MP Harris hits back in postal row

by Brian Currie

GLASGOW South MP Tom Harris has hit back after being branded hypocritical for supporting Government plans to close post offices.

Mr Harris and other city Labour MPs who had complained about the Royal Mail's cost-cutting plans were slammed for failing to back Opposition MPs who want the closures postponed.

Today Mr Harris said opposition politicians would be hypocrites if they ever admitted to buying a book of stamps in a newsagent, as the network was being cut back because many of its services were available elsewhere.

Mr Harris said: "Millions are now buying their car tax discs online and the same goes for many bills thatused to get paid at branches.

"Pensions and benefits can get paid directly into bank accounts and stamps have been available in supermarkets and newsagents for years."

Mr Harris issued his "stamp book challenge" to any critic who claimed no branches should close.

He said: "Are those politicians criticising Labour MPs for not doing enough to save branches really claiming they have not contributed to the Post Office's declining business?

"If they are like the vast majority of the public, they will have taken advantage of the range of services offered online and outside Post Office branches ."

The Post Office network is being slashed by 2500 branches across the UK to cut costs. Mr Harris campaigned to save two - Muirend and Pollokshaws - in his constituency.

He added: "I accept with reluctance that some branches have to close.

"An MP's job is to try to make sure the right branches close and that those which can be viable are saved."

The Government last week survived a Tory motion to suspend the closure programme by just 20 votes.

No Glasgow MP who could have taken part voted for the motion prompting an attack on them by city SNP MSPs.

It is worth pointing out here that there are no SNP MPs for Glasgow, only Labour ones in case any of the readers were wondering.

Fair comment from Tom Harris, I’m not keen on Post Offices closing (though purely from a nostalgic point of view), but haven’t stepped inside one in years. We can’t have a situation were taxpayers heavily subsidise such a service. I pay all my bills online and use the Royal Mails electronic stamp service online when using snail mail. Let’s embrace the 21st century.

Well good for you but not everyone does. There needs to be a balance and for this hypocrite to come out moaning to the ET only shows how detached from reality he really is.

Sadly, Tom Harris has made a good point. The services that the Post Office have depended upon are now only too widely available elsewhere and, in many instances, far more conveniently. Progress often has its casualties. The PO does still have a role and what we must ensure is that those which remain are in the right place and provide the full range of services.

To demand that every branch stays open is the politics of the ostrich - stick your head in the sand and hope that someone else will solve the problem.

I also noted before that only 4 of the SNP MP's could be bothered to turn up for the parliamentary debate. Clearly not an issue high on their list of priorities, despite the brave words.

Not sure what you mean, I got a letter from Tom Harris, stating his reasons for objecting to the closure of Pollokshaws? I hope the PO stays open, but its a decsion for PO Ltd not MPs.

So who raised the motion for the Royal Mail and its services to be privatised?

The Post Office in Pollockshields is to close despite Tom Harris campaiging to keep it open.
It seems 2,500 post office have to close. Is this enough will more close in two years? What is interesting is that two new post offices are to open in Argyll.
