Call centre buy-out saves 800 jobs

by Brian Currie

THE closure-threatened Goldfish call centre in Cumbernauld is being taken over, saving 800 jobs.

Scottish and Southern Energy today announced it had bought the credit card call centre from its owner Barclaycard.

As well as saving most of the current workforce, the new buyer believes there is scope to expand the operation, with the possibility of another 200 jobs being created over the next couple of years.

The possibility of creating a training centre there has also been raised.

First Minister Alex Salmond, who made a surprise visit today to the Hunt Hill site, said the takeover would be a "huge relief to the workers".

He added: "This will be a significant boost to Cumbernauld and to the Scottish economy.

"Finding this new buyer is a tribute to all those involved and the best possible outcome for the workers.

"It's also a tribute to the quality of the workforce and the call centre."

Barclaycard formally announced its plans to close the call centre on May 7 - three months after buying the US-owned Goldfish credit card business for £35million.

But fears for the future of the site came in February after a announcement by Barclaycard it planned to axe the call centre.

It had decided to switch the work done in Hunt Hill to three other centres in England and workers were told they would be made redundant in August.

But today's announcement changed all that.

The new owner, Scottish and Southern Energy, is one of the largest energy companies in the UK.

It is involved in the generation, transmission, distribution and supply of electricity and gas, electrical and utility contracting and telecoms.

Talks about another possible takeover for the call centre had been going on for a few months but had been kept quiet until today's announcement was made by Mr Salmond.

He went to the call centre ahead of a Barclaycard announcement to the Stock Exchange and after staff were told.

See what can happen when a concerned, competent and knowledgeable politician steps in to deal with an economic problem; it's just a pity in Glasgow - where 700 job losses were announced last week in similar circumstances - we have to put up with New Labour non-achievers!

Great news! I was beginning to think we would be seeing some tumbleweed appearing in Glasgow!

WHAT! WHO? What on earth did Wee Eck (I presume you intend this )have to do with this? This purchase is surely what happens when a competent business is able to take a decisive action. Nothing to do with any politician. Especially one who is actively dividing the Nation--- and by that I mean Scotland!

Ah, Sydney you have revealed your hand. Just another online ultra-Nat (albeit one who only appears to read the Evening Times). So why doesn't Salmond save the Glasgow jobs too (which mostly aren't actually being lost) then? Or perhaps he didn't actually have anything to do with the saving of these Cumbernauld jobs?

Typical of the man - when a Glasgow Labour politician (more specifically, Steven Purcell) has nothing to do with a piece of bad news, he gets blamed for it.

When a non-Labour politician has nothing to do with a piece of good news, he gets credit for it.

The story can always be twisted to suit the individual agenda.

This decision has everything to do with politicians and the government. Do you really think that Scottish and Southern Energy are doing this out of good for the workforce or has it something to do with the multi million pound grant they got from the government to save these jobs. Lets not forget that there is a production factory in Irvine who have received a million pound grant to help with redundancies as they are closing and the same company is getting a multi million pound grant from the British government because they are opening a brand new factory in Northern Ireland doing exactly the same production. The taxpayer paying twice just because a company decided it could make more money if it moved across the water.

Did SSE get a grant for this, Kudos? Maybe they did but the Government would have to have reveal that (ant it's not mentioned here).

Who's getting a grant "to help with redundancies"?

Good post Scott; I was particularly impressed by your ability to spell Mr Purcell's first name correctly for the first time... keep up the good work!

Did you know that pirahna fish are actually quite placid individuals? They are known for their sharp teeth and an aggressive appetite for meat. However, despite the negative Hollywood publicity piranhas recive, they are not generally violent, and have been known to be domesticated in home and office fish tanks.

Seems a few wily piranha chaps have got the internet at home now , and live amongst us! I know all this, as my goldfish has insider information. shhh, don't tell anyone. This thread was a secret mission

Well irrespective of the agenda's of some of the above... Lets all be happy for the workforce in Cumbernauld, part of Greater Glasgow (Sydney) that they no longer face redundancy!

Typical of that politician to creep in and steel the glory of a company that worked hard to save 800 jobs. Tell him to go to Trump.

That is impressive, a goldfish bowl in Cumbernauld that 800 fish fit inside

origins

'hey maw I had a good day at the shows-i won 800 goldfish'

Nice to Meep's internal monologue spilling over onto these pages...

Or perhaps it's just his new ringtone?
