5000-strong Go Ape protest taken to MSPs

by Brian Currie

CAMPAIGNERS against the Go Ape adventure course in Glasgow's Pollok Park handed in a 5000-strong petition to the Scottish Parliament.

It was accepted by Deputy First Minister and Govan MSP Nicola Sturgeon who said she'd bring it to the attention of Cabinet colleagues.

Ms Sturgeon, who has spoken out against proposals for the aerial assault course, said the plans had "to be looked at afresh".

She added: "This petition shows how much local people care about Pollok Park."

The Save Pollok Park campaigners were also backed by other Glasgow MSPs including Patrick Harvie, of the Greens, LibDem Robert Brown and Tory Bill Aitken.

Save Pollok Park spokesman Bill Fraser said: "The city council didn't do its homework.

"There was no proper environmental study done. We think the whole thing was inept and sloppy."

The planning application was referred to ministers who have until July 9 to decide whether or not to call it in - effectively a re-run of the planning application.

A council spokeswoman said the application "complied with statutory requirements".

No names, no decisions mentioned...? Who are these architects? They're offering bungs? And did Niall Walker only decide to mention this once he'd lost his Council ward?

Whatever happened to the news items on the Save Pollok Park website about the recent archaeological work threatening the Go Ape course?

Posted by: mulross, Glasgow on 11:33am Thu 26 Jun 08
I don't know the truth or otherside of Niall Walker's claims. However, having been present at the planning committee meeting when Go Ape was approved, I have to say it was a complete farce.

Whether true or not, it's no wonder that ordinary folk believe that there is corruption in the City Chhambers.

It pains me to agree with Sydney, he normally rants a fair bit, but he is 100% right on!

1. NO environmental impact assessment done.
2. NO assessment of car parking load.
3. NO consultation with the Maxwell family.
4. NO consultation with the people of Glasgow.
5. NO WAY THIS SHOULD GO AHEAD!!!

That's the trouble with Sydney, Seymour... he's like the boy who cried wolf.

Go to The Scotsman link above mulross and you'll see how Walker alleges that he was threatened by a fellow councillor who had criminal convictions for housebreaking, shoplifting and assault... oh, and that councillor was also a former Lord Provost..

I read the article Sydney and if it is true that that Mosson was jailed in the 1960's then Walker has certainly gone down in my estimation (not that I was ever that fond of him in the first place) by raking that up unless he is prepared to provide evidence that Mosson's past is relevant to his behaviour in the Council.

How many "youths and families" do you know personally that will be able to afford using Go Ape?

If you actually do know these people (which I doubt) then you are obviously moving in different circles from the majority of Glaswegians

As a employee of G.C.C and With My Father a Clr of G.C.C I Can tell you that Niall Walker's claims are True, corruption is big and is in every dept and through my work I have learn and witness it
I ask the Chief Executive to look into it but Nothing as he sings on the same hymn sheet as the council, (Cover up and all is good in the councils backyard)
The Go Ape Project was going ahead even if the public or people of Glasgow like it or not,
It makes money for the council and That’s all the Rats in city hall care about.
(As Sydney says)
1. NO environmental impact assessment done.
2. NO assessment of car parking load.
3. NO consultation with the Maxwell family.
4. NO consultation with the people of Glasgow.
5. NO WAY THIS SHOULD GO AHEAD!!!

As for the site of Go Ape the council had 2 very good sites that this type of thing could be build
But when it was know The money would not be as good and south Lanarkshire could take some of the cash, The G.C.C Mafia Pants full up and they went for Pollok park.
Glasgow is called ‘Dear green place’’ ...
Its ‘’Dear green and Lovely green pounds notes’’ right into the Council fat cats fund.
Would love to go to a thing like this ..NOT IN A PUBLIC PARK Or A Park that has history that go’s back 300 years or is used by some many people.

the deal is probably done and the brown envelopes are handed over, then in a couple of years the builders will be building on that same area, so in actuall fact the park that was gifted to the people of glasgow will now be the property of .....guess who?who will try a guess? but you all must agree its a cunning stunt done by our sleekit councillors.....nutt
ers or not, everybody is entitled to be heard.....it is very strange that the story of childrens bus cut backs and also school dinners cut back, and lollipop guards cut backs,.... not too many had a word to say, the priorities are all wrong, we need go ape like we need a hole in the head!as the bard would write.....a mans ambition is but wee when all he wants is to swing from a great big tree.!

If Go Ape goes ahead with the plans to Pollok Park, will security be there in force to protect the dig? I hope it isn't damaged.
