I have a relative who lives down the Greenacres area at the Nitshill road corridor and he tells me it always the kids from Arden & Carnwadric who going out of their way to cause this bother. Arden was never that bad in the 60's and early and 70's. It only started when glasgow was awash in heroin in the early 90's ( and still is) Glen Oaks housing should evict any family whose kid has been caught up in this.

Thank goodness so many people sees the need to understand and sympathise with these young folks, whose main problem is cleary the lack of facilities.
Yes, what they need is facilities, It's actually the taxpayer's fault, when you think about it. If only we had given nore money to pay for facilities in the past for these young people, there wouldn't be a problem. Perhaps a special financial programme could be paid for by taxpayers for special facilities. I note that the city council is now working with Glen Oaks, police, Glasgow Community Safety Services and Culture and Sport Glasgow to help provide a Chill-Out youth centre in a bigger venue, while a number of diversionary tactics, such as a portable football pitch being brought to the area, are being tried to help encourage positive behaviour. That will certainly help.
And someone needs to adress the lack of free alcohol that is clearly opressing them too. They wouldn't be threatening peole if there were special youth work facilities that could provide them weith Buckfast.
And the parents. These hard working parents from Arden and Carnwadric. Words cannot express my admiration for them. They probably had to go without facilities when they were young too, which is why their children now face such challenges.
Whatever happens hope that nobody is so old-fashioned as to suggest harsh, repressive tactics such as arrest, proosecution, punishment, detention, and the reactionary notion of not rewarding criminality.

They should be thrown into boot camps,their names should be publicised locally and their parents (if they have any)should be threatened with eviction.Let's forget the 'the poor wee souls have nothing to do' brigade. We had a lot less than they will ever have but if we caused a fraction of the mayhem these brats do, we soon knew about it. Their brains(!) are addled with computer games abd buckfast.

The Armstrong case is the perfect example of why judges need to face "oversight" of their judgements and election to their positions of priviledge.

Stephen Armstrong was badly advised. He should have pleaded not guilty on the grounds of self defence, and a sympathetic jury might just have acquitted him. As for his car being a lethal weapon, let's not forget that it was his ONLY weapon. Even the late great Bruce Lee once admitted that no man can use bare fists against blades.

The people of arden and surrounding areas should not be condemning these youngsters who are just getting up to a bit of high spirited mischief,instead of criticising them why dont the adults meet up with them at 4pm at the confrontation point and hand them out bibles,inform them of local churches mass times etc and generally spread the word of the lord.This solution will work and all involved especially the youngsters will benefit greatly,all it takes is some bibles and faith ,god be with you

The other day I read about a 15 year old girl who stabbed another 5 times, this is after another time when she assaulted another 15 year old girl. Punishment, nil, nothing. Stabbed someone, punctured her lung, no punishment. The judge saw fit that no punishment could suit her crime.
I'll tell yous all something for nothing, if a daft we lassie stabbed my 15 year old daughter and I knew who she was, I go down to her house and slaughter the whole lot of them, her and her parents where they lay. Its the only thing left to do, take the law into your own hands and pulverize the whole shabby lot of them. Its only when law abiding citizens rise up and be counted that the law will react to curb these animals.

Everyone dances round this problem but the source is bad parents. Until we all agree this, it's a waste of time. And for everyone who says the old cliche [bold]'there's nothing for them to do'[/bold] - what a load of crap. I grew up in Mount Florida in the 1970s. There wasn't that much to do then ... BB, Scouts that sort of thing - certainly not the organised sports and music like today. Most of my sport was with school or the BB. For the rest of the time we amused oursleves but our parents always knew what was going on. Now [italic]I'm[/italic] a parent, admittedly not in Glasgow, but in Bristol which has its share of social ills. And there is no end of stuff for my 10-year-old to do. I spend most of my life as a taxi driver. He does several sports, music, drumming, drama, Scouts and on and on ... we could probably fill every waking hour when he's not at school with activities, most of them little or no cost (£2 a week for cricket, £4 a week for drama, £3 a week for Scouts etc etc) No one tell me that the price of a pint can't be afforded.

Therefore, harsh though it may be to those that think otherwise, the youths cannot be prosecuted for neither violence, aggression nor GBH. So, allow the dissaffected youth to take up arms, and cut each other to bits. then, they will destroy themselves. Problem solved. All that is required for evil to succeed, is for good people to do nothing, and nothing is exactly what they should do.

the youths of today lack imagination and demand this demand that, my kids were brought up in arden and in those days not a bit of graffitti, one of my sons was outside playing at football and had an argument with a boy,then he started swearing,i was so mad at him then an old pensioner gave him a kick in the pants,,.i yelled at the oldtimer"give him a good one from me" (which he did!) then he never got taken to the pictures that night and sent to bed early, but now the mothers would have charged that person and would be telling everybody"naebodys goany hit ma boay"...oh the good old days! bring them back again, because the thing nowadays is the parents dont really want the responibility, as the other readers say ....tonys letter and also latino and stella, ...if all els fails holy willie could start up a bible class ( i doubt these families know what a church or chapel looks like inside,) now if mr armstrong phoned there and then for the police that he was threatened by a knife weilder and being threatened the shoe would be on the other foot.

The political agenda that removes constant police presence in areas that if left alone will deteriorate into a war zone is doing enormous harm.This allows all those involved in the legal system of Scotland to justify their HIGHLY PAID JOBS.When the causes could be avoided by attention to the minor irritations that lead to all out gang warfare.

Get real these poor urchins who completely lack parental control and any concept of societal responsibility have to frighten or intimidate or even attack people to keep themselves amused.
Some argue that they should be joining clubs or even paying for constructive pastimes, i say nonsense they need their money for fags, booze and drugs. So get real people, buy toughened glass for your windows, security doors and stay in till they have crashed out, at least they don't get up to about dinner time so it allows you time to get to your work, what more do you want in Nu labour (tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime) Britain.

I have came from arden all my days,and iam afraid iam gutted at the way it has gone downhill,especially over the last 5 to 10 years.I beleive all the trouble started ,when for some strange reason,Scottish Homes offered tenants,who were living and working in the scheme for a minimum of 3 years, ten thousand pounds each towards a mortgage,as long as they vacated Arden.Remember this was people who took pride in were they lived,spent money in the shops and pub and generally gave Arden the good name it had at the time.So inevitably they moved ,which in turn left Arden with empty properties which had to be filled,but sadly not with the same type of people.Not all bad ,but most were.Why was this done.(CRAZY). Getting back to the problem of solving ,the fighting on buses and in the fields between Arden and Darnley.I have visited Glen Oaks recently with the idea of going back to the old routine of a terminus at the top of Arden and at the bottom of the scheme,at carnwadric road.This would then keep the buses out of the scheme completely.This would also be welcome with the new school soon in operation.No doubt some will say what about disabled people and also the elderly.But we had people with those unfortunate problems then.The police should also close the bridge between the Arden park and Darnley,over the motorway,cutting of just about all means of the gangs getting to each other.The police could then control any movement of any youths easier between the two areas.Then maybe we could build an new facility for the kids.They would then become interested,because then there really would be nothing for them to do.

I would like to talk about knife crime. Although not specifically mentioned in this report, it is a huge blight on our society.
Why dont the authorities & courts make it a mandatory 10 year jail sentence if you are caught in posession of a knife ?
With no early release, 10 years full stop.
Some people might say we dont have enough jails for that, but im sure after a month or so of it beginning & yobs seeing their mates banged up for 10 years it would stop pronto.
It would show the thugs that the Government mean business & the good people will stand for no more death & violence on our streets.

The maximum setence for this crime is 4 years, but most people will only serve a few months.
That is why it is not having an effect on the amount of knife carriers. No real detterent.

there should be a lottery to the death penalty and if you are in jail for murder and your name comes up while in jail then it would keep the jails less crowded and the people will at least know something is definately being done.i for one object keeping these trouble makers alive what a waste of taxpayers money.

As someone who grew up in Arden in a single parent household I am bored listening to politicians and academics who blame deprivation for the lawlessness which blights this and other communities. My family had nothing but my mother worked hard and I did not feel the need to throw bricks at buses. The connection between deprivation/poverty and crime is defunct but remains fashionable. Punish the parents who passively encourage anti-social behaviour and build more young offenders institutions. Finally, [bold]dont blame the police[/bold] , their hands are tied because when they do lock up deliquents they get lambasted.

My family had nothing but my mother worked hard and I did not feel the need to throw bricks at buses. The connection between deprivation/poverty and crime is defunct but remains fashionable. Punish the parents who passively encourage anti-social behaviour and build more young offenders institutions. Finally,
dont blame the police , their hands are tied because when they do lock up deliquents they get lambasted.

I think that most of the comments here have hit the nail on the head.
The apology that passes for police & courts isn't going to change.
All they want are neat, tidy figures to show how tough (HAHA) they are on crime.
And still people of all ages, creeds, colours and nationalities are anxious/frightened to leave their homes during the day & night.
Here is my reality... I have been on the receiving end of several verbal & physical assaults, two of which lead to hospitalisation due to my injuries.
They have worsened my already poor health, cost me education and employment opportunities and affected me so badly that I haven't been out at night for almost five years; I rarely go out during the day by myself.
I was so depressed I attempted suicide twice and was successful once, but I was revived by the quick actions of paramedics. I thanked them for their efforts, but I'm not sure if it benefited me.
As a result I have been 'exorcised' by so called friends, and to some extent family.
Who am I? A 44 year old Irishman, former Submariner RN, disabled in an RTA 12 years ago; the disabilities I suffered are mental & physical, which means that I am unable to defend myself against physical assaults and unable to respond to verbal assaults.
Since my disablement I have a conviction for assault with a £500 fine as my 'punishment', with the sheriff adding 'If your kind choose to live in Scotland, you will obey our laws'. Two other court appearances for assault resulted in not guilty verdicts. My so called 'victims' had no physical injuries whatsoever and their so called 'witnesses' were always family, friends, workmates or police officers.
Where did my 'horror' story occur?, Largs - a failing west-coast seaside town, occupied by a large number of bullying, cowardly, racist, sectarian... anything I call them would be an insult to those of the same name.
I asked for help from politicians (pointless - one was more interested in which part of Belfast I come from... wonder why?), I made complaints to HMIC (really pointless), and I wrote to local and national newspapers... my correspondence has never been used.
The end result of these verbal & physical racist assaults & treatment will be the return to the country of my birth, where growing up felt safer in the 1970's and 1980's than it does in 21st century Scotland.
The worst of this is that there will be no change, because there are not enough people with the bravery to stand up to the political/judicial bullying, cowardly, lying, racist, sectarian apology for human (?) beings, as I have found to my detriment.

gwb, do not take it personally, the yobs are not particular who they pick on or why they pick on, if you are elderly, crippled or vulnerable in any way you are easy prey, and as for the creeps who terrify people at their own doorstep, that is par for the course......real 'heroes',did you know there is a very small book entitled 'the book on yob heroes,' it has only 2 pages and they are blank!if you report hooliganism to any authoritive figure the answer you will no doubt get is," here is a couple of pennies now go phone someone who really cares"!if you give the eejits a doing , be sure and do it miles away from anybody, then ask a freind to pick them up(he owns a funeral business which does cremations).

I think its down to the parents.In my case i installed good values from the day they opened there eyes,i know where they are at all times because i ask for names and numbers and we made a point of meeting there friends and we spend time with them as afamilay.Dont get me wrong they are not angels,but they are not getting upto stuff like this.For the record my kids were both born in Glasgow and we moved to canada to get away from all this stuff.

In the 1960 Rotherham use to be the best town, there was nothing to do for the teenagers, but we girls, made it good for us, the only thing there was was the Regent and a movie house, alas both of them are now gone, the Regent was a live show with Pantomime at Christmas time, also a realy good selection of pictures were put on every week,at the picture house, I have even been known to stand in a queue to see the picture, we worked and went to the pictures, we walked home, in the dark, just two girl teenages and no one bothered us, I bought a car and we went into the country side, all this was great, what on earth are they doing now, (they are bored?) how on earth can they become bored when they have so much to keep them occupied, what about the Technical colleges, I learned to become a draughtsman there, we were happy, left everyone alone, everybody got on with their own life.
There is a problem nowadays if mother attempts to correct the little "monsters" the parents are thrown into jail, because they are "abusing the child".
I do believe in the Charles Bronson way of getting rid of the hooligans though, here, here for vigilantes

have i got news for you readers... a thug got charged with assault and got 28 months! i can hardly believe it! the judge actually had the adaucity to charge this thug! i nearly had a corony when i read this! what is the world coming to?surely this was a misprint? its only the victims who get punished... somebody check this judges credentials has nobody told them that THE VICTIMS LOSE AND THE THUGS GO FREE...makes you wonder if half these judges are qualified to sit on the bench....have a clear out with the whole criminal system and hire people with a bit of common sense

Where do you find your sources for these comments in the paper? Do these people ever even look out of their doors? Do you just walk up to a door and ask some random old person what they think? Perhaps if you were to ask someone who actually goes outside and spends time working and living in the community about what is happening, you might get a more honest picture of what is happening!
But then that wouldn't be very exciting news would it?
I live and work in Arden and I can tell you the people in this article have no idea what they are talking about. The recent troubles with the school kids etc at home time is exactlyt that-recent- plus it happens between 3.30 and 4.30. The idea that its kids from Arden attacking innocent victims on the bus is ridiculous- there are ohter kids from Arden and surrounding areas on the bus who are taunting the ones on the outside. One of the windows was smashed from the inside not the outside.
The troubles with gang fighting in the area have been going on since the scheme was built in the 1950's- it's the same old story as when you older boys were fighting with your lockbacks and swichblades back then. The only reason it's seen as different or worse now is because it's being given such bad publicity in the papers.
The fighting is between Darnley, Arden, Priesthill and others, it takes place on a bridge over 500 yards away from any homes- I know because my house is the nearest to it. Yes it is a little scary, but that's life, teenagers will be teenagers and no bible or lethal injection will ever change that.
And as for the police, it would perhaps interest the person speaking in the article to know that the police have been dealing with this problem constantly and in a consistent mannerfor quite some time- not the last few days. The Community Police and Pollok Police have been working closely with the local Housing Association and the new youth centre in Arden to combat this problem and the same thing has been done in Darnley and Priesthill with as much success as can be expected. These men and women have been working every hour God sends to make our areas safwer for us and our kids and I feel its an insult to them to tell Glasgow anything else.
Does it make a bit more sense now people?
