A SOCIAL club in Glasgow's West End for Royal Air Force veterans has been put up for sale after more than 50 years.

The Royal Air Force Association in Woodlands is to close its doors at the end of next month.

It has gone on the market and is expected to be sold for around £300,000.

The club, which was established in 1952, is one of more than 500 branches run by the association and is the only place supporting former RAF servicemen and women and their families in Glasgow.

Its 200 veterans will now be accommodated at Glasgow University's Air Squadron headquarters club.

Jim Skelton, chairman of the RAF Association, said: "It's closing because there is a lack of support. The current committee has been in office for 15 years and they can't get anyone to run the club.

"We are all getting older and that was the reason for the final decision being taken. It's a great shame because it was a wonderful club, where we have had many, many great social nights.

"It used to be very popular and if you weren't there by 7.30pm, you wouldn't get a seat."

The B-listed Glasgow club in Ashley Street was also a popular location for young DJs who hosted small, alternative or underground club nights catering for music fans disillusioned by larger clubs.

One of the club nights, Spit Fire!, which has been held regularly at the RAFA Club for the past two years, has been forced to take a two-month break before it moves to an alternative venue at Blackfriars in the Merchant City.

The RAFA, which provides help and advice, comradeship, welfare and care for service personnel past and present and their families, has around 80,000 members across the UK.

The social club already has a licence so could still be used a social club of some sort after it is sold.

But property experts say it's likely be made into flats or office accommodation.

A spokesman for Glasgow-based commercial property agents DM Hall, which is marketing the site, said there had already been a lot interest.

Should have wrote: popular place of a junky Dj (Herbert), who would frequent a charity next door(cheap lunch) who would photocopy the tickets sold while still on benefits to anyone who would buy. Sader still as the charity's members will miss the place, the steps were often used for smoking cannabis. And funded from the NHS, and ran via an NHS board member(s).

I remember this club well when I went with my ex-RAF brother long before the disco time and as stated above it was a delightful lounge bar and down-stair there was a dance floor for a good variety of dances. Its a pity they could not have turned it into a general service club to allow ex-army types like myself to join and keep it going. Hopefully the club and members will still survive in their new premises and if they could allow other service types to join we could have a popular club again.

As someone who has used the RAFA club frequently, it is very sad to see it go. The staff, who are all volunteers, work their socks off to create a great place, but unfortunately as memebership dropped, it has to close. Many thanks to one and all, past and present, who have looked after the pool boys on a Friday night. We will miss you.
