I will be interested to see what actually transpires from this, in terms of what the package turned out to contain / be.
As we all know, the level of suspicion, and fear is so much higher now that we can easily be far more worried, or fearful than we need to be.
I just hope that this action taken was purely precautionary, and that the package turned out to be "innocent" or not what it first seemed.
It is just another sad reflection on society that we must all be so much more aware of potential threats like this. What I would be interestd to know is just how many people are genuinely far more fearful, or worried - i.e. when going to the airport or flying, or travelling on certain railway lines in London.
Even the announcements in Glasgows Underground system can evoke fear in some, and just make you aware of the risks however slim of anything actually happpening.
Naturally public health and safety must always come first, but the hype in the media, and lack of actual information given out by the police for so long afterwards just gives people time to create their own ideas, and thoughts about how bad situations can be.
It is these areas which I think outweigh the real, or genuine risks poised to the people of Glasgow.
I just hope this doesn't see a huge increase in the levels of police for security reasons, or major measures put in place. As such a reaction to this may make people feel in danger, or at risk as much as give them peace of mind.

And as for "I popped up to Marks and Spencer for a sandwich, now I am stuck here". What a chancer.

What sickens me most is the nosy onlookers, and spectators. Same when someone takes ill, collapses etc. It's as if nobody ever intervenes or offers to help, calls 999.
Maybe we could all do with some lessons in appropriacy, common sense, and decency, as if it was us on the frontline, directly affected, lying unconscious, or trapped in a fire we woudn't be to impressed at the audience would we ?

Maybe it was a package the police had lost ( in transit?) and been notified of. So to save their embarrassment they passed it off as a dangerous - suspicious object package....

shock horror salad found in bag at pizza fast food restaurant. owner said to be extremly upset he is quoted as saying "it was all green and crispy and healthy it was terrible". It is expected that the managaer will be off work for sometime suffering from stress. meanwhile 3 youths are arrested carrying a dangerous weapon locally known as a water pistol (see other story). the PM has said we will rise to this raised threat in Glasgow and detain everybody for at least 42 days. This way we can guarantee no water pistols or salads can fall into the wrong hands. Alex Salmond praised the public for showing their defiance to healthy foods and water (and a wee bit of soap) and claimed the Scots people are a beacon of hope to the entire country and things like this would never happen in a free scotland. Meep a regular at ET website blamed the hotels

What I found surprising is the amount of people who were trying to get a closer look.
I certainly wouldn't be hanging around if it was a bomb scare.
In the video, you can see an elderly woman asking the policeman 'How am a gonnae get ma bus hame noo'? Walk another 2 blocks down you idiot.

Lets either use the "report this post" option, or ignore folk like Pete, who revel in all this attention - negative or positive.
Getting back to the actual issue before Pete lowered the tone - this incident clearly hasn't bothered too many folk posting on this board / comments page too much.
Is this because of how it is reported, because it hasn't yet reached ie the BBC News website, or because folk are made of harder stuff in Glasgow to be upset, or alarmed by this incident?
All I hope is that the Police reveal what the package contained a.s.a.p. as too long before any official statement is made after the incident ( as I said before) only leads to people making their own minds up, and drawing their own conclusions.
Speculation and surmising do nothing to help matters, and journalists just thrive on peoples anxietys, uncertaintys, panic and fear.

Perhaps also, before folk needlessly lay into each other, and attack what their allowed to, or claim to be allowed to post they should read the Terms & Conditions layed down by the E.T.
i.e. By posting a comment, I confirm that I have read and agree to the terms of use.
[bold]Use of the Web Site[/bold]
3.[italic] "not to use the Site for the transmission or posting of any computer viruses or any material which is defamatory, offensive or of an obscene or menacing character, or in such a way as to cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety; "[/italic]
We shall have the right to immediately suspend your access to the Site if you commit a breach of these Terms and Conditions.
About time the E.T. got tough on the urchins who always pull down the quality of posts and go that one step too far.
Perhaps Pete should go and clean up his act - as I suspect the intent to offend is clearly far more pressing than any valid point being put accross.

Whats with all this sidetracking, and getting off the subject. We're all guilty up to a point, but when the thread of comments goes off in the opposite direction it's hardly surprising folk stop posting...
On a serious note again : Just what might this mean for Glasgow, and the city centre in future ? More installations of CCTV, more police, or public information films / adverts to warn of the dangers of spotting suspicious packages....

Haha! I had to comment on this so much, that I've registered solely to make it!
I've recently worked in this store (ok, so I'm a Pizza Hut minion...), and I'm gutted I wasn't in the city centre today to laugh my **** off at this fiasco!
Have to admit though, it's a franchise store, so wouldn't be too high on the "hit" list unless the fiend didn't bother to research the joint first. There are some good people working in the kitchen though, so I wouldn't have liked to see anything happen to them (the kitchens in the basement, so they'd be the most vulnerable).
But hey, like most restaurants, customers aren't allowed to consume food from elsewhere, so maybe it was a tree-huggin' health freak who just came in for a coffee :-D

Aye - nice one The Wise One, however un-intentional, does slightly take away from the alias name chosen for yourself - LOL ;-)
Former employee then, can't say this is that hilarious though. Maybe the media hype more than the actual incident itself blows the story up - (no pun intended.)
As for I_Dream_of_Electric_ Sheep, nice alias name - any particular reasoning for it ?
Fully agree about the need for police on the beat, on the ground whether high visability or not. They need to be there to prevent crime, not just respond to feedback from a CCTV control room...... these minutes to give them the info, and the time it takes them to get to the scene of crime all add to the risk of someone potentially being mudered or killed, whether accidentally, or intentially.
Would however like to see the giant streetwise screens on lampposts in strategic places - for advertising used to give better public safety advice generally - not just advertising of fast food restaurant chains.

People [bold]should not be eating pizza[/bold] , it is a fundamental problem in society that too many [bold]cheese laden foodstuff consumptions[/bold] make one obese in lunch hours. I blame the parents, and also the nation especially the councils. And the weather. Pizza places need to check BMI on all clients before allowing them to feast .Thank the Lord that there was no bomb , just much cheese, onion rings, and fizzy pop. Lower The BMI I say! Hear hear.

Pete, Peoplepower, the 'hundreds gathered to watch'...it was more a case of people who had been walking down Sauchiehall Street at the time and were stopped by the police, milling about wondering what the hell was going on, and what to do. They didn't hang around too long.
And as for the person who went to M&S for their lunch and got stuck, not a chancer at all Pete, what a daft thing to say. I work in a shop right in the centre of it all, and 2 of my colleagues were out getting food and were nor able to get back in, and they had to mill about in town til it was all over, they phoned the shop to find out what was going on and were told in no uncertain terms NOT to go home, but hang around and wait.
I'm fairly certain it was all a false alarm, but it was good to see the police turn up swiftly and take charge of the situation.
