right do a few greens have to disrupt commencement of construction when, I believe, the vast majority wishes the M74 to be completed once and for all?

I wouldn't say that to anyone from Rutherglen. The M74 will pass less than 200m from Rutherglen main street. Not sure how many people in the M74 corridor are for it, I know in Rutherglen, what is currently a vibrant main street with no vacant shops will suffer badly if the Tesco (as currently planned) goes ahead in preparation for completiton of M74. Does the South of Glasgow really need more retail parks/ malls, that will come with completion of M74, draining the local economy and small, independant businesses?
Plus it makes Glasgow look backward. London, Manchester, Edinburgh etc are all investing in trams, reinvigorating their centres, discouraging cars and out of town development, while Glasgow thinks it's still 1968 and the modern city needs as many motorways as possible ripping through it. £500 million could get a pretty decent tram network after all.
