Glasgow's bus service is a joke compared, not just to any half-decent European city, but to Edinburgh and London. Unreliable, overpriced, poorly-managed services. No wonder people take cars everywhere.
Most bus journeys are less than an hour's walk. It's nice and dry at this time of year. Get your walking shoes on and don't give them your money. Make them grovel to win your business back.

I love it how they clearly advertised this increase!!!
The only way passengers find out is when they get on the bus and are told its gone up. Many dont have enough change and only have the correct bus fare of the previous price. People like me who use the bus everyday. Its now £3 per day for me to get into work from the east end and home again.
Shocking increase. How do they get away with not advertising it???? Should someone not be investigating this?

It is simple.
They have a monopoly and can do whatever they like. Therefore with a laissez-faire attitude, busses are filthy, fares are high and service is awful.
It is irrefutable and cannot be denied – anything else from them is sheer arrogance.

What gets me is how this company (FirstBus) has to constantly try to deceive passengers by using euphemisms such as "[bold]fare revisions[/bold]".
Maybe if the out-of-touch management at FirstBus actually treated us with some respect, then we would understand the apparent need to increase fares, but when they constantly treat us like fools then is it any wonder they get a [bold]hostile reaction from a sceptical public[/bold]?

It now costs me £60 a month to get from East Kilbride to Glasgow for work, totally scandalous, Once again the people who have to pay are the public, pretty soon we'll all just have to stay in because we can't afford bus travel or petrol, switch our heating off because we can't afford the fuel bills and starve because we can't afford to eat...but who cares,?? THANK GOD WE CAN STILL GET CHEAP BEER.....

I did see the 'fares revision' advertised. The day before they came into force. Hardly good enough.
I end up getting a four week ticket which means I only pay £1 a day, which is ok. But the service is terrible.
I live in Dennistoun and work in the west end. I cant get a direct bus that takes me all the way there, since the 41 service changed to stop at the bus station. So I have to get a bus into town, then get off, go to another bus stop, wait again, get on another bus filled with screeching spitting school weans.
I now get the bus into town, and walk the rest of the way. Its actually quicker and much less stressful.
However, it would be nice to get on the bus without feeling endangered. This morning, for example, at 8am - two neds up the back of a totally packed, standing room only bus, lounging with their feet up on empty seats, smoking hash. Nobody says anything for fear of getting stabbed. This is pretty well a daily occurrence, but if you say anything to the driver you get 'No ma problem doll' and if you email First you just get fobbed off with promises of 'investigation'.
Make the buses SAFE and maybe people will be less quick to complain when you put the fares up.

Complain all you want. But considering the fact that Brian Souter donated £500,000 to the SNP last year in advance of the election, don't expect the owners of Scotland's major public transport operators like First and Stagecoach to be given a particularly hard time by the Scottish Government about how their customers are treated. That sort of money buys a lot of favours.

First run the appaling bus service, First run the appaling train service. First don't care about the passengers on either service. Fares went up on both services on Sunday with absolutely no advertising on the trains and a lot of fares went up well above inflation. They have an unjust monopoly and maybe if people started protesting to the monpolies commission, the transport minister and thier local MSP instead of just moaning in a newspaper, something would be done about.

Why not start using a taxi...we have had 7 tariff reviews since 1999 and the flag fall price has only increased by £1 extras have stayed at 10p since 1982!!!
Since we are as cheap as a bus now, I would like to see a few more customers before we finally go out of business. Hopefully I will be in my new job by then!!!

My advice to everyone is get the train. Its much quicker and cheaper, cleaner than buses, doesn't get stuck in traffic jams and I havn't seen a junkie yet. It takes me ten minutes to travel to Glasgow City centre from the east end - giving me an extra half hour in bed in the morning since I abandoned the junkie chariots.

What a f*****g joke! Who do first think they are? Instead of providing cheap bus travel, they push the prices up again, What incentive is that for people to use public transport???. I used the osyter card when i was in london in jan and it was easy to use, maybe spt and the government should thinking about introducing this into glasgow? First couldnt run a p**s up in a brewery!!!!

A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says: "That's the ugliest baby that I've ever seen. Ugh!"
The woman goes to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her: "The driver just insulted me!"
The man says: "You go right up there and tell him off – go ahead, I'll hold your monkey for you."

The lack of notice is nothing new with First - notice up on Friday, fares up on Sunday is the norm (and the notice is always displayed downstairs so passengers upstairs don't see it!) When the Subway fares rose recently, the increase was reported in December in this newspaper, posters were on display in all stations a month before the rise, and leaflets were distributed 2 weeks in advance. Prehaps First could follow suit?
Those using the 747 service in Byres Road may like to know that this service will cease to operate via this route as of Sunday, as it is being diverted to the City Centre via Charing Cross - why it couldn't have done this via Great Western Road I do not know...
And pencil July 13th into your diaries - its the next date for First to change the timetables...

THERE IS ONLY ONE BUS THE NUMBER 36,WHEN IT DOESN'T TURN UP THAT'S YOU HAD IT,YOU ARE WAITING AT LEAST 20 MINS UNTIL THE NEXT ONE, IF IT COMES AT ALL. IF IT WAS UP TO ME I WOULD REMOVE THEIR LICENSE AS THEY ARE NOT PROVIDING THE SERVICE THAT I SUSPECT THEY SAID THEY WOULD WHEN THEY APPLIED FOR AND GOT THEIR LICENSE. I STRONGLY SUSPECT THEY ARE NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE OR WORKING TO THEIR CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATIONS. LETDOWN OF STEPPS

As much as I hate to see fares rising, this sort of reaction does not occur when shops put the price of a can of juice up from 50p to 60p. Nor did I see much in this paper when the price of an Evening Times rose to 40p (It was 32p not so long ago).
I would start walking more. It's getting into summertime, plus get some exercise at the same time.

[bold]I would just like to thank First Bus Company for making my life harder than it already was:[/bold] I live 100 yards away from the border on which the council say my child would be elligble for school bus pass - that's now £3.75 a week. We were already struggling on low income. I am taking driving lessons soon and I can't wait - no more waiting for overdue buses, no more getting caught up in fights, coughing my guts up because the driver is too scared to tell them to put their fags out, no more falling over bottles or crammed in like kippers. I may have to leave a little earlier and perhaps have to spend extra money on petrol - but at least I will not be lining the pockets of a company that [italic]expoits capitalism to its maximum potential.[/italic]

Nah - Pete, I've a better way, briefly show the driver a card which reads:[bold]"Spank Me!"[/bold] in place of your concessionary card/Zone Card.
Pretend its accidental & apologise if necessary!
Brings a smile to most drivers faces, god knows we need something to cheer up their miserable faces.
I'm just glad I don't work under the management of First if the drivers dour, sullen faces are anything to go by ? LOL ;-)
Wouldn't mind so much if the fares were increased because the level of productivity, and quality of service was so much better, ha ha!
Apart from the obvious increase in the cost of fuel, due to the price of barrels of oil rising.
Unless customers - passengers see a noticeable improvement in the service they are getting, why should they pay more ?
One last grievance relating to the eligibility to people getting Concessionary travel cards.
Previously, as far as I was led to believe, people had either to be elderly, and automatically qualified for travel cards,
OR
Disabled / or refused a drivers licence from DVLA which was the grounds for their application for a card.
NOW IT SEEMS LIKE ANY TOM, DICK, OR HARRY CAN GET A TRAVEL CARD, AND EVEN WORSE - HOLDING A DRIVERS LICENCE AT THE SAME TIME.
NO WONDER THE COST OF SUBSIDISING SO MANY PEOPLE IS SO HIGH!
The regulations, and means and ways in which people are allowed to apply for a travel card should be limited to those who are genuinely disabled, elderly, or who have a medical condition which means they are unable to hold a drivers licence.
People who have border line depression and other mental health problems, which includes millions more people should have to pay the full fare, if they get the mobility component of benefits to help them get around. Thats what their benefits are for.

I found it a bit tactless to read about the bus fare hike news article as it seemed a tad insensitive ,as was placed a notch above the article on the beautiful sweet Paisley girl who died after being knocked down by a bus .
My eyes filled with tears for her ,and she really was stunning with ,what I can only describe as the face of an angel.

At the risk of being assassinated for this comment, has anybody noticed the price of petrol/diesel these days!? Im paying about £10 more per tank than I was a couple of years ago. Can you really blame them for putting the prices up?
First are a business, in business, to make money.
Where they don't provide a great service, it's in areas where they can't make money.
Maybe some of the smaller operators in Glasgow, with ancient, non low floor buses will benefit with an increase in passengers and invest the money back into their fleets. Hmmm.....

Yes John,
You have a good point......that is if people want to put their life in the hands of some of these death traps on wheels!!!!!
Despite the fuel costs being a genuine issue - I'm sure Firsts profit margins will be merely dented, and have little impact from such price rises in oil - petrol - diesel, whatever!
Although, some smaller bus companies on the roads look seriously out of condition, with their tyres worn, their engines choking, and the drivers looking no healthier.
Perhaps people will make that switch if they save money, and boycott First at the same time, but the price will be the comfort, and safety of their journey. . . . not to mention the reliability of these alternative services.
If folk thought First were bad for time keeping, some of these smaller bus operators are even more sporadic, and unpredicatble with their timetables. . .
Their slogans should be "Your Lives Are In Our Hands!" LOL ;-)

roor06,
How right you are . . . . Just a shame all these other apathetic, ignorant fools can't kick up a stink about the current situation, boycott companies who do so little about their ethics, how they treat their staff, passing their profits on a bit more, or improving the situation & prices for their customers.
Food prices are a classic example, supermarkets overcharge, don't pass on their profits to i.e. the providers, farmers etc, some farmers go out of business, and all because of these supermarkets disgusting greed.
The only way we can solve the countries problems is by seeing a proper way of re-distribution of wealth, and a cap placed on companies profits.
How dare these executives revel in the glory of such a wealthy lifestyle, knowingly - when so many other parts of the countries public are struggling so much financially.
Sick, sick and more sick!

Five years ago a single from Alexandra Parade to the City Centre was 85p - as of this week is is £1.30. This huge rise is going straight into the pockets of First shareholders - £360million profit in fact. When are the Government going to step in and order private companies to reduce public transport costs? First are free and able to keep raising fares and they will do so again and again the future.

I remember when you could buy a wee book of 10 rip-off (literally) one-journey tickets which were cheaper than paying cash every day and which didn't have a one-week or one month expiry date. You just dropped your wee ticket in the cash machine. Cheaper, and no feeling that you haven't got the value out of your one week card. That was in the 80s right enough, but the individual tickets were about 20p.

It is now matter of time before the disappear from our streets (the way its headed anyway due to rising costs, more Privates and a static tariff) and whos partly to blame....people like you Pete....WELL DONE!!

It's taken 9 years for the demise of the trade but more so the last 3 to 4 years in my opinion.
Last night after 9 hours i earned £61...subtract £35 for weigh in and £15 diesel. Left me £11 for the wife and kids!!
If only I could be a cabbie in Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen anywhere but Glasgow.
I ran 3 women from the city centre to the crowne plaza yesterday....£5.20 please I said...."Driver, I didn't ask the time, how much did you say"....I repeated....they were SHOCKED..."are you serious driver, thats cheap...in Edinburgh your at least twice that!!!
So stop moaning Pete and be thankful that Glesga has got it CHEAP....do you want me to do free hires....is that cheap enough for you!!!
I am not kidding when I say that black cabs will be a thing of the past if operating prices keep rising.
I sold my cab and am waiting for word back about another job.....god help this city and the GCC is to blame for letting privates run riot and giving us cabbies a whopping £1 rise over 9 years......don't believe me.....read this in black & white....look at page 4 of 5 under demoted....

First should take a good look at Lothian Buses in Edinburgh- miles better than them, no wonder First stopped competing with them! They should adopt the £1.10 flat fare on local routes and also the all night service 24/7 on busy routes that was 'un-profitable' in Glasgow but fine in Edinburgh. Their weekly and monthly tickets are smart cards so people can't make their own, or alter dates, and you can pay by direct debit, so it automatically updates.
Thank goodness living out here I have a choice of bus companies. We really should copy the London system and buses and fares set and regulated.

so what the fares have gone up big deal its a hard life....buy a saver ticket single fares are only ment for one off bus users...please remember the driver did not implement these fares the company did we are just the poor bugers that have to inform you of the bad news so get off our backs or you wont be getting on the bus at all. Also i notice how this paper compares first glasgow with lothian buses in edinburgh. lothian are council run and council funds hence the cheaper fares etc. lothian are hevy subsidised where as no glasgow bus is. And if transport in other cities is so good go live there because i get the distinct feeling this is as good as it gets here so shut up n put up n give my head a rest

Something I cant understand here...sandwich and a can of juice from a supermarket = £3.00, travel anywhere in the whole city as many times you like in a day = £3.00 WHAT AM I MISSING? I dont work for First but what are ye all lookin for? Accepted, they should turn up when they say they will at least most of the time but the way diesel prices are and bus drivers stupid wage demands its only a matter of time before an already bad service gets worse. If booze or bread gets too expensive what do you do? Go elsewhere, why not do the same with buses? Because there's nowhere else to go? If there's no wee private company buses on the route its because there's no profit on the route. Thats the problem, there's not enough money to go around and too many bus companies fighting for a share of it. We're all in this together, we need to start thinking about it before opening our gobs (or laptops in this case)Somebody earlier said get the train, aye right! Have ye seen the price of a weekly train ticket? a 'cheap' day return costs over a fiver for 2 stops..get a grip will ye! If the bus companies got away with fares like that all the buses would be new!

so what the fares have gone up big deal its a hard life....buy a saver ticket single fares are only ment for one off bus users...please remember the driver did not implement these fares the company did we are just the poor bugers that have to inform you of the bad news so get off our backs or you wont be getting on the bus at all. Also i notice how this paper compares first glasgow with lothian buses in edinburgh. lothian are council run and council funds hence the cheaper fares etc. lothian are hevy subsidised where as no glasgow bus is. And if transport in other cities is so good go live there because i get the distinct feeling this is as good as it gets here so shut up n put up n give my head a rest[/quote] Lothian, are not council run any more in essence and are set up like a private company. The Lothian councils own the majority of shares, with the City of Edinburgh council having the highest stake. The councils get a dividend of £2million a year from the company (much lower than what First shareholders demand) hence the better conditions. They make around £16 million in profit, all of which goes to improving services minus the dividend. There is no subsidy as this is illegal under EU law.
A public transport service should be run as a service not as a cash cow. I don't see why the citizens of this city and surrounding districts should put up with a second rate bus service which benefits shareholders who drive around all day!

Aye, an Gibsons of Renfrew have just stuck 10pence on every fare as well! Cant say I blame them given the price rises of diesel. Is there any bus operator not putting up their fares? If not, then they must have been making too big profits in the first place to withstand increases like these. A friend tells me a double decker bus gets 6 miles per gallon!!! Thats about 6500 gallons a bus per year at roughly £5.20 a gallon? Say £33,000 of diesel per bus per year? First have about 1000 buses in Glasgow so thats a bill of about £34 million?? Sound fair enough? It is if the 6 miles per gallon is right. so, fule has gone up by 17% this year so thats an additional half a million quid a year on diesel. How can we expect them NOT to put prices up? Get a grip people! My van is taking an extra £19 to fill compared to this time last year, I've just checked my receipts, and it gets 25 miles per gallon. I've had to put my rates up but everybody expected it because of fuel, what on earth is so different about a bus? I feel for you Mr First Glasgow, high fuel bills, neds wrecking buses, drivers who dont care, customers who feel they have to use you so hate you...who the heck would go into the bus busines?!!!
