Caring pupils learn 3 Rs: Rock ’n’ Roll Record aid

A REAL-life School of Rock' backed by Yoko Ono hopes to score a No1 hit to help raise charity cash.

The Whitelees School of Rock - Scotland's youngest performing rock band, made up of pupils from a Cumbernauld primary - have penned a powerful track to raise awareness about the work of the Fairtrade Foundation.

Pupils wrote to the Japanese artist for permission to perform their version of her late husband John Lennon's Imagine.

The ex-Beatle's widow replied to Whitelees Primary saying she would be happy to have the song used by them.

A CD, Fair Trade is the Answer, was launched to mark the beginning of Fairtrade Fortnight, which ends on March 9, and the song aims to encourage the use of Fairtrade products.

The track will be performed at the Fairtrade Festival in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall this Sunday and pupils have written to several retail giants to ask them to play the CD in their stores.

Whitelees Primary bought a drum kit, guitars and keyboards and saw the children's talent blossom as the School of Rock was formed.

Singer and guitarist, Scott Parker, 11, said: "It's about doing something to help Fairtrade and other people rather than just talking about it."

An EP by the band was snapped up by parents raising £500 for a Malawi fund and it is hoped a CD will be out for Christmas.
