Wardens on night shift in parking blitz

by Chris Musson

PARKING wardens could soon be working the night shift in Glasgow city centre ... until 4am.

Selfish drivers face having their cars towed during the late-night clampdown in one of the city's busiest clubbing streets.

Officials say the move is needed because motorists are blocking a taxi rank and bus stops in Sauchiehall Street, so hampering efforts to clear the city centre.

From tomorrow, cars parked illegally from 6-10pm will be given a ticket, towed away and impounded.

From May 2, there are plans for wardens to work 8pm-4am shifts, which will allow the ticketing and towing to be carried out throughout the night.

A council spokesman said it still had to arrange wardens to cover the late shifts, but hoped they would be in place for next month.

Glasgow Community and Safety Services is behind the plans.

The council-owned body runs the CCTV-monitored Nite Zones, which are aimed at increasing safety in the busiest nightlife areas and clearing the streets quicker using taxi queue marshalls.

However, bosses say illegally parked cars in the Nite Zone in Sauchiehall Street, between Charing Cross and Elmbank Street, are causing major problems.

GCSS managing director Phil Walker said: "Many cars park in the area illegally, both on restricted sections (yellow lines) and within the bus bays and taxi rank, forcing taxis to stop on the outer lane to pick passengers up.

"This impacts on people's safety and creates delays and traffic congestion at a time when people want to go home.

"Our priority is people and where unlawful parking affects their safety we will work with partners to target issues to maintain Glasgow's reputation of being a safe place to visit."

GCSS and the council have been building up to the towing campaign in recent weeks by leafleting vehicles to remind drivers of the rules.

The Nite Zone project in Sauchiehall Street started in June 2006, following the start of a similar initiative near Central Station.

The aim is to improve public safety and help people get home quicker after a night out in Glasgow. Police say the move has helped reduce the number of violent crimes in the city centre.

Details of the towing scheme emerged in a report to Glasgow's Local Licensing Forum, which was set up under the new Licensing Act.

It is made up of licensed trade representatives, local residents, councillors, and officials from the police, health board, council, and business and tourism bodies.

Glasgow has an obsession with parking and this is just another way to make the motorist pay,how much more can they squeeze out of us.. they should concentrate on repairing the roads all over glasgow which are in a deplorable state..

Don't agree with this particular idea especially when there are insufficient patrols around schools to ensure offenders are dealt with. Call it selfish but I would rather my kids were safe from inconsiderate parkers than a taxi at Charing Cross be unable to get in.

could not agree with this any more!

We pay all our taxes including road tax for what, the roads ALL over Glasgow are a total mess. Even in your new car you feel as if your driving a truck going over all the hundred pot holes. I have made a claim against one pot whole which burst my new £100 tyre and once it was reported the very next day it was patched up so no more claims come against it... that was 4 months ago and still not heard anything back.

Why wardens, why not more police to keep crime and anti social behaviour lower rather than all the drunks who drink at their own free will and then at most times drink far far far too much and then struggle to find themsleves home let alone the nearest taxi or bus stop.

Now we people who actually like to go out and have a decent time and hey if you enjoy a drink or two fine but why make it even harder to park in later hours than it already is. Yes people should not park in taxi, disable or bus bays but the rest should be made available within reason to make it a place were you can at times not always get a parking space.

Dont agree with it as its a waste of money no doubt these wardens rather than tackling the hot spots will no doubt carry on their duties all over the town and just be a pain, but if they do their job right then credit to them.

In reply to Mr T's comment re potholes - I am in no way a fan of Glasgow City Council, but you must remember 2 things. Having worked for various councils, including Glasgow, I understand that the Roads Depts rely heavily on members of the public to report potholes. They can't fix them if they don't know they are there. Also council tax has been frozen for 2 or 3 years now, so the council is financially worse off now than before, because of inflation. It doesn't surprise me at all if the council are using the wardens as a means of creating revenue. The state of the roads in Glasgow seems to have got a lot worse in recent months and I would urge anyone who's car is damaged to put in a claim asap. I certainly will be the next time my car's damaged.

If its on Sauchihall st at night i dont have a problem with that. Cause usually at that time of night its spoilt mummy's boys driving about arrogantly in their parents, Saab's and BMW's. And being a parking nuisance. Tickets them up to the eyeballs has far has i am concerned.

To be fair, outside schools its generally other parents who are illegally parked. At the one near me, the attitude of many of them is shocking. As long as their kid doesnt have to walk more than two feet to the school gates, theyre not fussed who else they endanger.

Agree totally, and back to my point, there is no one patrolling the schools on a regular basis to deal with these parents. Whether in minority or not, they are wrong. Breakfast clubs are now a free for all. Lets sort the schools and similar establishments before worrying about who's parked where during the night.

Sauchiehall Street is a disaster waiting to happen. Any kind of major incident in the area discussed would be catastrophic as major services would struggle to get there due to the unbelievable congestion caused by double parked vehicles, including us taxis dropping punters off. As for getting to the rank to pick folks up to clear the street at peak times....forget it!!!!

ALL PARKING should be banned at these times except for public transport stopping to drop off or pick up.

Infact, pedestrianise the whole street altogether, providing only a throughgate for taxis & small buses to get to the public. This will provide maximum public safety and a more pleasant night out for everyone creating more space and keeping it "well lit".

Taxi drivers being the eyes and ears of the city center would be glad to hold a meeting with the council and help MOVE this city in the "proper" direction, free of charge....or do you all in the chambers think that idea is STILL too simplistic???

How can they justify this, and yet another story in this paper says GCC is contemplating cutting jobs? Which is it?

Is GCSS part of GCC? Who will pay for this? Are they in cahoots with the taxis?

Will they be handing out fines to the taxi drivers who double park when the taxi rank is full in sauchihall street and hope street making only one lane available for other motorists.

As a black taxi driver, I AGREE with you The Duke. Rank disapline is of utmost importance and "Black" taxis must stick to this. Privates are complete nightmare, they double park anywhere!!

Anyway, that is another issue that in itself is CAUSED by ranks not being big enough due to the PARKED CARS at peak times. So in other words, would you rather this one lane for your car OR close the street down altogether to traffic EXCEPT the public service vehicles as I suggested above, to give us taxis and small buses achance to get your wee boy & wee lassie home quickly and off the street quicker.

It's one or the other The Duke....Priority for your cars OR priority for the majority of the public waiting for taxis???

I will say it AGAIN. Let us do our job at this time, you WILL NOT need to bring your car into town as we will get to you a lot quicker....motorist are causing there own delay due to volume, hence public transport reliability fails you because of this!!

I personally think this is a ridiculous idea due to the fact the city centre isn’t that safe at night at the best of times. I often drive my car into town. This is mainly due to the fact I do not drink therefore I am able to drive home. As for the taxis that’s fine if people have been drinking however I don’t exactly stay close to the city centre so its expensive for me to get a taxi home therefore this is another reason why I choose to take my car. Also I can not get a bus to where I live as I would have to walk from Sauciehall Street down to the other end of the town which isn’t the safest especially at the weekends and my busses are not frequent enough.

As for parking illegally yeah I’ve parked on yellow lines outside the hall and so on but I wouldn’t park in a taxi rank or a bus stop that’s just silly! And I certainly wouldn’t park in the car park behind the kings theatre, as at 3am its not same for me to walk round there and I don’t always leave the clubs at the same time as my friends. I have been going out in Glasgow for years and I have never seen it as a major problem, the town is always going to be busy at that time of night so changing it isn’t going to really help!

Taxi drivers dont use the ranks anyway!, they stop in the middle of the street to pick up as a matter of course. they are either doing the ton to get the mug in the back to wherever they are going so they cabn get back to crawling at 10 miles an hour in case they see another mug.

hey i've got a good idea.... gie the wardens a sweeping brush and a shovel then that will save the crossing guards cleaning up during the day! see! problem solved, and gie the wardens the number of the polis so they can dae a bit of policing if the anti social and graffitti artists or even the cat burglars are up tae their usual offences(this is called multi tasking, normaly called by mothers as "dain a hunner things at wanse"....c'mon you gcc you slipped up there, ahve saved ye hunners of pounds already!

As Donny says, leave your car at home and let the taxi drivers fleece you for everything you have. Sit back and watch the driver go the long road to your destination, cross boundaries so they can double your fare and sit on their arses while you struggle out and still expect a tip!

Even if fire engines and emergency vehicles are unable to get access to premises on account of selfish and inconsiderate drivers???

I'm certainly no fan of the council, but reading through these posts (and on other similar threads) it would appear that there are a number of people think it perfectly acceptable to park wherever they like, regardless of the inconvenience and/or danger they pose to others. And that attitude is precisely what gives the council all the excuse that they need to bring in even more money-making schemes to fleece motorists.

There are plenty of parking spaces on bath street, blythswood, charing x side of sauchiehall street, etc.

There are usually plenty spaces there at night, and it is free.

So if you take your car into town at night, which I occassionally do, just park it in one of these spots. They are only a wee walk from Sauchiehall Street and are busy enough that most people will feel safe.

Then you won't get fined or park ilegally. Simple.

In reply to Jill - are you trying to say that there are no pot holes on the roads of Glasgow, that the road department drivers use. Or are these council workers just typical council employees and not reporting pot holes, so not to be sent out to fill them, ie creating more work for themselves. GET REAL. We pay enough taxes and should expect the money to be spent properly and not to fund the fat cats of the council with over-inflated wage packets, and give nothing back in return
Posted by: flyingscot, Crookston on 4:02pm Thu 10 Apr 08
Why did we allow councils to take control of parking restrictions 24/7 when they can't enforce the same restrictions? We should have left it in police hands like other areas where passing police officers at any time could pull up and give people tickets or lectures for their parking. If there was a number of parking complaints the police were told to watch it and book folk, and it worked. People paid attention to the police and nobody just jumped in the car and drove off from them. Now the council are more interested in collecting the revenue than keeping traffic safe and moving.

In any case why should anybody be bothered by this. It's quite simple if you park at a corner, at an entrance or on yellow lines when signs say you can't you'll get a ticket / car lifted to the pound. If you don't, you don't get a ticket. It's so simple isn't it?

traffic wardens have a terrible job, they get threatened, on their feet for 8 or nine hours, paper work to do, watch out for drunk beligerent drivers, no respect given and have to keep quiet as some 4foot11 tells them (a 6 footer) "i keel you!) as they are handed a ticket.the more i see the way some people are disrespectful, the more i like dogs!

@haud me back I was waiting for this kind of comment, "THE MYTH" about us taxi drivers is as strong as ever....useless, negative, unconstructive, ignorant point of view. This is why you will remain "stuck" in the town.

Without getting into a debate about whether you like your local cabbie or not, the truth is we are the only means of getting drunk & sober folk home safely....outside there front door. Im sure an extra tenner for this privilage is worth it...or should that tenner have went to the £70 to £100 on drink?? Oh incidently, 4 folk sharing a taxi to Robroyston give me hassle for the tenner or so....that's £2.50 EACH....I rest my case!!

It's bums on seats I want in the taxi to make my money...not taking a drunk an extra mile detour, why do I want them in the cab any longer...our tariffs are that low it's not worth it...cheapest "city" hack in UK...rmember...see for yourself here on the tariff league tables. We are 327th in the table... http://www.phtm.co.u

@Nicola anyway back to what we were discussing. I think you are right to feel unsafe when walking in certain parts of the town. But a well lit, better managed "nite zone" like we have around the central station area has cut crime by 28%, RTA's by 15% and we (taxis) have cut the taxi Q waiting times from 1 hour to upwards of 30 mins. Strathclyde police have hailed it as a success and so have the punters who use it regularly now. The time they eat there kebab, they are at the front of the Q, that no longer gets skipped and a marshal opens the taxi door for you.

Now if we can improve the congestion problem in Sauchiehall St AND other parts of the city center at this time...providing "well lit" areas, you could get public transport right in the heart of the Street to start your night and leave from the same general area in a much faster more reliable public transport vehicle WITHOUT taking a wee walk to the less safe areas of the city...eg, through lanes or round at the kings theatre area that is generally darkened. The congestion and delay IS what makes folk take a wee stroll to see if they can get transport home elsewhere...includin
g taxi "touts" that incidently charge upto 3 times a black hack would that folk actually pay!!!

Can you not see that they whole "nightmare" of getting home safely and quickly from here stems from something as silly as a load of parked cars and poor traffic/people management at these times. It forces cars/ taxis, buses to over rank, double park etc etc.

When you get in a taxi, you like to be dropped off outside the pubs front door....not half a mile away where its safe!!!

Nicola, your wee car is adding to the problem!!

The secret here Nicola is cooperation from the general public and adequate/proper funding and management by the City Council to get this city a place we can all confidently walk about in and "FEEL" safe.

When will YOU Nicola, stop using your car. When traffic volume has increased by 30% by 2020 or when fuel prices have doubled. How far do you stay from the city? Can you share a taxi with pals.

There's no need to park on Sauchiehall St anyway... Plenty of streets surrounding it! I was down at the weekend, and when my booked taxi came to pick me up, it couldn't get to the pavement because of parked cars... meaning that we had to get in the taxi on the road. Not exactly safe at the speed of some cars!
Posted by: mrrealistic, glasgow on 5:17pm Thu 10 Apr 08
Donny, like nicola i drive into town at night, am i also part of the problem? Like nicola I have parked on the single yellow lines at the hall and around the kings, again am i part of the problem? I don't think so. I am parking within restrictions as far as I'm concerned. I'm not going to get a taxi out of town if I don't have a drink and can therefore drive, why waste my money and the money of my friends who can get a lift with me. I pay the money to run my car so I'll use it as much as i can. It would be a ridiculus idea for Glasgow City Council to start parking restrictions at night because it would make people think twice about going into certain areas of town. And as for asking Nicola when she's gonna stop using her car, probably about the same time you stop using yours, i hear Asda in Govan are recruiting. And i also assume you keep the engine going whilst waiting for a fare like most taxi drivers, think of the pollution, tut tut.

Down with the taxi drivers, common the extended tube hours!
Posted by: Donny, Glasgow on 5:31pm Thu 10 Apr 08
No mrrealistic, my engine is OFF at ALL times due to the HIGHER fuel costs and the 0% tariff rise we were due in Febuary...you have no idea friend.

And yes, if you bring your car into town at peak times and expect a reliable service from the public transport during such times...Im afraid your not going to get one because your car & Nicola's car has made cars double park creating congestion all the way back. In the meantime, your car and Nicola's car is stopping your wee cousin get a taxi as we cannot get to the ranks to take your wee cousin home promptly and safely....both your wee cars are making the taxi Q get bigger and bigger creating frustration, fights, folk to walk away through dangerous parts of the town!!

Your car and Nicola's car is MOST CERTAINLY adding to the problem and its great to see someone finally admit they are part of it.

This makes it difficult for US chaps (taxi) drivers, so then WE become part of the problem!!

Can you not see the BIGGER picture??

Incidently, I do not own a car, I only drive the taxi....I live 3 miles from the city center and still use public transport if need be...I've even walked for a wee bit of excerise lol

I may be missing the point here but if everybody just parked where they were supposed to and left the bus stops, taxi ranks and no parking zones clear, would that not solve the problem?

As I and others have mentioned, there are more than enough parking spaces in safe areas.
Posted by: mrrealistic, glasgow on 6:25pm Thu 10 Apr 08
Donny, I think you initially made some good points but wasted it by have a go at nicola's, and since then my own motives for driving into town at night. Private cars parked legally in spaces (including those with single yellow lines as Nicola and myself have both done which is allowed at that time of night) are not the problem. Too many taxi's are the problem. Taxi's choose to double park instead of moving away and therefore are the problem. I actually believe a taxi rank should be made outside au natural on woodlands road because that's where i walk to when i do drink so my taxi doesn't waste time in sauchiehall street and can get straight onto the motorway. If you are campaigning for that measure you ahve my support.
Posted by: Donny, Glasgow on 7:24pm Thu 10 Apr 08
Sure, I agree mrrealistic...im not having a go at you or Nicola or any normal motorist, the issue here will not go away, instead get worse as more and more folk may opt to bring there own cars into town for reasons already mentioned. This to continue is not an option as car owners/users is increasing.

Alternative options are now needed in order to "get home" quicker and safer and everything discussed previous needs to be seriously looked at. We as motorist, yes, that includes me too, need to adopt a new way of thinking on how we commute in general, whether its work or leisure.

The general motorist will opt to use his/her car regardless without forethought of the concequences it brings...ie congestion.

It's a new modern Glasgow we live in now and is getting busier & busier. It's high time we ALL start to think about how we can move around this city and its present road infrastructure, without jumping in the car.

By the way mrrealistic, thanks for your support regarding the taxi rank issue & is great to see someone in the city recognise at long last Glasgow is bing crippled by more and more private care hire!!! The council threatened to add more "blacks" on the road during peak times but we recognised that would make things worse...PROPER management can speed up the process as seen in the nite zone. If we had a clear, easy access to the Sauchiehall Street rank, I guarentee all of you guyz & Girlz, we will get you all home in a flash...well max 30 mins waiting which is the fastest for any main UK city & the cheapest (see my link above)!!

never mind the evening comforts of the clubbers
what about the daily agonies of hospital out patients and visitors?
has anyone taken note of the challenges encountered by elderly and infirm coming or going to the Southern General in particular?
bus stops are obliterated by cars which are double parked causing further restriction to free traffic flow on this main road especially when an HGV coming or going from either the docks or sewage works encounters a similar vehicle or bus travelling in the opposite direction,
I have witnessed scant regard for the pedestrian crossing near the hospital gates. we also teach children not to cross a road between parked vehicles yet we are also obliged to board or otherwise a bus with passengers stuck in the middle of the road whilst some ignoramous sounds a horn in impatience

There is and always has been an AGENDA with Glasgow councillors copied throughout the UK.

When double yellow lines were first introduced
the maximum charge was a couple of pounds. No one screamed at the time as this didn't seem an extortionate amount for a simple parking offence. However there was a LONG TERM plan that would slowly introduce this offence then hammer the motorists with massive fines leading in some cases to bully boy sheriff officers and the very threat to repossession of homes.

We are seeing, like the potential new CRIMES relating to dumping of rubbish, that is creating unnecessary stealth taxes to pay for the ever expanding salaries of the self appointed control freaks who see MONEY in parking SCAMS.

Motorists pay ROAD TAX that includes the use of roads to park when necessary. These EXTRA charges are in fact a massive fraud against the public by councillors abusing their positions and using threats and intimidation to EXTORT money from the unsuspecting victims of their CRIMINALITY.

These lunatics running the asylum are making a REVOLUTION in Scotland much closer driving people insane with their ruthless use of THUGS to impose their illegal fines. It is the naive public that are not aware that they are paying EXTORTIONISTS who if challenged in Common law courts with juries would win hands down.
Not the International Maritime Admiralty courts across Scotland ,with no juries , only hand picked lackeys of the state imposing draconian and essentially medieval taxes on Scotlands long suffering motorists.

They ALL need OUTLAWED for their crimes.

However, bosses say illegally parked cars in the Nite Zone in Sauchiehall Street, between Charing Cross and Elmbank Street, are causing major problems.

Glasgow City Council must admit now that the pavements are narrow to the point of unsafe, within that area of the city. For the amount of rates paid in that area. Glasgow Businesses get a poor service from the local authority charged with a duty of care.

Thank you Donny for your comments and for, like several other posters here, making a constructive debate on this issue. However the above two posters have seperate issues going on there so i think I'll retire from this debate. Hospital parking issues, been there, discussed that, I'm moving on. Cheers.
mr realistic ...your opinions are absolutely crucial. I trust you will continue comment further on other important debates!!

Many thanks.

Get the traffic wardens out at the schools as well, parents are still dropping off their kids on the zig zags the traffic wardens appear but make it obvious they are there. They need to catch the people at the schools before theres an accident.

Who are the traffic wardens who will volunteer for the "'til 4am" shift in Sauchiehall Street? Jeez - even the Polis get a rough enough time of it.

Since there's taxi drivers on here... Why do taxis get to use restricted bus/taxi lanes? To my mind, one driver and one or two people sitting in the back doenae really constitute public transport. Seems to be that if you can afford a taxi through the city centre then you get to benefit from concessions not extended to the motorist with as many people in the car.

responding to Steviewatt "In reply to Jill - are you trying to say that there are no pot holes on the roads of Glasgow, that the road department drivers use. Or are these council workers just typical council employees and not reporting pot holes, so not to be sent out to fill them, ie creating more work for themselves. GET REAL." Are you trying to say that road labourers on their way to fill in potholes are going to go out of their way to report more potholes when they get back to the depot????? Aye - Get Real ! What world are you living in?
