A COMMUNITY is being urged to help kids get on their bikes by donating disused cycles.

Donald Macdonald, of the Woodhill Residents' Group in Bishopbriggs, wants families to search their sheds and garages for old bicycles after reading about a project due to open in the Gorbals next month.

As revealed in the Evening Times, parents will be able to buy reconditioned bikes for their kids for £15-£20 and no bike will cost more than £30.

Dan Flynn cycle and repair shop, run by Martin McMillan, will be based at Gorbals Recycles.

Donald, chairman of the residents' group, said: "It struck a chord with me when I heard about the project with some kids having never had the chance to learn to ride a bike. This is also to show how communities from different parts of the city can help one another."

The project, which will make money for repairs from recycling textiles and cans, has been four years in the planning.

And thanks to a £4500 grant from the Gannett Foundation, run by Newsquest, the parent company of the Evening Times, bike enthusiast Martin can buy equipment for the repair shop.

Moyra Lindsay, who runs the Gorbals Recycles Project, said: "We've had a good response from people keen to help."

They could start with the remains of a bike that has been chained to the 'cycle stand' on Bothwell St next to Sainsburys for donkies now. The back wheel looks as if its seen some hefty stamping action, and its certainly not roadworthy anymore!
