GLASGOW Airport's new £30million extension is just 200 days from opening to passengers.

The countdown to the launch of the futuristic building came as construction workers finished the first phase on time.

The metal structure of Skyhub now dominates the former site of the walkway between the main terminal and T2.

It will house the most advanced security zone in the UK when it opens in October, and it represents the biggest single investment at the airport since the international pier opened in 1994.

All passengers will be channelled through the two-storey hub, which will have bars, shops and restaurants.

Gordon Dewar, the airport's managing director, joined staff from contractors Balfour Beatty at a special ceremony to mark the completion of the main structure.

He said: "We are delighted with the progress being made.

"With Skyhub, everything will be under one roof.

"No matter where you're travelling, once you've passed through security, you can eat, shop or relax any- where in the terminal."

The 4000sq ft security zone - the size of a football pitch - will be bathed in natural light as the entire front of the building will be covered in translucent cladding.

The revolutionary system, called Kalwall, has been used at Orlando Sanford Airport in Florida, Arsenal's Emirates Stadium and Nasa's base at Cape Canaveral.

The material is energy- efficient, allows daylight to flood into the building and retains heat.

Skyhub is part of a planned £200m, 10-year investment at Glasgow Airport by operator BAA Scotland.

Tim Clarke, divisional managing director for Balfour Beatty, said: "Working in a live airport environment produces its own challenges.

"This calls for the highest calibre of people working together with the client, design team and supply chain."

Councillor Iain Nicolson, Renfrewshire's depute Provost, who attended the ceremony, said: "Glasgow Airport is going from strength to strength and this investment will significantly improve the customer experience.

"The Skyhub will mark the latest phase of BAA's programme to build on that success."

A rip off shopping centre and a rip off car park. with a runway attached.

Such new investments are never a true reflection of what the public needs - just what the greedy private developers want.

Otherwise we'd see far more expansion of runways, and far less commercial development alongside this latest £30 million "Skyhub" project.

People of Glasgow, and tourists alike are being had, ripped off & done by all the fines, taxes, and charges they face in and around this city.

Until G.C.C. in all it's so called wisdom introduces more incentives for people to i.e. recycle & reductions in people council tax to reflect their efforts how can they expect the most stubborn & resistant people to move with the times.

Its about rewarding people for how well they do in improving their city as well as punishing those who choose to abuse the law of the land & their privilages that come with it.

The state of the roads are a disgrace, because the country is expanding to fast to be able to keep up with itself.

We are not upgrading the infrastructures & roads & motorways in tune with the new housing developments, retail parks & shopping centres.

Once we actually start to build roads which are made to last, like our European neighbours maybe then we'll stop seeing all the pot holes, and wearing away that have seen so many accidents & insurance claims in recent years.

Glasgow Airport may be getting busier - but lets focus on the state of the ground as well as the air travellers!

All that money spent and I bet we still have to change flights at Manchester, Gatwick or the like if we want to go inter-continental
