Having looked at all the facts, I'm very much up for having a Tesco and flats built there! It's derelict land needing used up and having a supermarket there is a great idea! I fail to see what all the fuss is about! I would defiantly visit the area and possible some of the small independent shops if a large Tesco was built there but as it stands I never shop in any of the shops on byres road and probably would continue not to if the land was "mixed use"

It's the [bold]scale[/bold] of what's proposed. But Tesco only seem to build very large and very small stores now, and if it has a negative effect on the surrounding area (congestion, pollution, etc), well tough!

Flats which will house people who will need somewhere to shop and who will not all shop at Tesco but who would probably shop in the local shops.
Think they have shot themselves in the foot with this one.

QuincyMD, you are making no sense... who has shot themselves in the foot?
There is nothing to say that there won't be a supermarket adjacent to the site that's being sold. And there may well end up being flats on that site anyway: what will Glasgow Harbour want to do with it?

But it now looks likely the firm will be forced to ditch its plans for the flats because a huge chunk of land it needs for access to the plot is to be sold to another bidder.
Who is the other bidder?? Sainsburys/Somerfiel
d/Lidl ??????

seems to me the only difference is that the flats will be built by a different developer. So no real difference. Could this suit tesco more in the current housing climate?
There is no need for another supermarket within the westend and most of teh residents are against the move by Tesco not just a vocal minority
the fastest and most efficient way to killa thriving high st is to build a massive superstore. the westend likes its high st and does not want this development. Tesco will be building a massive store in maryhill. I think one store is enough

Someone mentioned as 'thriving high street' in the west end? Where's that then? All I can think of is Dumbarton Road and Byres Road, which as far as I see are pretty much just charity shops, pubs, farmfoods and estate agents. Cannae think of a decent existing supermarket either.

It does seem that there will always be a group of people against progress of any kind. Glasgow get to host the 2014 games, therefore bringing in amazing amount of visitors and revenue to the city whilst creating jobs and upgrading poor areas - people find something to moan and protest about; Pollock Park grants permission for Go-Ape something intended to be fun and attract people to embrace the outdoors, visit the park, be healthy and exercise - more protesting; Tesco want to build a supermarket on derelict ground, regenerating the area, giving locals more choice, bringing jobs to the area - people are offended byt his and protest.
I mean come on guys......if you people didn't have something to moan and protest about then quite simply you would be bored. And that's the honest truth of the matter, you know and I know it. Dress it up around as many moral, sociological, enviromental and political arguments as you want.....we all know it's just another excuse to get excited about something and attempt to convince yourself that you have done something interesting today. Get a hobby and stop writing into Points Of View - nobody cares!!!!

As for conformist drones - in this day and age, those are the protesters. Every neighbourhood has its loudmouth do-gooder who will bully people into signing petitions - most people just "conform" to shut them up.

My how this wee debacle has grown wings
Essentially this site is full of doomsayers and malingerers (note toself use this word more) who will see muck in gold and whilst claiming to be the true weegies want us to return to the days of black buildings no jobs and a derelict city scape. They feel threatened by progress and change. Now I like to think fo myself as pro the changes I see alaround me in Glasgow which is much better place to live and work than it ever was. I don't wear rose tinted specs on Glasgow I had them punched off me by lunatics in the 1980s and couldn't wait to escape the midden that was Glasgow. However times move on and cities change. Glasgow is an excellent example of a post industrial city finding a new direction when the heavy industry has left for whatever reason. It is now vibrant, dynamic and outward looking but alas there are those here who will try to **** on any good news for fear that they maya ctually have to crack a smile and see change as being positive
Aye there are still problems in Glasgow, name a city that doesn't but there is now a more much affluent city which is not a bad place to be.
Now away and play tig wae the buses

Plus, Tesco are opening one of the Metros in Partick - think it's opposite Hyndland Street.
Problem solved :-))

Why is it that the people who oppose the Tesco's being built are so full of personal abuse for those who disagree with them? The agression being shown here is shocking. It's like a bunch of drunken football fans who've lost and are looking for someone to beat up.
I agree with whoever says the parents are to blame.

Has anyone else ever eaten Value Chicken Kiev [italic]as per my description above[/italic] ? If so, could you let me know if you also had to walk swiftly with a frown , purple face, pursed lips, and your buttocks tightly clenched for fear it isnt 'just a fart'? within 20mins of masticulation of said offending foodstuff?
Just wondered, oh and reminds me '10 Value Fishfingers ' ingredients include minced up Cods Eyeballs etc.

Particularly when bunches of wifeys decide to stop with their trolleys and have a natter in the middle of the narrow aisles.
Morrisons also needs to drag itself into the 21st century, or into the 1990s at least.

So, let’s get this right. A major-multinational company wants to invest their own money (not public money) in building and regenerating a sh1tty part of town at no cost to the council tax payer. And what happens? A multitude of “no thank you” types object. I think that Glasgow has to realise that just because you have a superior attitude and some fine architecture (plenty of crap weather and plenty of crime) and a lot of “well we’re Glasgow and we’re due sumthing” (sic) does not mean that the city is entitled to anything. I’m half hoping that Tesco says “to hell with Scotland”. Then watch all the bleedin hearts say job losses here, there and everywhere – oh what to do???

Morrisons put in a planning application two weeks ago to replace its current supermarket in Partick with a much bigger one on the same site and integrating this with the local train and subway stations.

I have a shop. and we are not selling so many tins of beans now :) with these big fancy shops opening . corner shops are vanishing, turning into swanky coffeee houses. I used to be the only guy who stayed open till late now every one is copying my methods. Tesco can't make up their own ideas. no fair .

give the west enders something to be proud of and unique.
turn the whole area into a jumbo size ice stadium (skating rink) then save all the polar bears affected by climate change in the arctic, with a bit of luck when the beasts kick the bucket we can recycle them by sticking the heads on library walls we could have a go at home grown fur coats, handbags and slippers to sell to the eskimos

tesco should go ahead with the idea of opening up a super store, with a 'little village ' setting....masonette
s all around on top of the tesco store which could have different buisinesses on the ground floor like hairdressers, barber shop, post office, pub, coffee shop, cinema, video and games outlet, newspaper and magazine shop...anything like that so as not to interfere with the grocery shopping, i saw that idea in a magazine and i liked the concept, handy for the residents too especially for people who need everything at hand ,....no need for bus fare or cars, excellent.(it would need to be designed in a circle or an oval for vistors parking).
