I don't think we need the subway in Shawlands -we have excellent transport links through the existing rail and bus services. I think the rent increases on Shawlands Arcade, combined with the threat of Silverburn caused many businesses to leave in the last few years.

Might I suggest that building a tourist attraction (say, a tree top walkway) in a nearby park (ooh, maybe Pollok?) might bring some more people into the area.

Delighted to see that something might happen to revitalise Shawlands an area I know very well and have noticed the number of empty premises recently, particularly in the shopping centre. Good for Shawlands and Strathbungo C.C. for taking the initiative to get things moving.

All this gibber gabbering from Shawlands... Strathbungo (closer to Govanhill than Shawlands) never even made a whisper as Victoria road was being run down and amenities were being closed. Lets be honest Shawlands is the poor man's westend or the better-off southsider's govanhill. It's not that special an area...a cuple avearge delis, a bland faceless coffee shop on Skirvint st and some trully awful bars/nightclubs (Rosco's anyone?)

That's odd - I thought AWG were exiting their joint ventures and were winding up their property development team.

The people here dissing the idea of a subway link for shawlands are missing the bigger picture here. Shawlands is the gateway station that would lead on to giffnock , Newton Mearns , and if they have vision East Kilbride. That is the size that the Glasgow area needs. Secondly i agree that Shawlands nightlife has got better over the years with good pubs and restaurants but that needs to be counterbalanced by having good shops during the day for the locals. I still dont understand why Sainsburys left the arcade. It was always busy.

While it is sad to see the demise of Victoria Road, it has never had the potential or the appeal of Shawlands. As for bars, clubs and restuarants Shawlands can stand with the best with places such as the Urban Grill, Waverly Tearooms and the Shed. No need to make comparisons with the west end as it is good to have a lively, social area both sides of the river.

Dig a big hole, and plug with a car park and subway station. Shawlands is braw, worth a day oot.

was shawlands not revitalised a few years back.same will happen this time few years of being busy then downhill again.nobody can compete with the large supermarkets and centers like in polock/braehead.cath
cart rd failed in the eighties.victoria rd failed in the nineties now its shawlands turn.im not against trying to upgrade the shopping area i just dont see it surviving more than a couple of years.

The problem with Shawlands is simple. Parking is a nightmare enforced with a gestapo trained brigade of wardens.
I used to go there daily now I don't and thats the reason.
It's also one of the few places in my experience that operates both meters and wardens on a Sunday.

As with all the main drags on the South Side, the problem isn't the buildings or the shops/ bars/ restaurants - it's the stupid traffic management. The South Side is not exactly accessible to anyone who isn't local and hasn't forcibly learned to navigate the blocked off streets, one ways, bus lanes/gates and yellow lines everywhere.
When it's easier to drive to Tesco's in Silverburn for a pint of milk than pull up outside a shop on Victoria Road, there's only so much good polishing up a few buildings will do. Treating these places as focal points for their communities rather than urban clearways speeding the journey to the Mearns or Ayr it would be a start.

Shawlands Arcade needs to be gutted and restarted - it's like some horrible schemey arcade in one of these towns you see in England. A big car park underneath or on top of a revitalised arcade (can we come up with a new name too!) would surely be a big ease on the parking problem.
Also - should all of the clubs, bars and restaurants not be working together on their marketing? Rather than just the odds 'n' sods of flyers and occasional adverts you see now. They should be trying to get people from the CC and W.End over this side for nights out.
