King of clubs’ multi-screen cinema plan

by Sarah Swain

NIGHTCLUB tycoon Stefan King wants to launch a multi-screen cinema in Glasgow's South Side.

The businessman's G1 group is in talks over returning a building in Shawlands to its former use as a picture house.

The site contains The Cell nightclub, which is no longer in operation.

It once housed The Elephant Cinema, which closed in 1960.

G1, which owns a string of pubs and restaurants in the city, today confirmed it had already been granted a licence from Glasgow's licensing board for four cinema screens, each seating around 100 people.

But a spokesman stressed discussions and plans were still at an early stage.

It says a cinema is "just one of the options" for the site in Kilmarnock Road.

The firm already runs the successful Grosvenor Cinema in Ashton Lane in the West End.

A G1 spokesman said: "It's very early days. It's one of a number of options we are looking at for the site.

"Obviously we have experience running a cinema and The Grosvenor has been a fantastic success."

The White Elephant cinema, later named The Elephant, opened in 1927 and was designed by H Barnes. It also housed a ballroom before it closed in 1960.

Pollok councillor David Meikle was sitting on the licensing board when the entertainment licence was granted.

He said: "I think it would be great for the South Side and for the residents of Shawlands.

"I think they would try to create the atmosphere of The Grosvenor, where people can go in with a drink."

A city council spokeswoman said an application for four cinema screens was approved in January by the licensing board but so far no planning application had been made.

The South Side was once home to numerous cinemas including The Casino, Cathcart Picture House, The Embassy, Shawlands Picturehouse and the Palladium.

Mr King transformed the former Waverley Cinema in Moss Side Road into the Tusk bar and Waverley Tea Rooms five years ago.

And why shouldn't the South Side have a cinema?

Why is everything always City Centre, City Centre, like everywhere else in the city is non applicable to entertainment and nice places to go or visit?

Funny that, apart from a good few places to eat and drink, the west end is as dead as a do-do, same applies to Shawlands.

Everywhere else is not evem worth talking about

Welcome to Glasgow

'cos the city centre is generally quick and easy to get to, TMC. And there people will go is where the money is to be made.

The West End dead as a do-do? Err... even discounting cafes/pubs/restaus (and why would you?) what about the great architecture, good parks, several museums/galleries, sprinkling quirky books/clothing/other stores?

And the cinema.

Totally behind this cinema idea. Will bring more money and people to Shawlands. A win/win scenario. Now all King has to do his drop his applcation for the Botanic Gardens nightclub, and he will be sweet with Glaswegians again.

Are tourists welcome?

Not if Last Bus can help it Brad!

The grosvenor is a small cimema which I'm sure only shows films that don't appeal to the wider public.

Apart from that, I did mention that there was a good few places to eat and drink as you so kindly noted.

I suppose the Nirvana that is the West End isn't that bad in comparison to Shawlands.

My humble apologies to you Sir but it could always be better!

Yes, it could be better, and it might even have been better when there were fewer "style bars" and estate agents. Sadly though, it is - as you noted - streets ahead of most parts of Glasgow.

Great idea!

Yea, this is good for Shawlands - it'll bring people down and dispel any preconceptions they might have about the place.

I lived in the west end for 6 years without setting foot south of Ibrox and always thought that the further south I went, the worse it would get. The first time I visited Shawlands was to see a flat to rent, and I decided there and then to get it.

If offered a free place in either the West End of Shawlands, it'd be the latter, without a doubt!

Excellent. I hate those big chain cinemas and only go to the Grosvenor if I fancy seeing films. I live in Shawlands, so the sooner the better. I like the G1 group venues and am not against them at all. G1 - world domination but in a nice way :-)

I was lead to think that a new big cinema was being built in Pollok at the silverburn centre . If this is true do we need to cinema halls so near to each other

Nah, I don't agree TMC.

The West End is pretty much non-stop any time I go there and I've been there quite a few times over the last few months.

Shawlands is also pretty good. Good restaurants, pubs and clubs and it has a good vibe about it. I think a cinema in Shawlands would be an excellent idea.

Yes Ian, well a little further down the page, there is a wee convo which goes further into the discussion.

Definitely more needs to be done!

I lived in Shawlands in the 50/60's and remember the Elephant well. There were two other cinemas, The Embassy and The Waverley so a new 4 screen facility would only be returning to those days. We have many large multi-screen movie houses here but one has to, for the most part, go by car. I recall there was a bus stop about 20 yards from the Elephant and with the population within walking distance I can see nothing but success.

Yes, we had some mentally backward people running the show in Glasgow back in the day.

Then you had your shady MP's at Westminster

Its good to see a bit of what has been missing for many years, if Mr King does go ahaead with the intended plan.

I think this is a very positive development for Shawlands. As a long time Shawlands resident there has always been an excellent selection of bars and restaurants and the addition of this cinema will hopefully lead to further regeneration of some of the shabbier areas, particularly on Kilmarnock Road.

If only something could be done about the hideous Shawlands Arcade and the derelict shops in and around it...

There was talk a while back about the redevelopment of the Arcade, Bob. Not sure where it's got to though. These big enclosed shopping centres haven't tended to be a success in the longer-term.
