So, it is actually phsically possible to run a subway in Glasgow at 8am on a Sunday morning? Amazing. How about Sunday evenings?

Of course had this information & announcement been made available some weeks and months ago -many more people could of trained and been part of the 10 K Run.
Its easy enough for SPT to make this announcement so late in the day, but its hardly groundbreaking nor earth shattering news.
what we need to see is SPT opening the Subway at the hours which we see buses run until.
And at the level of service and reliability which the Subway must be brought up to for it to be sustainable.
This is, it would seem another gimmick - token gesture to try and see if the demand will be there, should more money be invested into increasing the opening hours on a more permanent basis.
For me this idea cannot come soon enough!
Common sense is clearly not something SPT or its staff come by very often.

Jeeso the unionised staff working in the subway think that will get the backing of the public, go one better and open drag the Glasgow subway system, the oldest in europe into the 21st century and open up the stations on sunday evenings to midnight and early in the mornings at seven am, seven days a week. What a laughing stock.

It's not just the Subway trains that run backwards as well as forwards through the tunnels under our city.
The staff of Glasgows antequated, 111 year old toy - town train system are also very rigid in their thinking.
Try having a conversation to subway staff about the modernisation needed to bring Glasgows Subway up to the 21'st century standards, and many of the staff appear to be unable to see the need for drastic modernisation.
Yes their jobs are at risk from modernisation also, but - finishing early on Sundays to spend with their families is a perk which has gone on far too long.
If Glasgows Subway staff want to keep their jobs, then they need to start engaging with the public and stop being so protective of SPT, its management and what it stands for.
This one off initiative is a far cry from how the Subway should really be - if it is to stand any chance of competing with its Eurpopean counterparts.

Ever thought of employing more staff to split the shifts. Imagine, the new world of People Power: where we all obviously have none, slaves to our work, like hamsters on a tread wheel connected to a generator.Could this be People Power's true vision? . As for 111 year old subway, were you asleep when the renovation work was carried out.

Thanks leesome,
Clearly your pro - SPT stance is admireable, but nonetheless foolhardy.
Leesome you only need to see the so well executed arguements put forwards by Blll Forbes, and his[bold] www . subway 2020 .com vision. [/bold]
But, any refurbishment or renovation on the grand scale of things has been so insignificant, that even with the £8 million invested in Glasgows subway it will take a he*ll of alot more for people to want to make the switch, or merely alternate between the use of the subway, & leaving their cars at home.
As Bill Forbes so rightly put it:[italic] "I think the SPT is probably winning the battle of doing nothing and ignoring public outcry. They are immune to criticism and are answerable to no one. Indeed, I think the public are generally tired of the same old, same old with the Subway and in that Glasgow tradition we just get on working with what we have got."[/italic]
The system is now a sick joke and the public are fed up with all of these grandiose schemes which they come up with every year but knowing they have no chance of ever seeing the light of day.

I am here People Power, I’ve just got in and am catching up with things. (Well, a friend of mine actually phoned and said I was being mentioned in the discussion page.)
Yes, it looks like the SPT have done it again – making great headlines whilst the real problems of the Subway are masked in a misty spin. But Pete, Shaggy and you PP are dead right – if the Subway can open early on this occasion (and at no charge!!) why can’t it be done other times?
But leesomes’ “hamsters on a tread wheel” is a bit off target. It is not the SPT staff and management who are subjected to this but it is us – the Subway users who are going round and round complaining about the Subway but not being listened to. Maybe it’s time for a change and we should try more direct action.
Thanks for the kind words about the web site PP but perhaps it needs to be revised and brought up to date. My big point about the web site was that the Subway should be improved as it currently stands then extended – unfortunately the message appears to dwell on the latter point. I suggest that within the next week I put a new emphasis on the web site – concentrating on the existing service and facilities. I will make some FoI requests to find out exactly how much maintenance goes on in the Subway between the hours of 6.00pm and 11.00pm on a Sunday. This is the big excuse for not extending the Sunday service. I will then petition Parliament to ask the question about extended hours. Meanwhile we can still lobby on the day to day questions such as escalators not in service, surly staff, management of the assets, etc. (BTW – message to Subway staff – this is not an excuse to have a go at you. You guys operate the system; you will know the ins and outs better than us – join us and give us some insider views.)
I would like to turn subway2020.com into an organised pressure group – democratically formed and hopefully offering a voice for the Subway user. It appears there are at least two vacancies on the SPT Board for lay members – does anyone fancy tea and biccys at Consort House?
Any chance of a meet up and discussion on this?

Bill,
Thanks for your words of wisdom we've all come to expect from you. I always know I can count on you to back up the arguement for SPT to get their finger out their knicker elastic, and start doing some real work to benefit us Subway users.
The spin, rhetoric, long drawn out stories of what SPT's plans are, along with the endless stories of them in the E.T. get very tiring.
What people want is to see real improvements, that people will come to benefit from. Not token gestures of new tasteful orange facelifts on ticket machines & stations signage.
The appearance of Subway stations can be deceptive, and some people can be fooled not by how much, but by how little work has been done.
I am all for meeting up and discussing the visions of those frequent users and travellers on the subway - (including myself) but - not so sure about the idea of the SPT Board Membership.
Sounds as exciting, or should I say dire as the idea of any such committee at Dalian House Headquarters, where I'm sure the Board (bored) meetings I'm sure are just as dry, dull and un-inspiring.
But, I'm up for an insight into the running of SPT - even if its just to confirm my suspicions.

Bill dont give us your usual pish you always attack the staff.
Do you honestly think the staff have a say! The staff know and have always expected longer Sunday opening times. You and all your little followers just think oh its the staff. Really get a grip. The subway needs the maintenance done no matter what they need that time as the subway is so old.
The extra hours wouldnt change the staff's life at all. They know its coming but CANT fight against it would just be brought into place. The days of the unions are gone. 90 days notice and thats it. If the management really wanted it, it would of brought in a long time ago. Nothing to do with the staff

GET A LIFE,
I can't speak for Bill, but the staff at SPT and Subway stations must also modernise their way of thinking, in line for changes ahead.
If they think that not speaking out about what they are unhappy about, when its so clear to see on their faces is the right way - then fine.
But - I can see right through alot of the unahappy staff's faces on the Subway, and some of the defensive responses I've had when mentioning the need for upgrading the Subway are stark.
Its not just the Subway, and its rolling stock ; time-tables ; vending machines ; and so caleld upgraded P.R. - tannoy system that need a lift. . . .
The Subway staff need a holiday, a change of scene, or something to re-evaluate their lives, and see that being so much of a clique, insulated, inward thinking, and defensive does not draw the public towards them.
If they are to have any kind of say on what goes on within the job they work in - they must all fight for their union to back them in what the majority of them stand for.
Everyone else in other situtations has to do the same, Glasgows decrepit Subway is no exception.
If the staffs mentalities along with Glasgow Subway is not to be a laughing rolling stock in the years to come - prior to 2014 then things had better change, and this first £8 million stage has not come a moment too soon.

If you can't intercept this thread with a proper arguement to substanciate why you think the way you do, then a weak personal attack is the easy option.
Lame, and with no substance.
What reason have you for standing up for SPT ?
Say what you want, but I think you've forgotten about peoples right of freedom of speech.
Also, you clearly don't engage very much with SPT - Subway staff, or you'd see the way their unfortunately, and almost allegedly "gagged" by their management.
Their perception may be based on fear of losing their jobs, or too many changes within the terms and conditions of them, they remain far more tight lipped.
Surely its not the same anymore, things are changing, improvements are potentially afoot.
But, staff need to up their game, and bring their line of thinking into the 21st Century.
Thats hardly too much to ask.
Whats really disgusting is all the spin, and rhetoric, empty promises and sums that can never add up - people getting their hopes up at the thought of having a modernised Subway!
Lets be realistic here, and stop this pussyfooting around.
If SPT and it's Subway staff aren't as insulated and cut off from other modes of transport, and subway services accross the UK - lets see them being more communicative and open with the public, not as cagey as I've found so many staff being.
