Sydney Devine, and Bob Winter prove they belong in the west

by Brian Beacom

SCOTLAND'S rhinestone cowboy certainly has the sparkle back in his eyes.

Singing legend Sydney Devine, 67, was delighted to be invited to lunch at the City Chambers.

Lord Provost Bob Winter and Lady Provost Sheena Winter organised the event to celebrate Sydney's 50 years in entertainment. The Lord Provost said: "It's a privilege to welcome Mr Devine and his wife Shirley to the City Chambers.

"I know his music is loved all over the world and that Glaswegians, particularly, are among his most ardent fans."

Sydney is one of the great survivors of Scottish showbiz. The singer from Cleland, Lanarkshire, has had a glittering career. And he is determined not to put his cowboy boots up and retire, with a two-day stint confirmed for the Pavilion Theatre in November.

That is in spite of having major heart surgery last year to remove a blood clot.

He said: "I was very honoured my wife and I met the Lord and Lady Provost of Glasgow. It's equivalent to meeting royalty.

"My only regret in my life is that I wasn't born in Glasgow. Glaswegians are the greatest people. They have a real warmth of spirit and have always supported me throughout my career."

Probably the most parochial thing the parochial ET has printed yet.

Scotland's main city deserves a better quality evening paper than this load of rubbish.

What an embarassment, outsiders reading this (online and in the printed edition) must think we are very hic and small town.

For God's Sake ET, get a grip and give us a proper, quality newspaper which reflects the status of our country's only metropolitan city. Not a second rate tabloid which embarasses Glasgow and half the population of Scotland who live within its orbit.

Have you never read the Manchester Evening News, Dublin evening paper or thelondonpaper (though not the Evening Standard (aka the Daily Mail in the evening) or London Lite which are crap and veyr parochial)?

John Hamilton is, in my opinion, quite right.
The Evening Times is becoming a pasteboard for any press release that is sent out. Cut and paste.
If I see one more front page with a "new development" (complete with the artist's impression) I will scream.
Where is the comment, investigation, insight, JOURNALISM?
Have you so little respect for your readers that you are happy to serve up pap every day?
