I could tell you of others places that flout the law to underagers. Its the way in which these shopkeepers sell to the underage so arrogantly that gets me.
The ease at which underage drinkers get hold of their drink through either older looking friends, fake I.D. putting make up on to look older, the means are endless.
I don't see the licenced premises tighten up their laws nearly enough to satisfy me that enough is being done.

Ive said this before,If you know an off-sales is selling drink illegally let him/her know that you will personally report the matter to the licensing board along with any evidence you have.I done this and the local off-sales proprietor ceased from selling types of cheap alcopops and cider. No hassle,no threats or aggro. And the local group disorder did reduce considerably.

They do it in such an underhand, and furtive way its hard to prove, unless they are caught in a Police - Licencing Board sting and the proof is right there, that under-aged folk have just managed to buy the drink.

Raise the drinking age to 21 and ID everyone. Only government ID's (driving licences etc.) should be accepted, heavy fines/bans for shopkeepers/pubs selling to underage AND/OR intoxicated patrons.

"McLean escaped a tougher ban of nine months after councillors voted three to two, with one abstention, in favour of a six-month suspension."
WTF the police have taken a lot of time and effort to get this shop keeper and a councillor abstains from the vote!!
are they related in some way to the shop keeper?
not sure which way to vote? - well ask your constituents! and then represent them.
....or are they on a waiting list for a spine donor?

Re the councillors abstension I find this incredible in view of the fact the licensee was convicted in court. He should consider his position regards his duty to his constituents.

The Councillor who abstained should be na,ed and shamed - for the electorate to decide if they are worthy of their position in power the next time around.
If the people - electorate had to hand, and acted all the facts and details of the councillors right and wrong doings when going to vote things would be very different.

I work in an Off Licence and take loads of abuse from people when I ask for ID. The amount of people who enter the premises trying to buy for the underagers is on the increase. The police should start charging these people as I and my workmates can only do so much. Try putting yourself in our shoes and then you will see how difficult it really is to ask for ID from some Hoodie or junkie who tells you that you are dead when you leave the shop for not giving them their drink or fags.

What is the point of raising the drinking age to 21? The problems of under-agers will remain the same. At present we hear of kids as young as 10-11-12, i.e. kids who are obviouslly under-age getting hold of booze. Increasing the drinking age to 21 will make no difference whatsoever.

The people in Mount Vernon Glasgow were successful in getting a liquer license renewal stopped for a local shop because it was selling drink to underage, even when another local shop applied for a license, it was challenged and refused.; a year later the original shop has closed. This shows that selling alcohol was imporant to the owners of these shops.

WE in the states have an over 21 law on drinking, and we still have problems with some stores selling to kids. Also, any "pal" over 21 can buy the booze then give it to the kids. It does not stop. A biggggg problem.
