1000 set to protest over Botanics club scheme

by Wendy Miller

AROUND 1000 people are gearing up for a major demonstration against controversial plans for a nightclub in Glasgow's Botanic Gardens.

Hundreds of protesters will plant tiny flags across the West End park in a bid to assert their belief the gardens belong to the people of Glasgow and should be safeguarded for future generations.

The protest is going ahead despite reports last week suggesting Stefan King's G1 Group may be pulling out of the plan.

Members of pressure group Save Our Botanics are determined to thwart any proposal to build a restaurant/cafe bar and club in one of the city's best-loved green spaces.

The group's chairman David Howat said: "Our protest will go ahead regardless of reports last week suggesting G1 may withdraw their plans or even part of their plans.

"We have heard no official announcement from Glasgow City Council.

"We still think it is crucial to stage this event to underline the fact that the Botanics is part of the common good' and was given to the city of Glasgow for the benefit of everyone - which means the council has no right to lease it out."

The G1 Group want to invest £7million in the Botanics and had earmarked a disused railway tunnel under the park for a nightclub.

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said: "Glasgow City Council remains in active negotiations with G1 Group."

Sunday's flag protest at will start at 2pm.

Meanwhile the fate of another much-loved Glasgow park is now to be determined by Scottish Ministers.

Earlier this week city councillors voted 14-6 in favour of a tree-top adventure course at Pollok Park, as reported by the Evening Times.

But the matter is to be referred to the Scottish Government because of the council's vested interest in the park and the level of public concern.

I'm sure Mr King, as an astute and successful businessman, realises two things:

1. There is a cold wind blowing in the form of an economic recession and it is likely to blow a chill breeze through the wallets of his target market, scattering their discretionary income to the wind.

2. Glasgow City Council is looking more and more like an organisation which is alienating the public on a large scale.

Under these circumstances is it wise to 'invest' £7 million on a project which could be the next Briggait???

I'm looking forward to this event.

Hopefully turn the tides on those who seek to steal from the people of Glasgow.

There seems to be a consistent theme of councillors actively defying the will of the people they purport to represent.
The Botanics and Pollock Park, both real gems are under attack from commercial interests seeking to establish landmark commercial ventures in otherwise public amenities.
It would likely be the thin end of the wedge should either be allowed to proceed.

As I have asked previously, when was the last time anyone had complete access to George Square? It seems that every time I pass it seems to be prostituted out by GCC to whatever business orginisation willing to pay a fee. From arty farty art exhibitions to tatty carnival rides and overpriced ice rinks. Steven Parse-hole and his GCC cronies are pimps selling OUR SQUARE,IN OUR CITY AND DEPRIVING OUR CITIZENS from enjoying it.This is also a real gem!

What about hundreds of protesters protesting inside the City Chambers?

To all posters

The Councillors make decisions based on Council Officers recommendations, these ill conceived ideas come from employees of the Council not the Councillors themselves. If anyone should be targeted it should be the Executive Director of Land and Environmental Services who issued the edict to Council Officers to generate income from parks.

This is nothing to do with the people of Glasgow, simply a revenue generating exercise.

If ever there was an Freedom of Information request, is why are you doing this?
