Car boss scraps plan to demolish A-list garage

PLANS by Sir Arnold Clark to bulldoze the entire A-listed Botanic Gardens Garage for a flat development have been scrapped.

New proposals for the development will retain the distinctive tiled facade of the building, built between 1906 and 1912 and considered the world's oldest multi-storey car park.

The design, which includes flats and a restaurant, will replace an earlier proposal by the millionaire car dealer which would have demolished the entire garage.

The front and rear of the building in Vinicombe Street, Hillhead, will be restored but the central section will be pulled down.

The garage was due to be replaced by a modern four-storey building incorporating a larger development of flats, cottages, retail space and a restaurant.

But the original plans were withdrawn after opposition from residents when Historic Scotland upgraded its listed status from Category B to A.

Some residents who attended last night's public presentation still had concerns about the scale of the new-build.

However, the proposals come with an understanding from Sir Arnold that his company will retain ownership of the site for letting, thereby controlling its use.

Why not make it into a car park?
The way this City Council is going
in charging residents for the audacity to own a car in the City, Arnold Clark could make a fortune with a car park. His CAR SERVICE prices may be expensive but Glasgow Council could teach him a lesson on how get large amounts of money from the motorist.
