End misery of jail life at Dungavel

by Wendy Miller

A TEACHER who sees at first hand the heartache of Dungavel detention centre's asylum seekers has called for it to be shut.

Linda McMahon, of Pollokshields, Glasgow said the former jail in Lanarkshire is "like a prison whose residents don't when they'll be released".

The 56-year-old is one of 20 volunteers who, through the Scottish Detainee Visitors scheme, supports people held there.

Every second Monday Linda visits asylum seekers who often feel depressed and isolated and she said: "Sometimes they want to talk about what they are going through other times they just want you to hold their hand."

Mum-of-four Linda, an English teacher at Mearns Castle Secondary, Newton Mearns, added: "We don't get to see their rooms but go into a big waiting area.

"I want Dungavel closed and I don't think we should have detention centres."

Dungavel, near Strathaven, can take almost 150 people and includes a 56-bed family unit.

Campaigners have called for the detention of children there to end, a move backed by Children's Secretary Fiona Hyslop who said: "The Scottish Government remain fundamentally opposed to dawn raids and the detention of children."

A Home Office spokesman added that the centre received praise last week in an annual report.

He said: "Her Majesty's Chief Inspectorate of Prisons has found Dungavel is a well-run establishment, founded on very good relationships between staff and detainees."

If the people in Dungavel want out, then all they have to do is agree to return home. Simple.

I see my comment has been removed. It seems that if you disagree with the teacher in the article, there is no point in posting comments. Why bother giving the option?

Where else are we supposed to put failed asylum seekers, Linda? No doubt you would prefer if they were put up in the Hilton, while the rest of us are given run down, damp council houses.

I am afraid I dont agree with the teacher either for a number of reasons, one being that Linda, I or anyone else would not be allowed to go into their countries and live of the state, be housed and be able to apply to university and have the government pay for it. I was at uni in London with a girl who came to the UK for refuge and she was able to get a student loan, her fees paid, and for a while housing benefit, help with her council tax and support for her child to attend a crech. Where is the sense in this? Linda if ur reading this then I suggest u should get some cash, take out a loan or something and jet them them all back home and argue their rights for them in their own countr and give us a break as we are out of enough cash. Wake up or shut up Linda.

My heart goes out to these people however, our own resources are struggling to cope with its own citizens let alone outsiders ...
I disagree with them being locked up,they should be sent back to where they lived immediately after their application was refused ...

here here, .. everyone that replied here....

if the teacher wants someone to feel sorry for she ought to look closer to home....

put her energies into helping her own community out..

we need more detention centers to cope as obviously we are hard pushed to cope with the sending back phase of the failed asylum seekers...

First off the reason we are such a wealthy nation is that we did go, uninvited, to these peoples countries and pillaged them.
Secondly we are so wealthy we can easily afford to look after our own AND the incomers, easily. The government assertion that we do not have the funds to do both is a bare faced lie, if it were true would they not be taxing the many many very wealthy people who make vast sums here but are domiciled in e.g. Monaco.
The spare periscope for a trident submarine costs >£25,000,000 and does no good whatsoever but I don't hear people moaning on this blog that we should be charitable to our own poor before being charitable to the manufacturers of weaponry.
