ALMOST 40 years of history was gone in less than 10 seconds as a pair of landmark Glasgow flats were demolished.

The two Gorbals tower blocks were razed to the ground yesterday morning with hundreds of people gathering to watch the dramatic event.

The blocks in Stirlingfauld Place were once home to up to 2000 people in the 552 flats. They were built between 1970 and 1973 at a cost of £1.8 million but it took £1m to demolish them.

And it was a day of mixed emotions for local residents.

Caroline Carnochan, 41, grew up in the flats, living there for 27 years.

She said: "They were great flats we had good times there and I feel sad to see them go."

But Daniel McFadden, 73, who has lived in the Gorbals all his life, said: "I will be glad to see them go. They're going to renovate the area. It's a step forward."

A series of loud bangs in the area at 9.50am marked the end of the high-rise flats and the ground shook as the 23-storey blocks fell to the cheers of the crowds.

But as the clouds of dust which engulfed the area started to clear, it was time to look to the future, and the planned £350million regeneration of the site.

A total of 1600 homes are to be built, along with shops and offices.

Community facilities and a park are also promised.

The 40,000 tonnes of rubble created will be used during building work on the site.

Of which only 300 are available for rent. Why is this omitted in this story?

Don't hold your breath.

The flats were an eyesore and a magnet for violence.

Let'shope they've moved all the drunken, benefit scroungers over to sighthill. And make sure the decent folk of the Gorbals gets first choice with the new houses that wil be built.

The outline drawings are available to see I think Future Glasgow website.

The overall layout is impressive. Going by memory the park is of similar design to the green area behind the new flats at Caly Road..

Part of this massive development at the Ballater St. end is similar to Park circus opening up to the swing bridge across the Clyde at Carlton Place..

Yes impressive.

The demolition of the tower blocks with more to come is the correct action as they had outlived any usefulness.

I believe Willie Haughey (City Refrigeration)has some involvement in this massive project ? ... I can be corrected on that?

i did tell everyone sunday 10am(although they went at about 0950)what a sight it was and i did shed a wee tear,1972 untill 1991 i stayed in block 45,17 up and had a great upbrining,it was only when the the drugs menace took hold in the eighties that the flats went downhill ,they were actually well made and we had a bath and fitted kitchen(the old tenament we moved from only had an inside toilet) but i wish the good people of the gorbals all the best for the future.

I also missed it and i'm a bit annoyed to say the least. I grew up there and lived in 40 block until 87.Drove past yesterday and it was a strange sight not to see them.
There is no doubt they were an eyesore but I have many fond memories of my childhood there.
It would have been great to have caught up with some old faces at the demolition. I'll just have to wait till Norfolk Court comes down.

The pics were great, but it is sad that those buildings only lasted such a short time.

I wish all the future tenants the best!!!
