Once again Matheson is wrong! Glasgow Central Station has the worst crime figures in the city... are we going to close that down as well?
[quote]"I wish the traders had put as much effort into clearing it up in recent years as they are putting into presenting themselves as victims.[/quote]
Oh, so now we're ridiculing and castigating local people who try to stand up for their right to be heard and to defend their livelihoods; [bold]maybe if you had the courage[/bold] to stand up to the management of Selfridges in the way that these people stand up to an out-of-touch council coward, then there wouldn't be a huge decaying, derelict gap in the middle of your ward...

If we go by councillor Matheson's logic then they should close the homeless hostel beside the market. Secondly the traders should be able to take Network Rail and Glasgow council to court for loss of business and earnings. Blaming the traders for supposed "crime" that takes place in the area close to Paddys is not the fault of the traders, and legally Network rail and the council would have a hard time in court proving that. So to take away a peoples business on a falsehood that couldnt be proved in court is just a lawsuit waiting to happen. I look forward to Network Rail and glasgow council throwing away millions of pounds on a court case [bold]they will lose[/bold]

What an ignorant man! Why do these concillors seem to think we all want to aspire to living in "luxury" apartments in the sky (which is what the site is earmarked for). Whatever happened to community? Probably went the same way as decency and honour in the Council.

Arrogant sod. Since when was tackling crime the responsibility of traders????
[quote]The council now plans to replace the rundown market with arts and crafts shops and foreign food stalls.

EXACTLY - that's a bit closer to the truth.

You don't exactly have to be Columbo to work out who is committing these crimes or where they're from. Time for a clampdown (or closedown) on Hope House. I've not got particularly strong feelings about Paddy's either way, but putting in a few craft shops won't solve things.

I have bought some good quality DVD's from PAddy's and you can also get some great cheap bootlegs of many artists.
Its places like Zavvi and HMV that should be shut down.
£18 for a Beatles album.
[bold][italic]£18!!![/italic][/bold]
£18 for 32 minutes of music!
£18 for something that was released over 40 years ago!
I notice that these shops are getting emptier by the week. They'll be gone soon, they've been ripping people off for years.
I also came across a CD single that was released 10 years ago, £15!!!!! for 4 tracks!!

The last time I stuck up for Paddy's I was shot down in flames by arrogant snobs who were up their own bakey holes.
Come to think of it, those posters must be pally wi Matheson & Purcell.
Oh well, it seems ordinary people are scum, sorry traders, thos eposters will come and attack you as well for sticking up for what is perceived as the worst hovel in Glasgow, which I believe is not the case.
As Pete says, a few craft shops or some street cafe won't change the area! But Paddy's is a victim, wonder why?

...sorry ran out of time!
Let's just go back to what Matheson said:
[quote]Councillor Gordon Matheson said: "The area has the [bold]worst crime figures[/bold] in the city.[/quote]

[italic]Evening Times 15/01/08, following a city wide analysis of crime ststistics[/italic]
[quote]THE streets around [bold]Central Station[/bold] have again emerged as the most dangerous place in the city, our investigation shows.
Of the 232 beats in Strathclyde Police's A, C, E and G divisions, the gateway to Glasgow for tens of thousands of tourists and commuters has the most violent crimes.
Serious assaults, which form part of the serious violence group and include stabbings, were also highest in the area around Central Station.
The figures for that beat, however, do not include the train station, which is covered by British Transport Police.[/quote]
[quote]The beats with the most robberies and muggings were in the city centre, with [bold]Central Station[/bold] area again the worst.[/quote]
[quote]Worst violence recorded was around [bold]Central Station[/bold][/quote]
So once again I shall ask - are we going to shut down [bold]Central Station[/bold]?
Also:
[italic]Is Matheson going to publicly apologise for his lack of knowledge in a crucial area, and based on which he obviously made a flawed decision?
Is Matheson going to resign in light of this glaring incompetence?
Is Matheson going to resign over his inappropriate and offensive statement regarding people trying to save their livelihoods in the face of council misinformation and bullying?[/italic]

Paddy's market should have been closed many years ago it is an eyesore.
The Barras should also go. These markets are no longer needed. Shops are open 7 days a week and there are any number of car boot sales now.
The Trongate and Gallowgate need good quality shopping cafes and other up market developements. Glasgow city centre is no place for street traders and barrow boys

And by the way I would rather walk thru Central Station than Paddy's market. Few if any wander thru Paddy's Market vicinity after dark.
If there is any trouble around the Central Station then it must be when the clubs come out in the early hours when the late night drunks head for taxis as it looks very safe when the staion is open

Sorry, but the traders themselves need to take some responsibility for the crime that goes on within the market. Why is it that each police raid results in huge numbers of goods being confiscated? (Barras included). This is not an innocent crime with some guy selling a couple of knock-off DVDs, but it is generally well organised criminal activity.
Why is it only now that the traders are saying they "would take a zero-tolerance policy on illegal trading."? The Police and council can only do so much, but the traders need to take some responsibility for what goes on within their own patch.
If the traders are now willing to do that, I don't see why the Council cannot give them at least a stay of execution for a couple of years. If they meet their targets, then the market can continue.

I'm afraid you've completely misinterpreted this Big Al, and I feel a bit embarrassed for you... in a friendly kind of way. ;-}
The fact that BTP figures are [bold]not included actually makes the Central Station area even worse[/bold], as there would be MORE muggings, MORE assaults, MORE thefts, MORE violence, MORE drug taking, etc. to be included, thus [bold]making Glasgow Central Station and its environs MORE likely to retain its status as the worst area for crime in the city[/bold].

From today's story:
[quote]They said they would work to reduce vandalism and fly-tipping and improve the appearance of stalls. But councillor Gordon Matheson said: "The area has the worst crime figures in the city.
"I wish the traders had put as much effort into clearing it up in recent years as they are putting into presenting themselves as victims.
"I fear this is too little too late and that this area requires an overhaul.[/quote]
If any further evidence is required to prove the [bold]stupidity and duplicity[/bold] of Glasgow City Council, then let me submit the following:
Today Matheson clearly blames the traders for not fulfilling their responsibilities for 'clearing it up', but this is yet another change of tune by a failing council.
[italic]The Herald, October 6th 2006[/italic]
[quote]Mr Mosson (councillor for Anderston) a former lord provost, [bold]criticised the market's landlord, Network Rail[/bold], claiming it had failed to carry out regular safety checks and did not contribute to the clean-up costs.
The crime figures and the clean-up costs themselves show how much of an issue Paddy's Market is for both the city council and the police. But on top of that it's a massive health and safety risk. Fire exits are blocked, there's a build-up of rubbish every day, and the place is a magnet for vermin.
"Network Rail are the landlords. They make money from this place. But have they offered a share of the everyday clean-up costs? As landlord they need to be responsible to their tenants and the public, pay their way, and ensure the place is safe."[/quote]

Paddy's market is an eyesore and a disgrace, riddled with stolen goods and bootlegs, as is much of the area around the south side of St. Enoch's Square/St Enoch's hotel. It is junkie heaven. I for one am glad this councillor has the courage to stand up for what is right.
