Having Glasgow and Edinburgh under the same ownership makes no sense, hopefully GLA gets sold to a company such as Manchester Airport PLC, which has a progressive vision of how to run and a successful indepedent major airport...

But how likely is it that BAA would sell off Glasgow to a competitor who would offer deals to airlines that would then threaten their golden goose on the east coast? Is it not more likely that they'll keep Glasgow shackled and dispose of Aberdeen?

I reckon it would probably be Aberdeen airport that would be sold off and Glasgow and Edinburgh airports that are kept. What really needs to happen though is for Prestwick Airport to expand and be upgraded in order to give these airports a run for their money.

The Commission isn't really interested in Aberdeen - the competition issues don't really apply there (no nearby airport to compete with).

Selling Glasgow or Edinburgh might end the monopoly that sees thousands of Scots forced to fly via London or Manchester just to get to Europe - clocking up passenger numbers and shopping business for the English airports in the process. It's ludicrous that we can fly across the Atlantic from Scotland but can't apparently make it to the likes of Frankfurt or Zurich. Someone's keeping it that way to line their own pockets - and it's time they were forced to stop.

The report makes for very interesting reading but nothing that we don't already know.
The airlines do not see Glasgow v Edinburgh as a problem as they both cater for different catchment areas. They did say that Glasgow was competing with Prestwick though and suggested that one of the main reasons that Glasgow has less Euro city destinations and Polish city destinations is due to Ryanair and Wizzair over in Prestwick. Edinburgh wasn't an issue for people in Glasgow and very few use Edinburgh from the west of Scotland - going by the survey conducted by the Competition Commission.
Either Edinburgh or Glasgow will probably go

These two routes operate from Edinburgh Airport. I believe a second 'Frankfurt' (Hahn) service from Ryanair will start later in the year

You can also fly those routes from Prestwick via Ryanair. The difference between Glasgow and Edinburgh is that 'Glasgow-Prestwick' handles all the Ryanair and cargo business that BAA-Glasgow doesn't for various reasons...

True, a Lufthansa service operates from Edinburgh to Frankfurt - but, living five minutes from Glasgow Airport, it would be nice to have one from there too.
I searched for a flight to Zurich from Edinburgh only recently and the only service left at about 6am - hard to make check-in for that one by public transport from western Glasgow.
The current Frankfurt Hahn service from Prestwick has a similar problem, in that it dumps you in the middle of nowhere (as usual, Ryanair airports are named after the nearest big city, even if it's virtually in another country like 'Dusseldorf' Weeze) at about midnight, meaning the money you saved on the flight is then wasted on a hotel unless you fancy sleeping in the airport or Frankfurt central station (to which there is at least a bus service) while you wait for the first morning train to your actual destination.
It's possible the new service you talk about will fix that - but it's the first I've heard of it. Where did you see it advertised?
Oh, and Weegielady, the city of Glasgow at least was sold off by the council long ago - and now they're trying to get it back by closing down the pawnbroker who holds the ticket, as recently reported on this very website. The excuse about the new hotel is just a front...

FMJ True, a Lufthansa service operates from Edinburgh to Frankfurt - but, living five minutes from Glasgow Airport, it would be nice to have one from there too.
The correction followed your post in which these two routes were mentioned in a specifically Scottish context. I would agree that Glasgow Airport needs far more scheduled routes that appeal to (primarily) business travellers but seem to have left it a bit late as there is now an established and powerful network to the east plus a less powerful one to the south of Glasgow Airport. The charter market is in decline and Glasgow Airport needs to attract business on scheduled carriers just to make up for its charter losses. Is splitting up Glasgow and Edinburgh airports the answer? I don't know as it would depend on the vision of a new owner and the state of the local economy of each area.

You should find the Ryanair Edinburgh / Frankfurt Hahn service on their web site.
I believe it is operating now but not daily. Some criticise Ryanair's choice of airports but just as not every passenger on a Heathrow flight will be ending their journey in London, not every Ryanair passenger will be heading for the city of Frankfurt. The Hahn service ex Prestwick seems to be a fairly successful one which demonstrates to their detractors that Ryanair must be doing something right.

You are, of course, right - there's no guarantee a new owner of either airport would necessarily be better than BAA. But something needs to be done to break the present deadlock, even if it's forcing the current owner to offer better service and more choice. The only time I ever get to fly direct from Glasgow is if I'm going to England or am on a flight chartered by a holiday company.
And I'm not criticising Ryanair per se - it's just that, at the moment, their services don't offer the timing/destinations I'd like (Nuremberg would be great if any representatives are reading this - it is our twin city, after all). I'm far more annoyed at the likes of BA, which allegedly has the resources to offer exactly what I (and presumably many others) want but which chooses to herd Scots through an English airport instead.
