Cafe chain plan for St Enoch travel HQ

The A-listed building could soon have a new role if a coffee shop chain moves in

A CITY centre A-listed transport hub could be transformed into a coffee house under new plans.

Subway chiefs in Glasgow want to streamline travel information services by opening one-stop shops in St Enoch Square and Hillhead.

The move will involve Strathclyde Partnership for Transport shutting its travel centre and a Transcard office both housed in a historic Victorian building in St Enoch Square.

SPT will then lease out the building to a retailer such as a coffee chain.

The travel centre and Transcard office move to the existing ticket office in the adjacent St Enoch Subway station.

Officials say the merger will benefit commuters and could be a money spinner, especially since the neighbouring St Enoch shopping centre is getting a £100million extension.

An SPT spokeswoman said: "We anticipate strong interest from a range of big-name catering/coffee and retail companies."

Changes are also planned at Hillhead Subway station where a ticket office and a separate travel centre are to be combined.

The spokeswoman said: "One of our priorities is to enhance our customers' travelling experience.

"As part of that, it made sense to streamline our travel info points to be made available in a single location.

"Rather than three separate offices at St Enoch's and two at Hillhead, we'll have one integrated customer centre at both, offering travel information and ticketing."

Transport chiefs insist there will be no redundancies. Affected staff will be re-trained and redeployed.

The proposal will go before transport chiefs on Friday and if given the go-ahead the project should go ahead this summer, though the costs involved are not yet known.

If it will improve the opening hours, then I'm in favour. It's nothing short of disgraceful that a travel information centre is only open for six days a week, or closes at 5pm just as visitors arrive after travelling all day and need to find their way around.

But mindful of SPT's past record on staffing issues, I'll believe it when I see it.

I Hope whoever takes over the Former info centre is not aloud to Put horrid signs outside.

Sign, sign... maybe they should just put a big sign outside Glasgow's boundaries saying 'For sale: everything must go!'. It's quite clear that under the current local government administration everything in Glasgow is available for commercial exploitation: roundabouts, parks, museums, etc. are all available to anyone with the ready cash.

Why bother with long-term economic planning when you can make a fast buck selling the people's treasured assets to the preferred, sorry highest, bidder?

Sell it to a developer.

Thats usually the quickest way for a grade A listed building to be "burned down by mindless hooligans" thus allowing an easy route to planning stage for even more flats or commercial property!

Or maybe a cafe burning down, will be easier to explain before it is sold to a developer?

No doubt it'll be yet another Starbucks - the chain seem to open another branch every other week in the city centre

I think you could be right, a lease seems more the thing. Why sell the crown jewels ? I presume they will reinvest the money down below for the benefit of the passengers.
A Listed buildings need alot of upkeep so why not let them be used where more people can see them..... I think it's a brave move .

It would be nice if SPT kept their staff up to date with what is happening and where they are all being shuffled off to....instead of keeping them in the dark....

I pray and hope it isn't one of the ever growing and multi- national chains, such as "Costa" and "Starbucks."

Combined, these two American companies are distroying the UK's own industry of coffee providers, and smaller, independant companies.
