Licensing board man quits in Guinness row

David Meikle slammed the board's policy on a Guinness promotion

A MEMBER of Glasgow's licensing board has quit after being slammed for supporting an Evening Times Guinness giveaway.

But today David Meikle said he stood by his opinion that the banned St Patrick's Day freebie did not encourage binge drinking.

Despite also quitting the council's planning committee over the controversial Go Ape approval last week, Mr Meikle vowed to continue as a councillor and devote more time to local issues in his Pollokshields ward.

The resignation was prompted by a letter from Strathclyde Licensed Trade Association, which said Mr Meikle's position was "untenable" following his comments last month.

The councillor criticised a decision by the board to warn pub chain O'Neill's that the Guinness promotion - which offered readers a single free pint - breached the city's strict policy banning any offer said to encourage irresponsible drinking.

But at the time, Mr Meikle branded the decision "over the top", saying safeguards had been put in place to ensure readers received only one free pint.

And he said enforcement officers should instead be concentrating on the city's many bars that sell to underage drinkers.

Michael McHugh, of the SLTA, who reported the offer to the licensing board, later contacted officials to say Mr Meikle should go.

In the letter, he said: "How can a member of the licensing board whose duty is to enforce those conditions, set by his colleagues and himself, continue in that position?

"His position is untenable as this undermines the policy conditions themselves and the officers of the council who are instructed to enforce them."

Today Mr McHugh claimed he had not been "going for (Mr Meikle's) scalp" .

Mr McHugh said: "Rules are rules. The whole country thinks it's a stupid idea but we should all be working on a level playing field.

"Whether you are a small licensee or a massive pub chain which can afford to have an offer like this in a newspaper, you have to stick to the rules."

He added: "When the board speaks in public it should speak with one voice. If there is dissent it should go on behind closed doors. In public, members should stick to the party line."

Mr Meikle, the council's sole Tory councillor, said he had previously been considering leaving the board. It was soon to meet three times a week to process hundreds of applications to bring city premises into line with new liquor laws.

He said: "I have decided to stand down because I just don't have the time to give the board the attention it deserves.

"However, in light of my recent comments on the Evening Times/ O'Neill's promotion - which I do not withdraw but which were seen as contrary to board policy - I have taken the opportunity to stand down, ensuring the board's policy is upheld.

"This also means I can devote more time to my other commitments as a local councillor."

It is surely unheard of for a politician to resign as a matter of principle these days. Who does this guy think he is by resigning twice? Someone should pull him up and point out that he was elected to Glasgow City Council and we're not really used to this kind of stuff.

On a serious note, if the Scottish Ministers call in the application I think there will be questions to be answered about the planning committee and especially the report that we prepared for them. Dig up the endangered species and overlook the word "objection" in the National Trust letter, you couldn't make it up.

It's a pity that David Meikle has resigned from both committees as we are badly in need of someone like him involved in the decision-making process in Glasgow i.e. a few principles mixed in with a dash of common sense. A rare combination in George Square these days.

If the Scottish Ministers decide NOT to call in the Go Ape application the there will be even more questions needing to be answered. The report drawn up by the planning officers and accepted at face value by the councillors is a disgrace and breaches practically every regulation in the book.

David Meikle is a daft wee boy, who is not really mature enough to perform his role as a councillor.

The Tories must be pulling their hair out, given that he is th eonly Tory on Glasgow City Council.

Jim Brown is just a daft old fud, who is really not competent enough to express a coherent opinion on the ET.

Glasgow City Council must be pulling their hair out, given that he is the only numpty daft enough to side with them.

Well done Mr Meikle sir, as a man of self-respect and principle; it must have been very lonely in amongst all those self-serving, greedy toerags!

David Meikle is a Councillor who speaks up for local residents. I admire a Councillor who has the guts to put local people before himself and resigned his position as a point of principal. If you bothered to read his comments you will also see that he resigned from the Licensing Board because he was honest enough to say that he had made a mistake a considered it important that the board policy was upheld.

You are obviously so mature that you would prefer Councillors who look after their party interest and ignore the wishes of the people who elect them. Without wishing to be rude you do come across as something of a muppet. Oops I've just lowered myself to your standard.

"When the board speaks in public it should speak with one voice. If there is dissent it should go on behind closed doors. In public, members should stick to the party line"

This is one of the clearest examples of what is wrong with our elected officials today. The "party line" is what runs our government, at all levels. However, it is not the "party line" that elects these morons. It is not the "party line" that pays them and their salaries, stipends and exorbitant expenses. It us, The People and this is what we are getting for our efforts. The "party line" wants to crush freedom of speach and all dissenters, what "party" are we talking about here, the Communist Party?
I thought that had been proven a failed doctrine.

We need an effective recall tool to deal with these morons who insist that all "toe the party line" AND those who are so weak that they do what they are told by these morons, ignoring their contistuents wishes and we need it NOW.

Well done David Meikle.

Maybe David Meikle resigned from the board as he couldn't get enough time off school to attend the meetings.

Besides what principles does he have... I believe he used to be a member of the labour party, now the Tories, what next?

Spot on Jim as ever, this little boy should go back to Croftfoot and play hopscotch and leave the business of running the City to the professionals. The lad is simply out of his depth and has had to leave two committees in less than a year of being elected (under PR mind you) Lets hope this development will restore credibility in both committees.

So what does this mean? You have to 50 to be of any worth?

Tell that to the two teenage brothers in Dublin that sold their software company to a Canadian company for millions just last week.

Does this attitude reflect that you were not able to achieve anything when you were young?

If you dimiss youth, mistakes and all, you dismiss the future.

Exactly jimmyk, the problem is Jobby Brown is just a troll on here and everyone has a wee laugh at him as he spouts his daily quota of bitterness.

Syd

Not daily quota of bitterness?

I have a job and a life!
