For all their fancy words, what these members and officials of Glasgow City Council actually want to do is turn the city centre into a [bold]sterile bubble of privilege[/bold], where their chosen 'elite' can pretend the whole city is basking in the glow of trickle-down economics... they should be ashamed, [italic]but of course they're not[/italic]!

Before Steven Purcell and the other luvvies congratulate themselves on ridding Glasgow of this crime ridden midden could we all consider the following . It was Purcell and his predecessors who allowed this famous , and for some poor folk vital, market to rot into the state it is in today . There always was an agenda for the last twenty years to close this market .All Purcell and his cronies were looking for was the reason . So dont be fooled by our councillors as they are to blame for not managing this problem . Perhaps we could keep the market open and let our M P`S chose their furniture from the stallholders . Lot cheaper than John Lewis . Clean up the market and keep it open . This is Glasgow`s history and should not be replaced by not some ponced up ethnic market ( please no racist accusations it becomes boring ) Incidentally visit the market and you will see immigrants happily buying clothes etc. as prices are cheap .

Same old judgemental, exaggeration-based attack on GCC for anything they try to do. Can't see the positive in anything. Nothing better to do. Forgot to blame Steven Purcell.
Boring......tedious.
....time to change the record.

Paddy's market makes the Barras look positively sophisticated. It takes the form of a cobbled alleyway, packed with [bold]purveyors of finest second-hand tat[/bold]: toys, CDs, clothes, seven Kit-Kats for a pound, that kind of thing.

How do they plan to improve the Barras area? By demolishing it and building a slum? ;-)
Didn't know that about the Barras. Used to go years ago but it's gone downhill since then if we're honest. Never been to Paddy's Market.

I agree with all the rebellious comments here. Paddy's is a part of glasgow's history one way or another. Attempting to get rid of it is like a cultural version of [bold]Ethnic Cleansing[/bold] . Its because of the politicans intertia that Paddy's continues to provide cheap things to people at the lower end of the social bracket ,and taking away this right borders on Nazi. Although i dont have need to go to Paddy's i still would like the right to do so if needs be. Anytime i have gone to Paddys th traders have been friendly decent people who jave provided a valuable service to the poorer commuinites of Glasgow. The beauty of Paddys is that you never know whta you are going to find, and to me thats its beauty. If we go by the councils argument if i see criminality at a football stadium can i ask he council to close the football stadium? No. Paddy's should be defended from any makeover. Paddys is beautiful in its own special way. Only Glaswegians will understand this.

I agree with Scott, same old boring negative rubbish on these comment pages.
If people cant see that the council are trying to get rid of the scum that ruin paddys market and make into a place where people can sell thier stuff in a safe and pleasant environment, then what exactly do you want for Glasgow? A dodgy, unsafe, unclean, drug invested, crime ridden city? Some people from here actually want to to enjoy Glasgow's culture and want to get rid of Paddy's Market as it is and make it better so that all in Glasgow can enjoy it.

Back to topic. Paddy's market is a bit of a dive but ordinary Glaswegians are being ostracised by this administration as a part of their "gentrification" of the city. You can't have Paddy's Market sitting beside £250K penthouses, can you.
BTW, knowing that GCC are avid fans of ET, perhaps they should read the story about private landlords not paying factors fees. That's what happens when you build flats that are overpriced and the local population cannot afford to buy.

Glasgow 'good old days' nostalgists: catch a grip, will you.
I am old enough to remember when the Barras was a friendly place welcoming to all. Even then (I mean the 1970s and early 80s), Paddy's market was a bit dodgy.
Now, the Barras is your destination of choice for smuggled fags, pirate DVDs and illicit software. All together now, sing the Barras anthem: "[italic]Cheap fags, cheap fags[/italic] "...It can get pretty frightening if you start asking questions.
Paddy's market is simply beyond desperate, and anyone wanting to "save it" wants to take the Oscar Marzoroli photos out of their specs and the cotton wool out of their nostrils. Be serious.
For providing clothes for the stoney broke, Asda, Primark and Lidl do a good job, or if you can't afford those prices there are plenty of charity shops.

Paddy's is a complete and utter shoitehole. Half the bangers on here seeking to preserve it as some sort of proletarian twos-up to the bourgeoise are insulting the very people in who's name they claim to speak. I'll bet FEW have ever been anywhere near it and NONE will have any idea how grim a place it is day-to-day. I'm five generations of Glasgow born and bred, with deep family ties to the Scottish Communist Party formed as result of the Unholy First World War. I know this City like a luver as the origianl Taggart theme used to say...and Paddy's represents NOTHING I want to see preserved about a poverty ridden past. It ain't a monument to struggle - it is poverty by it's very nature.
Still relocating it to the front of the City Chambers might not be a bad idea; Stephen and his chums can buy all the gifts they need for visiting dignitaries without having to leave the Square, which I don't think they do that often.

I do not come from Glasgow but I frequently visit and while there usually take in Paddys.
This is something I have been doing getting on for 50 years and I must say there has been steady deterioration in the market over the years. The area was gradually eroded until it's present form. I must say I no longer find it a place worth visiting as the 'character' seems to be gone. The place now is frequented daily by loudmouthed yobs most under the influence of who knows what plus the frequent raids by HM. Customs and Police which I find quite alarming.
I think the erection of the High Court extension was the nail in the coffin for Paddy's. I dont think their Lordships liked the view from their back windows. Plus of course it is prime site land. On the other hand I think we have seen enough of GCC's attempts to upmarket other areas.

What are you talking about. Where are they?
Glasgow is, on the whole, a pretty scary place to be. The city centre on a Friday/Saturday night is full of drunken jobs (both professional and unprofessional!) Making a pub a cafe/bar is not going to get rid of the drunken mess that ends up on the pavement every night. So if they are going to shut down Paddy's Market, why don't they shut down all those dodgy pubs they keep giving licences to as well.

What about the barras, there is more fake DVD's and C.D.'s on sale there than Paddy's. More illegal cigarettes and tobacco and plenty of drugs. It is on a greater scale than Paddy's Sh****le. So I hope that dump and crime infested midden called the barras is next.

Do you need to be brain of Britain to realize that they are trying to create an illusion by closing the likes of this market.
They are hiding from the world the poverty that exists in Glasgow. It IS ethnic cleansing insofar as they don't want the poor in the town centre.
However, I have went through the lane several times. I don't grasp how some of them can be making money out of they are supposedly selling. I did ask myself - what are they REALLY selling.
BUT if they close the market where will they move to - to sell the drugs and so on?
How many doss houses are near the paddys market? And near the Sheriff Court?

Well thats the future of paddys market it gets closed & redeveloped, by the councillors who give the land with planning permission to their favourite building contractor who is also a big labour supporter, cause there are too many druggies there. Right OK when are they going to close all the other parts of glasgow I could name a few all over the place that are rat infested drug holes like milton close to possil park sounds lovely till you see the folk hanging around and would never make a tourist attraction.

considering the druggies who infest the market come from the hostel round the corner why is the market being blamed.
are we to take it this clean up to improve the area also means the closure of the hostel.
another case of developers pulling the strings of gcc decision making.
this new multi cultural market with all the artists will not have any druggies.or is it just a better class of druggies which will use the market in future.

During late 1940's into early 1950's it was a blessing for our family to have Paddy's Market. At that time there were police raids but it didn't keep us from getting a good pair of wellies, we learned to run just as you did when the police came for the illegal bookie in the street. As for the Barras as that time most of the sellers were from England and always gave you a good deal for your money. They are happy memories for me.

Keep things in perspective, chaps. I know nothing about Paddys market, as u call it,
but it seems from what I can gather that it's hardly Moore Street ... but then Glasgow is just a football town while Dublin is the real world capital! Only joking, of course, but don't take yourself too seriously!
If you close down Paddys (does that warrant an aprostrophe?), any chance of Celtic moving to Croke Park ... it's Europe's third biggerst stadium?

"It could be a good venue for young aspiring artists to take up space to sell their wares, with a cultural element of people from dif- ferent ethnic backgrounds."
In other words, Glaswegians can forget about trading there. More room for the Poles, Romanians etc not to mention Pakistanis, Indians, Iraqis and Iranians.
The REALLY thing is, in the 21st Century, there is STILL a need for 2nd hand goods!!!!!!!!!
I trade at Blochairn every Sunday, and make a decent living selling mainly 2nd hand electrical goods (ALL of which are thoroughly tested!!!).
The drug dealers should just be shot out of hand where they are caught.
As for the DVD and designer gear dealers, why dont the powers that be set a MAXIMUM price for DVDs, one for denims/jackets/dress
es/handbags etc????? Or the makers of these over-priced garbage lower the prices???
Lets be honest, they are mainly made in Tiawan, China, Cambodia etc with child slave labour and are very rarely any better quality than Tescos/Asda etc own label goods.
I have always said that people need protecting mainly from THEMSELVES!!!!
We live in a culture where people tell you what to wear, where to go, how to decorate your house, how to do your garden etc etc etc. The list is almost endless.
THINK FOR YOURSELVES PEOPLE!!!!!!!
£300 ARMANI`S OR £4 TESCOS .......... ITS REALLY A NO BRAINER!!!

Writing as someone whom would love a space to practice and develop an artisan form. The sheer cost gives a stone wall guarantee of that never arising. For those that claim places exist. I reply, they are fake, proven. The person(s) who think that Paddys Market is currently distant from Camden, should visit the quash and poverty that is Camden. Good luck to the new, it is with no doubt required.

you know what the council is really up to - the regeneration of the East end pre - 2014!
Paddies Market - The Barras are not worth the effort to clean up, and sort out - so lets close it down!
Easy option, and hey - how long will it be before the land goes on the market for flats for sale at a bl**dy fortune ?
These councillors are scheming buggers - however bad the market is - was maybe the councillors only want to highlight their spin, propaganda and positive news stories - and if the market makes them look bad - easy option - close it down!

Paddys kept more than a few families from being totally destitute in the "good old days" an as many have said on here thise days are gone. I wonder if they really have or is it the illusion of Glasgow being prosperous that our glorious leaders want. There are still pockets in Glasgow where poverty is rife.
Blochairn is the bees knees as far as Im concerned. The Barras is played out and yeah right on prime land give it a couple of more years and the city fathers will slap a condemned notice on it citing illegal dvds cds and ciggies as the reason. If these are reasons why arent they tackling those instead of the markets. Glasgows not the dear green place anymore as whenever a bit of green is seen they slap expensive housing up that most glaswegians will only ever walk past (maybe even on the way to paddys even)

Inspired by this blog I took a walk through Paddy's on Friday. Teeming with junkies, not surprising given the methodist doss house next door (i've worked with homeless people who'd rather walk the street than take a bed in there - hmm, maybe that's the real problem). An awful lot of the rose tinted view here. You'd still keep your hand firmly on your wallet.

The problem of homelessness and junkies is nothing new for parts of Glasgow - however, the way in which the council choose to address the issue is something else!
Try making some of the Councillors swap places with the homeless folk of our city ( whatever their reasons!) and watch them squirm!
Maybe its a case of brushing the problem under the carpet, and not addressing the real problems that the Barras / Paddys Market have ended up with.
I'd like to know the stance the Police take with the issue too: -
Is it too much for them to have their plain clothed officers reguarly catching out the dodgy traders, wheelers and dealers ?
Whatever the reason for this decision, you can bet its not for the benefit of the less well off, and those in the trap of homelessness, drug addictions, or the revolving door of crime!
Poor show Glasgow city council!

Exactly - the problem with todays up and coming generations is they see all the value in material goods & far less in the immaterial.
The things that money cannot pay for mean so much more in life: good health, inner security, self esteem, peace of mind, and feeling able to get by without the need for financial gratification.
People are more prepared to sacrifice their imagination, creativity and inner feelings for the immediate buzz they get from spending money.
However the recession looming in America, cautious investments in shares & stock market, and potential downturn in the high street is something to take seriously.
Even more reason for people to: [italic]"Think Globally, and Act Locally!"[/italic]

Whatever the present run-down and unsavoury state of the market, I am surprised that no-one has commented on the excellent recycling service performed by the traders there, the vast majority of whom are, in my experience, pleasant and decent folk. This recycling is a useful and environmentally friendly service for poorer folk that should be encouraged by the dunderheads in GCC, not replaced by some useless, unwanted arty-farty nonsense.
The application of a wee bit of imagination, money and policing by the council could make this area a relevant, attractive and useful corner of Glasgow, not the neglected midden it sadly is at the moment.

[quote] dunderheads in GCC[/quote]
Haven't heard that one in a while! LOL ;-)
How many derogatory words can we use to slate GCC - seems that the only person who has a good word to say about them is our loyal Frank!
God bless his cotton socks!
Velocetteman,
Love your use of the term,
dunderheads in GCC

[/quote] Velocetteman is so right. Does anyone know any actual amounts of textiles known to pass through the market? Must be really substantial. This would be an undeniable argument to help keep the place open.
Dont lump all GCC together. Not all the same by any means. Some are trying hard to do the right thing here.

Glasgow City Councillors are committing an act of Racism ...by discriminating against the honest stallholders of PADDYS Market ... The councillors have stated that they want to REPLACE current stallholder with traders selling other ETHNIC wares .....are the people of IRISH decent not ETHNIC enough
ADOLF HITLER adopted this form of eradication ...The council are committing a gross act of RACISM and ETHNIC cleansing .....
Let it be noted that ..... I Mister Glasgow , have been investigating the council members who are instrumental in the Paddys Market cleansing ... and have been enlightened to the theory that the councilors concerned may be secretly gay or undeclared to the public 'Gay' ..... why not declare ? .... Steven Purcell eventually declared.... but what of some of his newly appointed members of the Council executive committee ?[bold]bold[/bold] ..... Is there a 'Secret Gay Mafia' lurking in our cities council . Any group who show favouritism to each other above other people is not in the best public interest .be it Nazis or or any group who close ranks in order to strengthen there own ...
Investigations are continuing
