120 homes to be built on Clyde site in £27m move

by Jonathan Paisley

DEVELOPERS have unveiled multi-million plans to build more than 120 homes and offices on the banks of the Clyde.

The £27million proposal marks the final phase of Renfrew Riverside, a housing, leisure and retail development, which joins Braehead with Renfrew town centre.

Primrose Quay and Junction 26 will be created on either side of Ferry Village, a site earmarked for 2000 new houses, off the M8.

Glasgow-based developer Park Lane said the latest phase will complete one of Scotland's most significant waterfront regeneration developments.

Sean Robinson, joint managing director of Park Lane, said: "Junction 26 and Primrose Quay can be seen as the final pieces in the jigsaw for the comprehensive regeneration of Renfrew Riverside.

"It has been a pleasure to achieve the complete transformation of Renfrew's waterfront, reinventing the relationship between the town and the River Clyde."

Five housebuilders will create the £245m Ferry Village over the next four years.

Bett, George Wimpey, Miller, Sovereign House and Strathclyde Homes are building a mixture of flats and family homes on the 105-acre site, opposite Braehead Shopping Centre.

The plan to transform the area around Braehead into an exciting place to work, live and socialise has created around 1000 construction jobs.

It is hoped a further 4000 jobs will be created as firms move into new business parks around the area.

More than £15m has been invested in new infrastructure, creating new roads, parks and walkways, around the site.

The problem has been that the way in which the regeneration of the river has been done in all the wrong order.

Harbourside flats built - with no link up to the local ameneties till months, if not a year after their investment & habiting.

Architectural eyesores / "Glass houses" - The BBC & STV studio's built along the Clyde with the problems of the windows taking the brunt of the weather. ( like the Buchanan Street idea - keeping the glass clean is a logistic nightmare!)

And bridges built accross the Clyde ( Bells Bridge & additional bridge accross from the "Crown Plaza" ( formerly the Moat House!) Hotel. The implications being the difficulties of dredging the Clyde to allow for various boats to sale further in to the city.

The City Council, and those who make the final decisions never seem to think about the short term pain, for long term gain scenrario!
As if it did - maybe we'd see a more joined up approach, better investment in all areas, and more forethought into the problems that could arise!

Where are the new Cycle lanes & boat trips - cafe bars and restuarants ?

Why have so many residents - and no ameneties to go with all these new houses?

Well you certainly can't accuse Ferry Village of being cut off from local amenities, with Braehead shopping centre directly across the road, That big X-Scape eyesore and an Odeon multiplex. Not to mention the retail park with Ikea etc along the road a bit.

Why all that's missing are the 'Stepford Wives' free to every purchaser...

Sounds nice but the traffic is already horrendous abound Braehead. Residents will need car or hovercraft ferries if they want to get out of their houses.

Never mind a hovercraft - how about a bus link on the Renfrew side of the ferry? It's quite a walk to Renfrew town centre in the pi**ing rain!!

Buffalo Bill - I doubt very much whether hovercrafts will be street legal in either Ferry village, Braehead, Renfrew - even if they could blow the streets clean.
