Well, hello Dolly

by Maureen Ellis

DYNAMITE comes in small packages - and gigs don't get much more explosive than a double blast of Dolly Parton.

Tennessee's blonde bombshell powered through a second night of classics for a sold out SECC crowd.

Living up to her reputation for being little but oh-so loud, the 62-year-old grand dame of country music led a 120-minute journey through her 50-year career.

It was classic, over-the-top Dolly: the rhinestone-tastic white costumes, the larger-than-life personality and those bionic bosoms.

Opening with Two Doors Down, she provided an early treat with Jolene, acknowledging the effort some male audience members had made by changing the lyrics to Drag Queen'.

Touring to support latest album Backwards Barbie, Parton proved quite the raconteur giving an insight into her impoverished background.

Growing up as one of 12 kids - the offspring of randy, horny hillbillies' - she gave heartfelt introductions to the album's title track and Coat Of Many Colors.

Those soaring vocals that have won a clutch of Grammy Awards were best showcased on The Grass Is Blue, Little Sparrow and Only Dreamin'.

Parton is a jack of all musical trades, demonstrating her skills on a glittering baby grand, a selection of guitars, plus banjo, harmonica and tin whistle, giving those plectrum-proportioned scarlet talons a work-out on White Limousine and a cover of Fine Young Cannibals' She Drives Me Crazy.

Here You Come Again, Islands In The Stream and 9 To 5 in quick succession had everyone on their feet.

The generous smattering of pink stetsons might just make it onto the tour DVD being filmed last night in Hall 4.

Dolly paid tribute to the crowd - she told them I can't wait to see you again. You've made me feel very loved tonight' - before finishing with I Will Always Love You and Jesus And Gravity.
