ACTOR Robert Carlyle was among more than 1000 people who staged a protest in the Botanic Gardens to show their opposition to a plan for a nightclub in the park.

He was with his wife and children and spoke of his "anger" at the nightclub proposal.

The star of Trainspotting and The Full Monty, who grew up on one side of the gardens in Maryhill and now lives on the other side with his family in Dowanhill, said: "My family and I use this park about three or four times a week, but it's not about me, it's about the thousands of people who regularly use the gardens.

"I am really interested in the history of Glasgow and it angers me so much that anyone could try to claim ownership of even just one square foot of this park; it belongs collectively to the people of this great city."

As they arrived at the gates of the gardens, a piper greeted the protesters, while in the park the Kirkintilloch Kelvin Brass Band played as people planted miniature flags in the plot of land where the proposed bar would be built.

The bar and nightclub plan has met with vehement opposition across the city since news of it emerged last year.

G1 Group, the leisure chain owned by Glasgow entrepreneur Stefan King, initially wanted to spend £7m developing the site of a disused Victorian railway station on the southern edge of the park into a nightclub and cafe/bar.

Save Our Botanics, a group set up to oppose the scheme, has campaigned against the move, but there have been reports Mr King is ready to abandon the nightclub element of the plan.

However, it is not known if G1 still intends to create a bar on the site, which is also opposed by Save Our Botanics.

The scheme has turned into one of the most contentious planning disputes in the city for years and opposition to it has come from every quarter.

Academics, artists, authors and stage and screen celebrities were among the 4000 people who signed a petition opposing the plans.

Novelist and artist Alasdair Gray, Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch and actors Paul Riley, Greg Hemphill and Ford Kiernan from TV comedy Still Game have joined the campaign.

Professor John C Brown, the Astronomer Royal for Scotland, has threatened to resign in protest.

Many of those opposed to the scheme are connected to Glasgow University, as students or staff, and a number of senior professors have been involved in the protests.

David Howat, chairman of Save Our Botanics, said: "Although we have heard the nightclub plans may have been dropped, there has been no official confirmation of this.

"We remain concerned that even if the nightclub scheme is abandoned, some other kind of licensed premises will take its place. That, too, would be unacceptable to us.

"There is a real need in the gardens for a proper visitors' centre, perhaps incorporating a cafe or restaurant, and there would be no problem with that being licensed.

"But we are fundamentally opposed to the leasing of a part of the gardens to a company such as G1."

Kelvin MSP Pauline McNeill said: "I'm hopeful that at the very least the nightclub element has been dropped, but we must continue campaigning until that is confirmed."

LibDems' MSP Robert Brown said: "It's great to see so many people here because people power is a very important factor in issues such as this."

old rat face carlyle . i realise it must be torture for you & your fat cat west end of glasgow clique of megabucks champagne socialist celebs like hemphill & keirnan riley etc ..unlike the rest of the working class glaswegians that you send up . you can always have a choice of all the houses you own to get away from the nightclub ..

The Botanics are a haven of peace and tranquillity and should always remain so. This guy King has plenty of nightclubs (and also, it would appear Glasgow City Council) in his pocket. What will be next - another GoApe development?

King has The Salon, The Loft, The Lane, The Grosvenor, Cul-De-Sac, Radio, Nude, Russells, The Byre, The Viper and The Bothy already in the immediate area.

Then there is Oran Mor right opposite the Botanics which has obviously got Mr King's goat.

I presume the Council did a full review of whether another Club/Licensed premises was required in the area.

Obviously they wouldn't be swayed by Mr King's 'clout' in any way.

Perhaps they will have the balls to explain their decision to permit the lease at some point?

Nobby your name is quite descriptive of you..all you need is a dicky bow and you'll be sorted. The REAL Glaswegians as you like to portray yourself would support such a protest as the parks are for all Glaswegians and as a resident of the Westend and not posh or rich or any other such drivel you may care to spout your remarks reflect badly on you.

It was good to see so many people turn out in such rubbish weather. More power to us!

Although I no longer live in the West End (boo hoo), I cringe when I think of the crap councillors who even consider letting The Botanic Gardens become a mecca for late-night boozers and gamblers. Dear God, is there 'nobody' left in the City Chambers who will stand up and be counted against these so-called entrepreneurs who really only want to make even more money out of Glasgow than they already do. So 'where' is the benefit to the people of the city with a casino in a green area? Why not use the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and the Kelvin Hall as well? After all, They are in the West End as well, Go on City Councellors...ruin the whole city whilst you are at it!

As for the Neanderthals who posted their ill-thought garbage above. Get back to the Bar L where you belong. The West End is far too good for you lot.

What is wrong with these people, green space means exactly that..These parks belong to the people & they are not for sale to anybody regardless of who they are..Go-Ape or Mr King Jnr

eh! anything that gets up the noses of the sheridanista brigade of scottish megabucks west end of glasgow celebrities is fine by me .. people like kiernan . hemphill . riley .. & old rat face carlyle .. like to play the left socialist card till the results start to effect them ... so a night club to help the hard working glaswegians relax can only be a good thing ..

No, no, no nightclub in the Gardens. Never.

The definition of 'gormless' or 'malleable' should be a Glasgow councillor witnessing a property development marketing presentation.

A few snazzy Powerpoints and pictures of shiny glass and happy thin people eating and drinking and they'd let someone turn the Cathedral into a booze hole or apartment block.

God forbid that anyone from Scotland becomes successful. Grow up you fool.

At least Carlyle was out there pushing for the rights of all people who use the park....which was probably more than you were, as you sat at your computer typing drivel for all to see.

Spot on. Robert carlyle lives nearby and has as much right as anyone to protest here. And I'm not sure his 'political thinking' really comes into the equation on a local issue anyway. The more I hear the kind of 'prolier than thou' baws from guys like nobby the more I despair of this place.

Opinion: don't really care, don't live in the West End anymore, generally think parks should be used as parks, don't understand the vilification of Stefan King, don't think the supply demand argument really applies to Byres Rd (nightclub customers willl be drawn to the 'new' rather than sticking to the same places), and wonder if there's no demand for alcohol in the Botanics why do you see so many people sitting on the grass and drinking on sunny days?

i dont know what all the fuss is about, i remember right at the gates of the botanic gardens there was a nightclub and a wee shop that sold papers and fags it was a smashing wee night club but i cant remember the name of it and there was never any trouble @ the venue

Nobby - oh how you live up to your name. Leave Carlyle alone. That man is an asset to Glasgow and the West End. He worked hard to get where he is but unlike a lot of others he still stays in Glasgow, in the city, not in some walled mansion in the country or some corner of LA. We should celebrate talent like Robert who are willing to come along as a member of the public and support a good cause. I'd like to see you if you ever became sucessful, which will never happen, if it did I bet we'd never see your face in the west end. You probably don't live here anyway!
