POLLOK Country Park in the South Side of Glasgow has been named best park in Europe.

It beat off tough competition from parks in Poland, France, Italy, Sweden and Germany to clinch the top prize.

Last year the park - run by Glasgow City Council - was named the best park in Britain and it has now became the first UK park to win the European award.

Land and environment executive spokeswoman Ruth Simpson said: "The Dear Green Place is celebrated for its parks and green spaces and this accolade simply confirms Pollok Country Park is a unique place of natural beauty.

"I would like to pay tribute to all the staff who have helped us win this award."

Pollok is at the centre of controversy as pressure on the council grows to veto plans by adventure firm Go Ape to create a treetop playground.

Councillors are due to consider a planning application in the next couple of weeks but it is believed they've already received hundreds of objections.

Land and environment executive director Robert Booth welcomed news of the award as "fantastic".

He said: "We take great pride in our parks and this award is testament to what we are doing.

"There is a mix of high quality amenities in Pollok including plenty of open space for a walk in the woods, a mountain bike trail, the countryside rangers' centre, the Burrell and Pollok House and hopefully Go Ape."

Pollok was judged against criteria including environment, access, maintenance and community involvement for the Europe's best park award, which is organised by international power products group Briggs & Stratton USA.

Vincent Bowden, director of marketing for Briggs & Stratton Europe, said: "Everything about the park, including its close links with the community and diverse environment made it a worthy winner of the title."

The park, which each year attracts 2million visitors, boasts Pollok House, the ancestral home of the Maxwell family who founded the Forestry Commission and the National Trust for Scotland, as well as the Burrell Museum which showcases a collection of priceless art.

Ian Small, head of UK sales for Briggs and Stratton, said: "The competition is an important opportunity to say a public thank you to the hard working people who keep our public parks in such excellent condition."

Pollok Country Park, which is the home to the council's award-winning herd of Highland cows, extends over 361 acres and opened in 1911.

As someone who uses pollock park on a fairly regular basis, I feel I must highlight that the availability of public conveniences is quite unacceptable. I believe the park is some where in the region of 360 acres. I have yet to come across any toilets outwith the ones close to pollock house, then theres the Burrel, but only if its open, other than that I am unaware of any others. Now not being a rangers supporter that leaves me and the woods out of bounds, if you get my drift. Surely the authoroties can make some arrangements. It is as the votes would suggest a majestic arena for all sorts of activities, but we need more toilets. One last point, would dog walkers, especially those who do it for a living, please not let threatening animals like, rotteillers and staffies off the lead if the dogs do not respond to thier call. As someone who jogs round the park, this is quite offputting when they a rampaging towards you, with a dog handler 100 yards away shouting tyson or what ever the dog is called.

PS, I am a dog owner and an animal lover, but dogs that do not not respond to a command are a nuisance to everyone.

Nice park. The joggers are a menace though.

I am absolutely delighted to hear the good news about Pollok Park's recent award, despite the shameless and cheap 'advertorial' piece in todays Times to publicise Go Ape. Once this 'treetop playground' aberration is imposed on us Park users there will be no chance of Pollok Park retaining it's title. What's next from the Cooncil - an amusement arcade?

Don't give them ideas. How much did Go Ape pay ET for this biased piece of nonsense journalism?

I think an assault course would make it even better! If only there was a company which could offer such a facility!

What bare-faced cheek by our esteemed cooncillor Booth:

He said: "We take great pride in our parks and this award is testament to what we are doing.

"There is a mix of high quality amenities in Pollok including plenty of open space for a walk in the woods, a mountain bike trail, the countryside rangers' centre, the Burrell and Pollok House and hopefully Go Ape."

The park certainly didn't win this accolade because there's a £25-quid-a-pop treetop adventure playground being proposed! SHAME ON YOU COUNCILLOR!

Marty - that is totally typical of Booth and he is NOT a councillor, so we can't even vote him out. He is "Executive Director of Land Services" so (unfortunately for us) he has a job for life.

ET has demoted Mr Booth to Councillor - he won't be happy with the drop in status and power

how do you improve the best in Europe ?
Privatise psrt of it, restrict acces to that part unless you pay £20-£30 to a private company, string wire across tree tops and bring in more cars. Ignore the wishes of the local community and spoil the environment which helped win this award in the first place.

Is Booth mad ?

Ruth Simpson is a disgrace - she does not give a hoot about Pollok Park!! Has the woman got no shame?!

Hawkey
You ask "Is Booth mad?"
No! He just suffers from delusions ... of adequacy!

Best in the UK, best in Europe. Whats the chances of winning either again once this ludicrous tree top adventure play park is installed by Go APe.
Absolutely nil, the park one on its existing merits not by having a noisy and intrusive private development. A development that will ruin the very attributes that have won the park these accolades.
Shame on Glasgow City Council, shame on Councillor Simpson for her bare faced affrontery and shame on Robert Booth

Exactly - This article just goes to show the lengths this "GO Apes" Publicity agent are going to to try and win us round!

What a heap of sh*t! And Whos buying it ? ( apart from the paper!)

Next best thing to do is naturally to boycott the media who print such stories and side with the Politicians who we cannot even vote out of office!

The Robert Booths of this world are utterly contemptible and are not deserving of our tax paying money for their wages / expenses.

Until our papers start to print more of the real reflection of how "WE THE PEOPLE" feel - why should we continue to buy into this crap reporting ?

Incidentally - the "Save Pollok Park!" Campaign had people down at the Burrell Collection to protest when this accolade was given to Pollok Park - a Publicity stunt to win over people, or distract them from "Go Ape" and it's intentions ?

Where do these folk who were displaying their banners appear in this video ?

"Save Pollok Park" ; " Insulting NOT Consulting" the slogans were clear to see at Pollok Parks vigil just a week ago!

Yet - the video footage seems to be less forthcoming with the protesters as much ?

You've lost me here??? What point are you trying to make?
Posted by: People Power, Glasgow on 5:12pm Wed 27 Feb 08

The point I'm trying to make is that nowhere in this Video footage did the balance of the positive spin & the protesters of "Save Pollok Park" appear!

Either they weren't included to begin with, were edited out, or were in the wrong place at the wrong time to get their chance to appear in the background of this footage!

The Council biased footage is just more spin and propaganda drivel which we've heard so many times before!
