Council defends £135m waste plan

RECYCLING bosses in Glasgow today defended their £135million plans for a system they claim will make the city the greenest in Scotland.

Environmental campaigners had expressed concern over council plans for an autoclave system, first unveiled in yesterday's Evening Times.

They said the steam system that pre-treats and processes waste into organic material could cause pollution and use vast amounts of energy.

And Green MSP Patrick Harvie accused the authority of shirking its responsibility to household recycling.

He added: "Glasgow's track record on reducing waste is among the worst in Scotland, and the council cannot use this scheme as an excuse for their continued failure to back household recycling.

"These autoclave systems are no magic bullet."

But council bosses believe the massive investment is the best means of tackling the city's woeful recycling record, revealed on Tuesday as the worst in Scotland with just 17.9% of waste reused. This system, they say, will see that recycling figure rise to 80% by 2013.

A spokesman said: "I don't think anybody is trying to claim this is a panacea.

"We know any of the technologies available for residual waste involve using energy including taking lorries to landfill, but we feel autoclave is the most sensible and functional option. Glasgow faces very specific challenges in achieving its waste targets and, in autoclaving, the council now has a realistic and practical way of managing its residual waste and overcoming some of those challenges.

"The system is cleaner, safer and more efficient than standard mechanical sorting, incineration and other available technologies."

Environmental campaigners had expressed concern over council 'plans' for an autoclave system, first unveiled in yesterday's Evening Times.

The campaigners shouldn't worry about it... if it's like most of the decrepit Glasgow City Council 'plans', then they will be quickly shelved once the media eye moves on.

Remember their 'plans' to bring in Swedish-style anti-prostitution laws or the 'plans' to take over closed Glasgow post offices???

True enough.

If it wasn't about the future prosperity of our great city, then you would have to laugh at the retroactive incompetence of the decrepit New Labour controlled Glasgow City Council 'administration'. On Tuesday the ET publishes an article detailing the lengthy failings of GCC in waste management... then on Thursday we've got the "it wisnae us, it wiz a big boy and he ran away" story from people who are supposed to lead this city. Wit a bunch a nyaffs!

As I said before in response to Sydney:-
Can the E.T. not make up their minds, or are the Council giving them signals that they'll pull their advertising contract if they don't get contradictory and positive light stories.

People are not that stupid they don't forget the story run just days before of Glasgow having the worst recycling record in Scotland.

Never mind Robert Booths spin and false promises, he for me is no better than Purcell.
Afterall he was shouted down at the "Go Ape" Public Meeting on January the 23rd.

When only seven of the 550 people in the room were in favour of Go Ape's proposal.

But even after the vote, Mr Booth said he remained confident that the course would be proven to be popular.

So, this man is not to be trusted, and people will see through his empty promises.

The answer here is not in the newspaper stories quoting Robert Booth, and Land & Environmental services, it is in seeing real results on the ground, rises in recycling levels, and satisfied members of the public.

Time will tell, but my feeling is Robert Booth like so many council officials will be left red faced, and eating their words, as they try to salvage what is left of their careers ( should they be lucky enough to be voted back in.)

The day that G.C.C. actually look at, never mind consider any suggestions or ideas by us the electorate, despite the fact that we vote so many of them in, will be the day politics makes a move towards being representative, and less hypocritical / farcical than it is at present.
