Fans warned: Don’t turn up if you haven’t booked a seat

by Jonathan Paisley

THOUSANDS of Rangers fans with train tickets to Manchester could be turned away at Glasgow Central.

Virgin Trains have warned supporters who have bought tickets without seat numbers that there is little chance there will be any room for them on the packed trains.

More than 9000 seats have been snapped up for Manchester-bound services on May 13 and 14. The situation affects fans with Open or Saver tickets planning to travel to the Uefa Cup Final.

The train company will be operating a queue system at Central Station and fans with seat reservations will get priority boarding.

The problem for Virgin is they just don't know how many Open and Saver tickets have been bought since they are on sale across the UK Extra standing capacity will then be offered to passengers with advance tickets without allocated seats, with the others at the end of the queue, unlikely to be able to get on the train.

Virgin Trains spokesman Allan McLean said: "Our advice to passengers without a reserved seat is to take the ticket back and request a refund.

"We have decided to warn fans in advance rather than ruin their day by having them turn up and be disappointed by being unable to travel to the match.

"Anybody not holding a seat reservation runs the risk of not being able to travel on their preferred service."

Mr McLean added: "We will be doing everything we can on the day to try to accommodate everyone who wants to travel.

"We have 3000 seats out of Glasgow on Wednesday and we are running at capacity."

First Trans Pennine Express will also be running trains from Glasgow to Manchester.

Meanwhile, Rangers fans have booked almost every available hotel room in the north-west of England for next week's final.

Travelling supporters have filled an estimated 50,000 beds in Greater Manchester and nearly as many again in Blackpool - the resort that is fast turning into a base camp for the Scottish fans ahead of the clash with Zenit St Petersburg.

Tourism officials in Manchester yesterday admitted they were recommending Rangers fans look for accommodation as far away as Leeds.

Rangers fans were forced to compete for hotel rooms with mortgage advisers, who are holding a major conference in Manchester next week.

Thousands of supporters have chosen to go to Blackpool, which has 2000 hotels and guesthouses with space for 60,000 people.

Yes, just because you bought a train ticket doesn't necessarily mean you have any right to get on a train.

This country becomes more like a Third World nation every day.

Manchester is approx 50miles from Blackpool.

I expect that won't bother anyyone, I suspect a few Glasgow employers will have a lot of folk taking sickies lol

I suppose a lot of revenue will be coming to the North of England. thanks to gers fans

I am not a footy fan , I think it is a lot of crap and I have no interest at all in it

and the players are all loaded, be better for women if the fit men just played footie naked or something, lol, rating
s would go up!

its sad that football means alkies in many cases, out teh woodwork crawls the drunken hooligans(women too I suppose)

I guess am in the minority, in being more interested in supporting myself and my weans, but am hoping they all behave and have good fun and we don't hear of any arrests or fighting,I just want peace to reign, and a good reputation to follow glasgow footy fans, whoever they may be.

Please don't gies a showing up ! lol

a refund? from a train company? who is he kidding? when did this start? you would think that these people could organise enough trains to take these people out of glasgow

Not at all. Not a football fan, so am not interested. But should this really be the headline on the front page of a newspaper?

Has the world gone mad?

I have just looked on the Virgin Trains website and it is still allowing me to book tickets on trains from Glasgow to Manchester on the morning on Wednesday 14th May.

Surely they should remove this from their website if they don't have any spare seats on the trains.

does it say you are actually booking /reserving a seat as they say, folk who have a seat number get it, and then the other ticket holders who show up get on as space permits and any who dont fit on get their money back, ie if they bought one of those open tickets or saver ones.

folk must know now demand is high ,maybe coach would be better , to actually have a ticket with a seat number reserved and you are laughing as legally you paid for it.
Posted by: Victor, Milan on 12:13pm Fri 9 May 08
Doh..... eh we don't know how many tickets we have sold....come on who do you think you're kidding here. Get the stock in place to transport these folk down to Manchester no matter what it costs YOU. I really feel for the Rangers fans as they are doing all they can to stop them going to Manchester to enjoy their big day.

Also if Virgin are still advertising seats they should be jailed.

It was all Celtic Celtic Celtic 5 years ago, and quite rightly so.

Scots should be proud that one of their teams are in a euro final.

We may not have the resources and players like they have with the best league in the world over Hadrian's wall, but be proud all the same.

Let's hope this time the Scottish team comes back with the trophy.

As for Virgin trains, use the bus, or jump in a car with a couple of mates. The trains are a rip off anyway.

(also agree with the first post)

Manchester song moment if Rangers win.

"Champagne supernova."
"Love spreads"
"True faith"

Manchester song moment if they lose.

"Heaven knows I'm miserable now"
"Don't look back in anger"
"Stop crying your heart out"

Anymore?

Good luck to Rangers, put your rivalry to one side and cheer for Scotland.

"This Is The One"

(Stone Roses).

If they can track seats and, quote, they have sold out of allocated seating. Why cannot Virgin offer all other ticket holders a chance to register those saver tickets; bought on the cheap they could charge a booking fee for a guaranteed seat, then more carriages could be made available?

Only in the UK would it be such a hassle to travel 4 hours down the road, this would have been better organised and easier to arrange if the final had been held in most European countries.

As for getting money back, we all know only too well that train companies are in the pockets of labour and you have to fight hard to get anywhere so lets hope there are no issues with delayed or late trains.

The good old glasgow culture shows it ugly head, we can all work together fine until someone talks about the old firm.
Posted by: Bored at work, Glasgow on 2:29pm Fri 9 May 08
Not the train company's fault this time. If people are daft enough to think that an unallocated ticket would get them a seat are daft. As are the posters on here that think this is the case.

Hopefully those in this situation will wise up, take it on the chin and drive down.

See you there. Can't wait. WATP.

Yeah, I suppose common sense would dictate that paying for a ticket for a specific train wouldn't necessarily mean you actually get to travel on the train.. eh???

how many rangers fans here have tickets for the actual game let alone the train ?

One word of caution: Enjoy the drink but don't be tempted into a fight. Wouldn't the English Press just love that!

90,000 fans?

I thought it was 40,000. Did someone actually do a proper head count?

Was that using the Seville calculator? I wonder if the Manchester calculator exaggerates more than the Portugese version? They reckon up to 100,000 will travel down?

How do they know that for sure?

It's going to end up in a schoolboy squabble.

If 80,000 Rangers fans turn up at Manchester, the Celtic fans will say that they took 90,000, and so on, and so on, and so on.

As another long time Celtic fan who was also in Seville I wish the Gers all the best and hope the fans have as much fun in Manchester as we had in Seville, regardless of the outcome.I am coming home next Friday on holiday so hope there are lots of happy faces on the streets of Glasgow.

we are all fae Scotland here, (95% of posters)and I am glad to see everyone is sporting and pleased to be representing Glasgow. No room for any bigots or being in any way sectarian as we need to eradicate that crap .

Its ok to have a carry on and say 'so what happened to your team'etc , but most men I know who like football seem hell bent on just tormenting the other side and they act like wee weans, can't seem to handle there team not winning .It's a game and as such its a gamble who will win or lose.

Sadly, in every football following team there are hoodlums out to cause fights, give grief, getting drunk seems the harbinger in all the arrests made.

It suprises me in these worldy times of child abuse, wars , famine, etc, the money ploughed into football, the time and emotion , i wish , could be captured and better used to make a new Yorkhill unit or something that had meaning and depth.

Football supporting can be a bit shallow for me to digest, the ones who greet and take it far more serious than 'a game'.

I don't get it, but I say live and let live, even though I find it incredible how devasted folk can feel.

I wonder what pycchologists make of it all. In a way its good to be a supporter, as it unites people and there is a feeling of 'I belong here', but when its all wrong all those folk have multiple wallowing like the Diana princess of wales thing, where everyone wallowed publicly in grief(in England I mean) making men unashamed to have a wee wallow is a good thing in a way but for FOOTBALL???

Id rather go to wembley for Live Aid saving children, as a game of footie

so be happy folks :-)

I thought this was for commenting on Virgin trains, not for how many did or didn't get arrested in Seville.
All I know is I won't be getting lifted in Manchester if I ever make it there that is.
According to the people at central station & the Virgin booking line DO NOT turn up expecting to travel without a seat booked . They think that about 1 in 3 will be turned away, or will simply not make it to Manchester in time to see the game.
I bought a ticket for the 10am train, due in at 1pm. Now Its unlikely I'll leave Central till after 2pm and not make Manchester till near 6.
Mr Branson should be ashamed of his company, if you dont have the seats don't sell the tickets!

Jonny Bond wishes all rangers fans the best of luck and virgin and other train opperators the best of luck in organising their ticketing arrangements better in future. The only reason they can be forgiven in any way whatsoever is that celtics trip with the alledged 9 million or so celtic supporters that all managed to fit into the ground and surrounding buildings with a telly. Apparently every telly in lisbon had at least 60 tic fans behaving admirably and promoting scotland to the homeowners they displaced for the event. Anyway that mass exodus was a bonanza for flights from scotland not trains so they had no forewarning of the coming catastrophe as half of glasgow turn up with their screaming weans to be delivered on the day of the match to within walking distance of old trafford. Saver ticket holders who will by now be unable to book anything going manchester bound might have a small chance of getting something from watchdog telling the government who only watch the telly these days to find out what is happening. Assuming we brits still care about the least harmful form of transportation available why could they not have the greatest convoy of sleepers and everything that runs on tracks down to manchester and back after the final is over it would be an expression of britishness not seen in this land since the great evacuation of soldiers from hitlers advancing troops in anything afloat that could cross the channel. If one ticketholder misses the final he should be personally looked after by giving him free travel for life at least by the guilty train opperator. If one worker is unable to get back for work the next day with his ticket he should also be refunded his days wages but courts in this country are set up to allow ukranians to ban freedom of speech not to chastise the train opperators we set up an agency for that promptly forgetting its name and they are apparent by their absence of comment in this story.

I am so proud of my team, and if I can get to Manchester next week,I'll be there for the party!! Failing that, I'll be on the 62 to argyle street and spending the day in George Sq! When I bought my train tickets for Manchester the day after we qualified I was told that seats could not be booked at that time. I have telephoned again since and been told that there are no seats available to book. Now I hear that they are saying the train is oversold and we might get turned away if we haven't booked a seat. I have just been on the Virgin Trains website and they are still selling tickets for the train that I am booked on - how the hell can they get away with that?!!

But that's like every train. You buy tickets not from train companies but centrally. Hence you can use a Glasgow-Edinburgh ticket on GNER, and 3 Scotrail routes. Certain ticket types might only permit certain trains, but that's the price for cheaper tickets.

I remember turning up at Waverely with a ticket to get a GNER train to Fife. It was full by Inverkeithing and nobody could get on at Kirkcaldy!

Unlike other systems which automatically assign seats you buy a ticket for a journey (French and Swiss railways give you a seat number) we don't and so many different tickets can be sold. You can walk up and buy tickets to Manchester for any day, it probably won't even say a time on it!
