AROUND 40 firefighters tackled a major blaze at a former bingo hall which saw nearby pubs evacuated.

The blaze broke out shortly before 11pm last night in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire, and crews were still on the scene this morning.

The disused hall has been ravaged by the fire and inquiries were under way to find out how it started.

Police said traffic restrictions were in place around Cross Arthurlie Street and Robertson Street while a fleet of fire engines and police vehicles remained at the scene.

Crews were still trying to bring the blaze under control and they were monitoring properties close by in case the fire spread.

Firemen on hydraulic ladders poured thousands of gallons of water on the blazing building.

High reach appliances were visible across the town while smoke still billowed from the former bingo hall.

A fire brigade spokesman said: "Crews were sent to the scene around 10.50pm.

"They were immediately met with a well developed fire within the building.

"The blaze was tackled externally on three fronts utilising both aerial and ground firefighting tactics.

"The adjoining premises have been evacuated and are being protected by covering jets to make sure that the fire does not involve these areas." The immediate vicinity has been closed off by the police to all traffic.

A Strathclyde Fire & Rescue Investigation Team are on hand to carry out an investigation with the police when the fire has been brought under control.

Investigation teams will only be allowed into the building when it is declared safe.
