Knife thug sparks terror in city street

by Marianne Taylor

POLICE are hunting a knife-wielding thug who went on the run after threatening residents in a Glasgow street.

Eyewitnesses told how the man climbed up scaffolding in Cavin Drive, Castlemilk, at around 9.30am today, then shouted at passers-by as he waved a knife around.

Police in riot gear rushed to the scene, which was quickly sealed off.

Scared residents were told to stay indoors and the police helicopter was called in.

The man, who was identified to officers, escaped and is still on the run.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "It was a massive shock when police in full riot gear banged on our door. They were going around telling everybody to stay indoors.

"The area was totally sealed off and there were four police vans outside. The helicopter was flying overhead."

A spokeswoman from Strathclyde Police confirmed they were still hunting the suspect.

She added: "The man made off and inquiries are still being made.

"A named suspect is being sought in connection with the incident."
