Paddy’s will be closed by autumn

CRIME-RIDDEN Paddy's Market will be closed down by this autumn.

Glasgow councillors today gave the green light to plans that will see the area transformed into an upmarket centre for arts and crafts shops and foreign food stalls. They agreed to take over the lease of the rundown railway arches from Network Rail.

Traders who operate at the market just now will not have their leases renewed when they expire, as revealed by the Evening Times last week.

Most will be out by May, but it will be autumn before the final lease is up and the market is cleared.

Builders will then move in and carry out a comprehensive facelift of the area which has been a base for traders for almost 200 years.

The move follows complaints about the level of crime reported in and around the Shipbank Lane premises.

Last year the cost of dealing with problems at Paddy's soared to £277,000.

Steve Inch, the city council's executive director of development and regeneration, said: "The area has become the subject of escalating levels of criminality including drugs offences, acts of serious disorder, the sale of stolen property, the sale of counterfeit material and the sale of contraband alcohol and cigarettes.

"Criminal activity and anti-social behaviour related to the Paddy's Market area is considered by the police and Glasgow Community Safety Services to have an extremely detrimental impact on surrounding residential areas.

"All of these issues increase the difficulty of turning round this area and threaten to undermine the investment the council is making in the Merchant City."

Yes JIm,

"All of these issues increase the difficulty of turning round this area and threaten to undermine the investment the council is making in the Merchant City."

It seems according to Steve Inch that the area is growing, so soon even names like The Calton maybe associated with soup kitchens and people with no shoes as I tried to explain last week but too many nobs were at the wind up to take it seriuosly - Central Glasgow is being gutted big time, the Barras, The Old Ship Bank and the Gallowgate - it will be removed and replced with Yuppieland - can't think for what reason why Purcell wants it to stay, he hates commoners with a passion and wants rid of the squalor as he sees it - its obvious with the above statement, once the problems move on to the Barras, that area will be bulldozed, then where do they go? Bridgeton - Parkhead? Some lane off the High Street only for these area to be bulldozed as well?

They're not interested in solving the pronblems, only want to move people and their problems elsewhere but at the same time, ridding the city and its old fashioned environs for other people bar Glasgow people, if there is such a thing left?????? Or do they not count because most of this common scum (according to Purcell) do not fit in with the cosmo glamour that he is trying to create?

Is Glasgow City Council blaming the good people of Possilpark for crime at Paddy's Market, and subsequently, selling their assets in an unprecedented civil recovery scheme?

I want answers...

'Eric' you get more wacky by the day. There's no more people spewing up the top end of Sauchiehall Street than are falling out of Dels, the Polo or Bennets!

Where did the nonsensical figure of £277,000 come from? This is a very bad day for Glasgow council and glasgow in general. Snuffing out over 200 years of history so the "Service Apartment" scum from the Candleriggs can walk about without fear. All this will do is misplace the traders and the rest to another area and the council will start this all over again. This is historical revisionism that neo nazis would be proud off. Glasgow council no longer represnts the people of Glasgow. It has become the enemy of Glasgow.

Another bit of Glasgow gone. Paddys Market is an unique slice of Glasgow Culture. I have been visiting Glasgow for just over twenty years and each time I visit, I always go to Paddys.

I have had bargains and the atmosphere there is the real Glasgow.

The new market will be a white elephant. Nobody who trades at Paddys would be able to afford a unit.

Councillors are out of touch with the people.

Meep, my good man/woman, don't let these numpties get you down, there are powerful forces moving behind the scenes on this one, let me explain:

The closure of Paddy's Market has nothing to do with crime and not even the image of our city, it is simply a pointless, petty gesture by Glasgow City Council to flex its muscles with Network Rail. GCC have been pressurising NR for years to fund urgent bridge replacements in Glasgow (result of years of GCC neglect), the repairs are now critical with the forthcoming Diddy Games 2014.

NR has now basically said that GCC can get-tae, subsequently GCC thought they could force NR paying by making an example of Paddy's Market, and using it as a warning of how GCC could take over other prime NR properties.

However... and it's a huge H_O_W_E_V_E_R, in has now stepped the European Union, because of the 301 bridges that carry roads in this city, 251 have been structurally assessed by Audit Scotland to check whether they meet strict European standards for load carrying capacity. Of those bridges checked, 69 failed to meet the standard, and now pose very serious problems for Glasgow's roads network.

Now, under the EU legislation GCC has the responsibility of meeting the EU standards of being able to carry 44 tonnes, while NR only has to ensure they can carry 17 tonnes.

This issue is going to bring down (maybe literally) Glasgow City Council and could very conceivably, allegedly, force the abandonment of the 2014 Diddy Games... so Meep, just role up your sleeves, sit back, and watch the forthcoming bonfire of the vanities at City Chambers... it should be FUN!

Usual deluded nonsense. The closure of the marekt is everything to do with crime & squalor. Just watch the daily trail of residents from Hope House & St enoch's hotel into the market, leaving with a copper attached to each arm and a drugs charge made against them. Its a boil on glasgows backside that needs to be lanced. Supposing the council merely closed it down and didn't open an upmarket market, that would be better than what we have now. ( Railway bridges indeed!) Have a read at the council minutes and you'll see the truth.

If crime is the big issue than it would have been far preferable to keep the market as it is because the authorities have a tight reign on it at present with undercover customs and police as well as video recordings of the goings on. When it is closed the crime will be scattered throughout the city where it will spawn further criminal networks which will be much harder to police.

As a boy it was a treat to visit the market, the patter, the sincerety and frienliness that was part of it.

On several trips home I visited Paddies and was dissapointed with what I saw there, but nevertheless it still had "Character, and the Characters"

Yes I think it is in the way of the councils grand plans, but at what cost, look at the suburbs on the outskirts of the city, are they any better, I dont think so.

The answer, get someone else in to run the city, the choice is yours, VOTE THEM OUT.

But be careful that you dont get fooled by other hig flying Numpties (I like that word)

Remember the Fishmarket was upgraded and then scrapped, not enough touristy stuff I believe, or too far from the central city to walk, now the Paddies.

Let Glasgow be for Glaswegians, no Forieners to run your (my) city.

I know I am at the other end of the world, but I still love "MY CITY"

Clean out the inhabitants of red square.

Alex. Cameron.
