A FATHER who killed his seven-month-old daughter was today told by a judge that he had betrayed his child's trust.
Faisal Younas, 36, of Pollokshields, Glasgow, had seized baby Alishba by the body and injured her head and neck by shaking her.
She was so severely injured she died two
days later at the Royal
Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill.
Younas was jailed for six years and, at the High Court in Glasgow, Lord Hardie said: "Couples who are
fortunate enough to have children have a responsibility to nurture them as they grow up.
"Children of all ages are entitled to trust that their parents will protect them.
"That trust is absolute, particularly in the case of babies and infants who are totally dependent their
parents.
"When your wife was at work you were totally responsible for the care and well-being of your baby daughter.
"You betrayed that trust by assaulting Alishba,
causing internal head injuries and brain damage."
The judge also ordered Younas to be deported on completion of his jail term.
Younas is originally from Lahore, Pakistan, and was given permission to stay in the UK for four years while he applied for asylum.
The period has now ended and his asylum application has been rejected.
The fatal attack took place on September 16, 2005 and he was originally charged with murder.
But this was reduced to the lesser charge of culpable homicide.
Younas was found guilty of the offence in January after a nine-week trial.
A neighbour who saw the child in hospital after the attack described her shock to the jury.
Farzana Koysar, 32, went to Yorkhill Hospital on
September 18, 2005 after getting a call from Alishba's mother to say her daughter was in intensive care.
"Her head was quite swollen up," said the neighbour.
Medical evidence in the trial could find no sign of external trauma, and it was claimed the father had shaken the baby violently once, causing the fatal injuries.
Younas was acquitted of another charge of assaulting a child.
The Crown withdrew charges that Younas and his wife Bano neglected their baby daughter by failing
to feed and clothe her
properly and failing to get medical help for the child and failing to report an assault or a suspected assault on two occasions before her death.
Younas fought back
tears as he sat in the dock, shaking his head from side to side as sentence was passed.
