Intercity rail link to be 'world class'

RAIL bosses want to make the busy Glasgow to Edinburgh train line one of the best in the world.

Network Rail hope the route will have "world-class" punctuality and reliability, similar to lines anywhere in the globe.

More than seven out of 10 trains currently arrive on time and more than nine in 10 are within five minutes of schedule.

But targets will be set to further improve timekeeping, which bosses say is already at its best for decade.

Measures being considered include raising the speed limits on sections of the line which would help reduce the current 48-minute journey time and boost the economy by £60million for every minute saved.

And an extra £5million has been added to the £20m annual spend on the line.

Non-stop trains would be introduced and the speed limit raised from 90mph to 100mph as part of the proposals.

The way to get real benefits on this route is to electrify it. £5m in railway terms is chicken feed money.......as usual the proverbial sticking plaster instead of a major revamp.

RA, it will be electrified in the next few years. Fastest journey times should fall to to 37 minutes, apparently.

But perhaps only in the UK do we consider an aspiration to have trains running on time as "world class"!

After Glasgow Airport train link and crossrail opens will this world class service run straight from Edinburgh to Glasgow airport!

If its not broke dont fix it. Dont tinker with a service thats perfectly good as it is. Me thinks there are people in the First Scotrail offices who have nothing to do me thinks. Hows this for an idea. What about reopening train stations that were closed over the last forty years especially down towards Ayr , Kilmarnock, Ayrshire?

Meep, this isn't about FirstScotrail.
Jim, Crossrail isn't opening anytime soon...

I believe that the franchise for the Glasgow to Edinburgh service is owned and operated by First Scotrail. They undercut National Express for the bid.

What proverb is that then?

Just *where* do they get these ridiculous figures from??

Again, an opportunity was lost when the 1950s plan to build a Glasgow North station by essentially amalgamating QS High Level and Buchanan Street Stations on the site of the latter came to nothing.

Will world class cost the same as 1st class .. prices are already too high on the Glasgow/Edinburgh route ..

Economic gain figures are largely based on the time savings accruing from faster services. If you have a lot of business travellers each saving a minute per trip, that adds up.

Whether it really adds up to to £60m per minute, I don't know but you need some way of estimating it.

100mph is snail speed! Forty eight minutes travelling time is a jest. Surely during pea hours the MMPH could be set to 120-30mph. If this ment having spotters on the track (cctv) to ensure further safety - remove any ned hazard, then surely worth a spend?

A train going at 120mph will easily remove a ned hazard!

We need a point to point brand new electric line across the shortest straight line distance between the cities for very high speed travel. Trains should have four stops. depart Glasgow Airport calling at Glasgow, Edinburgh Airport and then Edinburgh.....! Take us to the 21st Century please.....!

PS..... the trouble with calling this improved service "World Class" is that as soon as you travel around the "World" you soon realise that we're living in a bygone era of rail transport and are strictly "Second Class"

Ive mentioned it before on a previous post and say it again... if we are to finaly drag this country into the 21st century, kicking and screaming, then drastic change is needed, not 'improvement'! Get the Maglev line installed, like Blue Shield says; Glasgow Airport-Glasgow City-Edinburgh Airport-Edinburgh City! At its top speed of 430km/h the journey times would be reduced to 10 minutes! Want proof;

A short video inside a Maglev showing its speed! This is the Shanghai Airport Maglev and China is considdering Maglev for all of it's inter-city travel. No dissrespect, but if a 'developing' country like China can spend the money for this kind of transport investment... why cant we!? Oh, sorry... Iraq! Guess 37 mins to Edinburgh will just have to do! Thanks Tony!

My sentiments exactly - look at a map - the North Clyde Line to Airdrie, and then onto Bathgate is actually the shortest and straightest route. Parts of it between Q.S and Easterhouse via Bellgrove were originally quadruple-tracked - you can still see the trackbed and the extra disused bridges. Easy therefore to put a parallel high-speed line in.
