My that's a shame AND a surprise... NOT!
Can you imagine what would have happened if council leader Purcell's failed fantasy of bringing a 'Super Casino' to Glasgow would have happened? Well, the Rotunda and all other four smaller casinos would have shut down and all the profits would have went to the multi-millionaire owners of the one big casino.
Of course, not a problem for Purcell and his cronies as that's New Labour's new mantra: ultimate concentration of wealth, the rich get richer and everyone else can just be forgotten about!

I went for a job interview in there several years ago. To se this, I'm only too glad I didn't get the job (Even if it was only part-time)
I couldn't face being downgraded to working in a bookies, these staff must feel cheated!

Thanks Ian, quick question though: assuming you're not royalty, are you posting on behalf of a group (like a spokesperson), or are you just having problems with your pronouns?

I for one, will have none of it!
As for "Losing the plot" The Evening Times Rag deleted one of my SMALL comments, which was non offensive except if you were a Junkie - Labour's Scottish Pride!
costs, such as the new casino tax and a rise in licence fees
mick, if i'm not mistaken the article read :
I'm certainly not sorry to see it go - one down four to go!
The way in which this habit, addiction call it what you like ultimately funds the treasury coffers - despite the misfortune it brings to so many is disgusting.
What is an enjoyable pleasure to one person, is a compulsive addition to another - and that distinction can easily get more blurred as time goes by.
The exact reason why such places will always be approved by councils, and the government, with the real - underlying, and less glamourous issues ignored :
costs, such as the new casino tax and a rise in licence fees
Shut them all down, and stop this disgusting waste of peoples money!
We live in an ever greedier, more selfish and richer times for certain sectors of society - while the less fortunate, losers ( if you can call them that) are sucked in further - and drained of their income, in trouble with laon sharks, potentially lose their house, and assets - all because the lure of gambling has pulled them in and trapped them!
I bet "Gamblers Anonymous" weren't asked to comment on this story - (no pun intended) LOL ;-)

Sydney Meriwether's comments on Purcell and the council are spot on. It may annoy you that he keeps commenting on their inadequacies, but applaud the guy for doing so.
Glasgow already has plenty of problems without a rise in gambling addiction in the community, which is an inevitable consequence of increasing the number and the size of the casinos in the city. The council's pathetic and stupid welcome to anyone who wants to prey on the weak in our society goes against the principles of the Labour party, in whose name they are elected.

Im disgusted by the comment above, People choose wither they wish to spend their time in a casino just like they choose to go to a club, cinema or restaurant - IT IS THEIR CHOICE!!! The old days of casino image has moved on and its about time that peoples attitude changed also. Visiting a casino is now about the customer experiencing good customer service, good food/drink and atmosphere and enjoying being within a safe enviroment.
The Industry is a growing business and some of the most pleasant, intellegant and passionate people work in this Industry and have made a very successful career in it, so shut them all down you say!!!! These people would all be out of jobs and is that fair?
I would like to point out that the Rotunda has not been closed due to Alea opening but simply due to the rise of gaming tax duty and the Smoking ban. This closure has been in the pipline for the last 12 months. The Rotunda has some of the most loyal staff and have prided themself in working for the club, however due to a bad location it has struggled to get admissions through the door.

It's just the usual bully-boy tactics and we must not put up with it.
If someone doesn't agree with my posts then they are free to ignore them, I will not be offended. Hundreds (if not thousands) of people read the online ET each day and it's always the same very few posters who try to deny others the right to post... maybe if they had the ability to compose respectful, sensible posts then they would stop feeling so [bold]insecure[/bold]!

Even if the other labourite numptys want to slag your posts off, I agree with your 100%!
That Purcell and his cronies need to be pulled down a peg or two! And I'll happily be the one to do it! Wanna join me!
Leave these mabourite numpties to think what they like - this kind of revenue raising for the city is a black mark on it as far as wiping out povery and deprivation goes!
Gambling ultimately leads to addiction, loans, money troubles, debt, and potentially losing ones house & assetts! THATS A FACT!
And you can bet that cushy Purcell in his fancy mansion will not come running to bail out any poor individual who has got caught in the cycle of gambling and its grip!
[bold]"Glas-vegas" - NO BL**DY THANKYOU![/bold] THE YANKS CAN KEEP THEIR CASINOS AND RACKATEERING GAMBLING INDUSTRY ACCROSS THE POND!

Yes on rare ocaasions and Casino's offer a system called a self bar which allows the individual to ban them from all casinos which is recorded on a database and it is very hard for an indiviual to regin access to a casino. If a member wishes to rejoin it then must go through a system of people, including OD's before permission is granted and this is a rare decision that are granted back into a casino.
