As I've said here before you are not comparing like with like: there is a difference between jumping into the Kelvingrove to [bold]use the free toilets[/bold] and forking out £11.00 to get into Edinburgh Castle.
Just wait until next year when [bold]Kelvingrove punters will have to pay for the tacky Dr Who exhibition[/bold], then it will be like with like, and [italic]let's just see how popular the Kelvingrove is then with the paying public[/italic]!!!

The visit Scotland statistics compare Kelvingrove with Edinburgh Castle - note the distinction between free and pay-to-see. So keep what remains of yer hair on, Sydney.
Anyway, well done Kelvingrove. I'm fairly confident this is a drop in figures compared to last year (I'm sure it was above 3 million when it re-opened) - but all new museums experience a drop off in visitors after they reopen. I understand that the museum gets a lot of repeat visits. The new cafe is great and is very family friendly. This is an attraction in itself as well as the priceless treasures upstairs.
Finally, I imagine the Dr Who exhibition will [bold]boost[/bold] visitor numbers. Temporary , pay to enter exhibitions were regular before the museum was refurbished and people travel from further away to visit them. All these visitors are likely to see the rest of the museum. Personally, I can't wait for the Dr Who exhibition.

Although I'm not one of them, Dr Who is watched by a good number of people. Are these people tacky? Are the people who want to visit this exhibition tacky?
Also, even when people have to pay for this exhibition, I don't think its comparing like for like... the Kelvingrove museum will still be free, however, only those who are interested in Dr Who will have to pay.
I hardly think that the Dr Who exhibition is expected to be competing with Edinburgh Castle in terms of visitor numbers.

Would that be a million or more visits to the toilet.
How many gallons would that be.
I know you all like statistics.

If anyone from Culture & Sport Glasgow is reading this can you please make the security staff at Kelvingrove aware that there is a man called Sydney who spends his time standing watchng people go to the toilet.

It's not just the fact that one is free and the other isn't it's also about the accuracy of the figures. At Edinburgh they'll know the numbers of tickets sold but at Kelvingrove there's no-one counting the numbers going in. Even if they had some kind of system where a small infra-red beam is cut at the door every time someone comes through they would have to allow for the fact that people can wander outside for some fresh air (or ciggie) and then wander back in - which I've done myself.

Meriwether, you're an idiot and a naysayer of everything. It's laughable that most of the 2.23m visitors went in to use the free toilet.
Kelvingrove isn't exactly a convenient location to get to just to "use the free toilets". If you're that concerned get the toilet roll expenditure from Culture and Sport Glasgow under the freedom of information act.

do they have a flushing toilet that can clock up the times that the toilet is flushed, or the door opens.....or do they have a hidden camera to keep an eye out for sub culture mischeif?

Sydney Miserywitter has surpassed himself. For once in your life accept a "good news" story about Glasgow at face value and celebrate like the rest of us.
Kelvingrove has been a huge succes and recognised as such almost unanimously.

As a point of interest I've always liked the large, white-tiled and scrupulously clean Gents toilet in the Kelvingrove Art Galleries. Odd that in nearly sixty five years of visiting I have yet to see a queue at any of the toilets. I've probably only had two pees in about sixty visits to Kelvingrove...am I missing something here? Tell all Sydney.
Incidentally, After spending £millions on the refurbishment, there's still only one Gents bog, for shame Glasgow, don't you know there's millions of people using it...more toilets please!

Well it's all silent on how they count the number of visitors going to Kelvingrove...and wonderful and busy though it is, as someone who lives nearby I don't believe that there are more than 6,000 people (on average each day visiting) that would be almost 800 an hour or one every four seconds.

I used to work For Glasgow museums, And I can confirm that the figures issued are well and truly fixed, Musuems in glasgow dont get anywhere near the numbers of visitors they claim, This is because the staff think that if the numbers are not high eneough they will shut the museum down i.e Scotland Street, The fact is the managment dont advertise the museums properly, which is a shame because we have a great collection!

Mike, sure, the numbers average out at about 1 visitor every 5 seconds. Of course, there are blips in the real numbers, such as visiting parties, constant school trips, the people who pour off the various sightseeing buses during the good weather, etc.
I'd guess that they count a couple of times a year, and extrapolate all-year numbers from that. Of course, it's easy to pick days when they know they're going to be extra-busy, to inflate the all-year numbers.
Even so, numbers or not, it's a busy little museum, and a joy to visit. I was neither backing nor attacking the numbers, merely Sydney's assertion that most visitors went in only to use the toilet.

The company and the staff of the self service tearoom should be wearing masks,I was charged £6.50 for 1 coffee, 1 tea, a muffin and a slice of apple tart the other day and they have the cheek to have a dish placed at the pay till for a tip, bloody rip off merchants.
ps. the tart was nice.

I am disgusted by the east coast bias demonstrated by these figures. Since they dont include the billion or so spent on that bird attracting parliment and even allowing west coast atrractions like brittania to be housed in edinburgh with government money to appeal to tourists and add to the britishness of the city. Never mind it was built in glasgow as there arent any shipbuilders in edinburgh worthy of their own sealegs. So lets pap it up in edinburgh sprucing up an area better known for being full of junkies internationally thanks to the great classic trainspotting. Not one tourist attraction in glasgow that you have to pay for until the dr what exhibition. The only other museum worth a mention in glasgow is the burrel and that was a private collection donated to an ungrateful council along with one of the best parks in europe. Where is the government money to make attractions that are worth visiting. I'll give you a clue it cost what a couple million or so to shorten the national logo to scotland is no bad and that was seen as money well spent compared to other efforts.
