THE centrepiece of a £1million art project that helped transform the Gorbals needs major repairs after it was destroyed by vandals.

The Gatekeeper, which links new homes at Malta Terrace and Caledonian Road, became an icon for the regeneration of the area on the South Side when it was unveiled in the Evening Times in 2002.

Now the vast glass photograph that formed one half of the £100,000 landmark will have to be replaced.

The specially-toughened glass could withstand the weight of a man bouncing on it but it is believed a small projectile struck a vulnerable point on the glass, causing cracks to spread across the 17ft by 12ft centre panel.

Water and weather then combined to destroy the work which is now held together with glue, perspex and plywood.

The sculpture is among dozens - some life-size human figures, others tiny work that are only spotted by chance - which were funded by developers Redrow under the "Percent for Art" scheme which contributes part of the overall cost of houses to the environment they share.

Artist Matt Baker, who worked with former business partner Dan Dubowitz to create the work, said: "It's a bit of a shame the work has been damaged.

"It seems that nowadays everyone in the Gorbals is an art critic but fortunately most people have really taken the artworks to their hearts."

The former architect was responsible for the large bronze sculpture of a flying woman, dubbed "The Hingin' Witch" by some locals, which formed the other half of the artwork. The whole installation can be seen from half a mile away on the route north into the city centre.

Repairs were delayed as builders consulted Mr Dubowitz, who now works in Italy after the artists' partnership, the Heisenberg group, split.

Mr Baker has continued to work in Glasgow, including more major works in the Gorbals, and he said that the vast majority of locals enjoyed the art in their community, with most pieces still in mint condition despite fears from sceptics in the project's early days.

He said: "People have really taken to the work and they feel that they own it."

Mr Baker added: "I'm glad to see they're repairing the Gatekeeper. The cost will be met by the building's insurance."

It won't be their fault -it'll be the rest of society (and Glasgow Council) not giving the poor dears enough to do.

whipping's too good for them, bring back national service, I blame the parents, cut off their knackers, etc

**** shame - I'm a big fan pof public art. Did a bit of community work in the gorbals last year, redeveloping community space amongst other things.

Theres a perfect example of parents not doing enough,The Boy that was killed by laying in middle of road,
Now what was a 15 yr old doing out at that time anyway. My heart goes out to his parents,But this is an example of what they really get up to.Parents neeed to take more to do with kids.

Why is anyone surprised about this? Any local gorbals ned will see this has something to brag about. And the fact that £1 million was spent on a piece of art in an area full of deprivation would just antagonise the long term residents. Daft.

Send the vandals out to do charity work in a remote part of Malawi or somewhere similar - a few months with no TV, video games, mollycoddling social workers, sportswear shops or shopping malls to hang about outside should do them the world of good. Given the toughness of day-to-day life, I also doubt the locals would think much of their whining and excuses for their behaviour.

You can take the Ned out of the Gorbals, but not the Gorbals out of the Ned!

I take it the area was covered by hi-tech cctv,so it shouldn't be difficult to identify those responsible.a £100,000 Of damage done I hope this is reflected in any sentence handed out.

you can spend as much money as you want in trying to create a lovely enviroment , these people have evolved over many years to be the anti social dregs of humanity and please keep your p'c comments to yourself or if you feel the need to spout off you go and walk through the gorbals tonight and then come back and say how lovely the young men where when they offered to carry my mobile phone and give me free plastic surgery .

A wekness in the glass? Is this not surely a defect which the manufacturer should be made to fix. Still that's beside the point. There seems to be a mentality of destroy in these schemes. I'm sure some of them appreciate the art but the primordal urge to destory gets the better of them. What causes that? Genes, lack of things to do, upbringing, environment, lack of a positiuve outlook? I'm at a loss to give any solutions to combat pointless vandalism, however the poster above on sedning them to Malawi may have struck on something. Such a trip would broaden their minds and give them perspecytive on life and more importantly their lives. It would also remove them from their petty territorial squabbles. I bet that would give hugely significant results when they returned.

Make the parents pay. Or perhaps bring back a public exhibition by putting the kids in stocks and leaving them for 2 hours. Better still would be to ship the kids out to a hospital or school in Malawi or somewhere like that for 3 months. These people will never appreciate the better things in life. They just want to destroy.

A certain demographic in Glasgow exhibiting mindless behaviour and destroying things meant to brighten up their neighborhood? Never!

Its all they are good for - destroying things and stabbing one another.

sorry this is off topic but--
A TEENAGER who climbed into a ladies toilet cubicle in a nightclub and sexually assaulted a woman has been jailed for 18 months.
Mazhar Naseem, 18, will be supervised for two years after he is released and will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for ten years.
Sheriff Nigel Morrison said: "The offence to which you pled guilty is a serious sexual assault.

"It was committed while you were on probation for an offence with a sexual element.

"I consider I will have to impose a custodial sentence.".....18 months is this a joke he will serve 12 months and this is for sexual attack now you know why the neds dont care about destruction of property they will perhaps get a £30 fine if caught or the way the law works £30 compensation...
Posted by: tam-m, southside on 7:15pm Mon 25 Feb 08
ps--The woman was left screaming and in "a very distressed state" and has been traumatised since the incident, the court was told.
His sentence will be backdated to October when he was taken into custody.

I have said this before, if you steal money then your sentence will always be greater than if you commit an assault on somebody sexual or otherwise..It has always been this way & it is sad..

Call the hanging figure art! It’s embarrassing - a total waste of money - and some of our pensioners are freezing in their own homes.

Vandals usually have a happy knack of deflating the pomposity of municipal mysogeny, a vast sum spent on the decoration whilst the cake is short on ingredients.

The truly intellingent administrations (councillors and officers) realising that this is merely the devil making work for idle hands move to be pro-active and find tasks which provide a good return for the community and at the same time deliver self fulfillment to the idle hands, to take a pride in.

Remember that Grafitti on the wall is a fantastic mural in someone else's eyes and the demolished brick planters are an the unco-ordinated attempt to soften brutal hard landscaping.

I thought the vandals sacked rome not the gorballs but wasnt it the council that sacked the gorballs. They trendified it with impressive buildings and artworks and to an extent it worked in that for those few blocks the place became like a city home outside the city for the reasonably well off. Unfortunately the next scheme over that has not been redone and has nothing even closely resemling artwork to vandalise is full of losers who have never worked a day that they didnt get cash under the counter at the end. Well what are the neds supposed to do but go where the artwork is to vandalise it.
