Duo bang the drum for launch of piping festival

IT'S used to hosting performances from legends such as Oasis, The Smiths and Justin Timberlake.

But this year Glasgow's famous concert venue the Barrowland welcomes the cream of the world's bagpipers and traditional musicians.

Piping Live; The Glasgow International Piping Festival and sister event the World Pipe Band Championships will return to the city in August.

And performers will take to the stage at the East End venue to mark the end of the events.

Called the After Worlds Shindig, the August 16 celebration will include performances from modern folk band Deaf Shepherd, "the boy band of traditional Scottish music" Skerryvore and Canadian band Beolach.

Festival organiser Finlay MacDonald said: "The Barrowland is known as a really good music venue which is what we are trying to promote."

The World Pipe Band Championships at Glasgow Green on August 16 is the highlight of the world piping calendar.

It was officially launched by pipers at Glasgow Airport, to mark the 8000 performers expected to descend on the city from as far afield as Europe, Australia, Canada, USA, Asia and New Zealand.
