A security issue.Number one reason for keeping the lights on.I do it when I leave my home unattended and make sure the music is loud. Its my choice.I dont buy into this carbon emmission talk.As far as I can see it has been used as an excuse to raise various taxes.Once again we have a know it all group(never heard of before) trying to tell citizens how to run their business.
Leaving lights on a shop certainly does not send any signal to me.

Dan, you might not buy into any of that talk, but there's no doubting you'd save on your leccy bills if you were to use less leccy...

I agree. It's this decade's political cause. Perhaps if China stops emiting all the crap they do into the atmosphere then things may change, otherwise leaving a couple of lights on or putting them off makes no difference.

This is pathetic, nect it will be the street lights and the festival of light etc.
What about all those shops in London and other cities - why was Glasgow specifically targetted?
As Jim says - Get a life! If this is major news, you'd probably be better of in bed - not missing much!

I am struggling to believe that this nonsense of a story is allowed to be printed, who is the editor of this once proud Glasgow institution and why are they allowing this no story to be put on the front page?
I'd expect this level of journalsim in the Gen, Glaswegian etc not in an alleged top selling newspaper, Has anyone any idea of the circulation figures of the evening time's over the past couple of years?

We don't need to light up the city chambers and our other historic buildings and bridges etc. And lets put some low watt bulbs in the streetlamps too. Aaargh!

Is that not polluting the atmosphere? What about the hot air that comes from people's mouths as well?
Surely these must be up there along with car exhausts and leaving lights on.
Or is it just the fact that its April Fool's Day?

If I don't find a decent story about this debacle in The Herald when I'm reading that esteemed publication in the BhS cafeteria this afternoon, then I'll be marching to the top of Renfield Street to demand my 70p back!

This is not really a front page story. Do we want to follow the example in German shops which at night have it seems one small 40 watt so called energy saving "device" for illumination. Of course not. Shop keepers want windows with good lighting to sell there wares.
It promotes a good shop with a well lite good window display. Also there are sucurity concerns. Does an electrical/TV shop in a high street want windows with no lighting? Of course not.Is this an 1st April story?

How does leaving the shop lights on prevent someone from panning in the window and nicking a telly? If anything, doesn't it make things easier for the thieves?

We should all get these night vision glasses to wear then we could keep all the lights in our houses turned off. TV should finish at 10 pm. That would save the planet. Who cares if we are all miserable as a result.

Think on the paper and power you have used printing this drivel ET. Not to mention the carbon emissions from peoples monitors as they read it.
Oh yes, you are the real eco-criminals!
It would be pretty dificult to navigate Buchanan Street without the aid of light really, don't you think?

Ahhh, tasty!!!

Don't believe for a minute that GCC has any sense of ethics, morals or standards when it comes to environmental, or energy saving initiatives.
This is all purely down to ways of screwing yet more money out of us whatever way they can get away with.
The lengths to which GCC are stooping to alienate themselves come the next election are mind boggling - lets just hope people have long memories to vote out these twits who have charged us through the nose for way too long.
Notice how the Councillors, MSP's and MP's all still manage to claim their exorbitant expenses from our hard earned wages - taxation.
And, notice how the Councillors all seem to milk the system in many other ways. One rule for them - another for us ordinary, hard working people!
Double standards or what ?

In a world where you will be fined £40 for 'idling' ie. sitting in your car with it's engine running while you wait to pick someone up (and these authorities have a phoneline for grasses to report you if you do) then it's hardly surprising the pointless waste of energy lighting up empty shops at night is exposed. But what about the various 'monuments' and 'artworks' which are illuminated at night by GCC wasting much more energy than these shops?? For instance, why is the university lit up at night? Have you seen the size of those floodlights up close?? Presumably its not to guide passing aircraft to the airport..
Also, why do so many government agencies waste so much energy on plasma TV screens? Come to think of it shouldn't these energy-guzzling decadent plasma TV sets just be banned in general?? We seemed to manage OK before they were invented.. and everything else is getting banned it seems..
