Declining city hotel occupancy rates, public services for vulnerable groups cutback, job threats to the IFSD, u-turns on parks' strategy, fears of sex traffic fears during the Diddy Games, rising violent crime in the city centre, council jobs at threat, city schools performance record the worst in the country... [italic]and we're supposed to be worried about somebody dropping a fag in the street because there are no suitable bins available[/italic] ???

Unbelieveable.
What next, someone sneezing in a threatening manner?
Glasgow City Council - an absolute joke.

A discarded cigarette butt may not seem like much but they all mount up and make the city look dirty.

It's bad enough the pc brigade trying to marginalise smoking in public places, now they want to blame smokers for litter!

Criminalising people in Glasgow for dropping a cigarette end is a bit exterme. Meanwhile the East and North of the city are being run by mafia type families running drugs and guns.
Glad to see the police and GCC have their priorities right.
These litter wardens have not made one blind bit of difference. Glasgow's still a manky hole.

The reason for the litter laws is to stop the city being a "manky hole."
It's all very simple, use the bins provided, if they are full, take your litter home!

If I was in court for this crap, I would cite SNP MSP Sandra White as a witness to the fact that bins were too full to use, as she was quoted in the ET in December last year saying:
"I saw lots of people trying to use bins, but couldn't because they were too full."
As for taking fag ends home - GEEZABREK!

Eleven other people failed to turn up for their court hearings - all for dropping cigarette butts - and warrants were issued for their arrest.
Way to go Glasgow council, take more police officers off the street tracking down these master criminals..
Its also so easy to give a false name & for somebody innocent to be dragged up for this, not a lot of thought put into this idea, was there Mr Purcell

Call it "petty", and that the cooncil/police shld be focused on the big stuff but at the end of the day I really cant see why you would want to throw rubbish/fag ends on the street... surely people can have a little bit of pride and decency and find a bin to chuck their garbage. You would think it was like asking folk to solve a very difficult math problem..its not, "you have rubbish, locate a bin, deposit in bin, problem solved"... come one people it aint that hard!

the fact of the matter is there are 2 reasons why glasgow is in the state it is,
1. the majority people DO NOT give a monkeys they have no pride and certainly no decency, which is visable everyday of the week! they also were never taught by their parents how to use a bin when outside there own house.
2. companies and shops in glasgow are the biggest culprits, the amount of overflowing bins and bags that line the streets in town is a total disgrace! i was in town yesterday and on union st, queen st, is minging.

It's quite amazing how pathetic some people can be. If it's your litter/ fag ends then take responsibility for it. Why is it the councils responsibility to have someone walk along behind you picking up your rubbish. What else do you want, a Direct and Care package so can get someone round to wipe your ar*e or do you still get you mammys to do that for you.

Do we not have street-sweepers anymore? Extrapolating the logic, surely uber-clean streets would create redundancies?
Let's face it, it's not as if you have to wade through inches of garbage on the streets. A few fag butts and crisp packets here and there, big deal. If that's all you have to worry about in life, you're not doing too badly.
It's called rubish. It is there, it always has been there, it always will be there. Even if every single person in the city used bins, there would still be random rubbish flying about the streets whiped up from business, vehicles and so on and blown around the streets, thereby necessitating the need for street-sweepers, so what's the problem?
For me, I think it is more worrying that a national newspaper is producing 'name and shame' propaganda.

No one is disagreeing. Glasgow is a manky dirty middin, it always has been. You know when you're entering Glasgow with all the litter on the grass verges beside the motorways.
But if resources are finite as the council would have us believe then perhaps those resources should be channelled in another direction, ie education on littering and employing street sweepers rather than street snoopers. What kind of society are we leaving behind us?
I'd rather GCC had a complete gutting of the Glasgow area, cleaning up and then if people see it clean, they might keep it that way. But when you see that state it's in, then it's no wonder the morons in society leave their litter behind them.

Schools have been telling children that dropping litter is wrong for decades. There has been endless public campaigns. The reason these don't work is people like you who think it is the councils job to clearup litter. If people didn't drop it we wouldn't have the problem. The only way stop this is punishing the individals responsible and force them to take responsibility for their acions. If people don't want a nanny state they need act like grown ups in the first place.

Well, obviously that education is wrong. But to be honest I was taught by my mother that dropping litter was wrong and even today wouldn't dream of it.
It's all about how you're brought up. And if the moron adults think it's okay, then moron children will too. But the GCC approach is all wrong.
Perhaps if they emptied a few bins every now and then, litter would not be overflowing out of them. (Mr Purcell please note that as the bin in Cumbernauld Road at the bingo hall hasn't been emptied for weeks).

Dropping litter has always been an offence in the eyes of the law but come on people we are talking fag butts.
All those on here who agree that it is right to prosecute those who have dropped a butt can we then take it that you live your life without breaking any laws whatsoever?..
We are making criminals out of people who probably without thinking tossed a bit of paper or cig butt away..
Surely the sensible thing would be to caution these folk instead of dragging them through the courts, wasting thousands of £s not to mention court & police hours..
So when you house is robbed or car stolen dont be complaining when the old Bill dont have enough man power or the courts let the offender off because they are too busy dealing with litter louts..

Exactly. It's utterly pitiful. Anyone who has done jury duty recently would have their eyes open to the amount of scum getting away with all sorts.

Zero tolerance of all crime should be the policy- look at the success in New York. It bamboozles me that people are actually complaining about an attempt to clean up the streets of the city. These people have utter contempt for a council that is attempting to make head way into this city's extensive problems. May i ask, if you are the fountain of all solutuons why dont you get off your a*** and share your inherent ontological understanding of the route to Utopia?

People who discard fag buts on to the pavement deserve to be fined,i smoke but always throw my fag out the car window on to the road where it does no harm.If more people were as considerate as myself our pavements would be much cleaner

I am sure the wardens would have a field day out here! It is becomming an achievement to take a dog for a walk without getting a cut paw from footpaths paved with broken bottled glass and although dog owners are expected to clear up after their pets, here we find school paths paved with 'manure' courtesy of a nearby riding school whose riders seem quite oblivious and unconcerned to the health hazards their steeds present as they leave a token of their last meal behind them,
I am all for some-one starting a glue factory next door to the riding stables there's no shortage of raw materiel there

Well done the Labour Council on this issue delivering what people want. The few usual apologists on here for people who are criminals and if locking them up is what will get the message across to them so be it.

As an ex-Glaswegian now living in Holland, it saddens me to read this. Might help if they emptyed the litter bins a bit more often so that people could actually use them. They manage to do so in so many other European cities. But wasting Police time on people discarding cigarette ends seems totally over the top. Surely their time would be better served trying to control real crime. No longer allowed a fag with your pint, and now it's not safe to smoke in the street. As much as I enjoy my visit's home, I'm glad I don't live there any more. Nanny state, nanny city!

Frank you div what are you on about it costs money to lock up and criminalise people who will then be unable to get a job cause they couldnt find a bin. Sack glasgow's **** council they are useless and a waste of public money. Lets hire cleaners instead of litter wardens and police instead of parking attendants and speed cameras.

I see from the list that some are 'visitors' to the city, what are their areas like regards litter?

As some on here write rubbish I suppose its understandable they cannot see the problem..
I cannot believe that so many apologists for litter louts exist..
Some time ago speaking to a gentleman who worked cleaning up graffiti from paint spraying, quoted in company ;
They supplied the neds with the paint in the east end to keep himself and others in the job of restoring ... True. The response from myself and many others was we haven't seen him since... "Public amenity"..
It wouldn't surprise me if he takes part on this comment board at a guess he is at best 1 of 6 ..
