A SCOTS-BASED low-cost airline has hired nearly 130 new staff to cope with summer demand.

Flyglobespan has recruited extra cabin crew to work on long-haul flights to America and Canada as part of its expansion plans, as well as flights to Spain.

The additional staff were taken on in preparation for the launch of the budget airline's summer schedule last week.

Airline bosses recruited 93 extra crew for services in and out of Glasgow Airport and another 35 at Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports.

A spokeswoman said: "The new staff have been taken on to work on flyglobespan's increased flying programme for the summer. This includes daily flights from Glasgow to Alicante, Malaga, Palma, Faro, Barcelona and Orlando as well as the start of our Canadian programme which starts in May and includes twice weekly flights to Toronto and twice weekly flights to Calgary/Vancouver direct from Glasgow."

The new starts will board their first planes out of Glasgow from April 21, with chief executive Rick Green commenting: "I am pleased that the popularity of our summer flying programme has lead to a requirement for more staff and allowed us to provide further jobs in Scotland.

"Both core and new routes are performing ahead of budget and for this we are very grateful to our customers who continue to show great loyalty in choosing to fly with a Scottish airline over other low-cost airlines."

Joining the Glasgow team will be Gary Henry, 20, from Garelochhead, Argyll and Bute. He said: "I am so delighted to be joining an exciting and growing airline such as flyglobespan.

"It has always been a dream of mine to work in the aviation industry and flyglobespan have made this possible."

Flyglobespan has also appointed Mark Duguid as its new product director while Mark Hodgkinson becomes the company's operations manager. The low cost airline now employees more than 1300 staff.

Let's give Fly Globespan the benefit of the doubt after last summer's long haul fiasco. The dud planes have gone, their own planes are back from sub lease and experienced staff have been appointed to run the operation, let alone the new recruits at 'ground' level.

I believe Tom Dalrymple will be spending more time with the wife and letting the new guys turn the airline around. I expect they'll merge or be taken over by another airline before too much longer.

A merger is more than likely I'd think. Probably about time - however, it'll more than likely take the headquarters out of Scotland!

Given the current downturn at Glasgow airport
one wonders if it would generate enough passengers to fill a Globespan flight?
Todays March figures from BAA make grim reading indeed. :(

In case anyone doesn't know, 'Foxy' is Joe Curry from Livingston. A retired travel industry operative who spends his time on many an internet forum doing his best to downplay any efforts by Glasgow Airport or associated airlines and businesses to promote or improve services and facilities for air travellers in the west of Scotland. He spends a lot of his days analysing BAA passenger statistics looking for little downturns at Glasgow to exploit and the rest of his time promoting all things 'Edinburgh or 'Edinburgh Airport', which in case you didn't know is apparently the centre of the known universe and the rightful, much maligned epi-centre of the Scottish aviation industry. Eh Joe ?

Yup Joe Curry from Livingston is a true embarrassment to Edinburgh. The guys over in the east can't stand the ground he walks on and The Scotsman newspaper is full of his garbage about hom much he hates Glasgow and how much he loves Edinburgh. He uses various guises in many forums but nowadays everyone knows who it is and ignores him. Chokingly childish and utterly pathetic!

There was not a downturn on the flights my wife and I took to Malaga recently, the occupancy was about 98%. Crew were good and efficient.
Now I understand their long haul flights are atrocious, also no one will answer any e-mails,letters about complaints.
Airline forums crucify this airline and not without good reason
